Mr. E. A. Beard Died Here Tuesday

Mr. E. A. Beard, a highly esteemed Jackson County resident for more than half a century, passed away at his home in Edna Tuesday evening, June 17th, following a long and painful illness. Nothing had been left undone to restore him to good health, but from the beginning of his illness his condition gradually grew worse, and for the past several months he was desperately ill. Death came to relieve this good many of many months of suffering.

The funeral service was held at the Allen Memorial Presbyterian Church in Edna Wednesday afternoon at 5:30 o’clock. Rev. John H. Newton, pastor of the church, conducted the service. Interment was made in the Edna Cemetery.

The active pallbearers were Messrs. Carol Crenshaw, Alvin Dincans, Wallace Simons, Claudius Branch, Leon Gwosdz and Ben Dincans.

Honorary pall bearers were Messrs. Gideon Egg, Mae Hutcheson, M. D. Pumphrey, Oscar Daniel, Cicero Daniel, Robert L. Daniel, Edgar Thompson, Henry Farrar, J. R. Claybrook, H. O. Taylor and John Atkinson.

Emerson Alfred Beard, the son of Milton Alford and Martha Grey Beard, was born December 20, 1860, near Nashville, Tenn. He moved to Texas with his parents when he was a youth. He was reared at Waxahachie, Texas, and when he came to Jackson County 55 years ago he moved from that place. While a resident of Ellis County he united with the Methodist Church. Mr. Beard owned a farm several miles west of Edna near the Arenosa settlement, but a number of years ago he retired and moved with his wife to Edna. He was united in marriage January 3, 1900, to Miss Nora Clyde King, a member of a pioneer and prominent South Texas family. Mr. Beard was a man esteemed and honored by everyone of his acquaintances, for he stood for the best things in life and high principles in his own living. The fact that he was loved and respected more by his immediate neighbors and close friends is mute testimony of his high character. Those who knew him best loved him most. That was the kind of man Emerson Beard was, and his passing has brought genuine sadness to many hearts. He was the last member of his immediate family except a half brother, Mr. Sterling P. Beard of Arlington, Texas.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nora C. Beard of this city and one daughter, Mrs. Nannabelle Thompson of Edna, and three sons, Messrs. Henry Beard of Freer, Roland Beard of Victoria, and Cecil Beard of Los Angeles, Calif., and six grandchildren.

To the bereaved ones the Herald extends sympathy.

To Daddy – Mr. A. B. Billingsy

Oh, Daddy how we loved you,
But we know that you are safe
In the arms of Jesus
Up in that Blessed Place.

But, oh, how we will miss you
And yearn for you each day,
For we were so happy here,
With you to lead the way.

And when we are lonely,
We will always think of you,
For you were the best
That we ever knew.

And, daddy, as the days roll by
We won’t forget you never,
For we all have our memories
Of the sweetest daddy ever.

Your daughter—Alta.
