James Stewart Bailey

September 2, 1965 - July 5, 2023

James “Jimmy” Stewart Bailey, 57, of Edna, Texas, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on July 5, 2023.

Jimmy was born on September 2, 1965, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Murray Bailey and Maria Aleman Bailey. He grew up in Victoria, Texas, and graduated from Victoria High School, where he was the varsity pitcher for three years. Throughout his life, Jimmy loved to watch and play baseball. His love of the sport persisted after high school and he continued by playing softball in a rec league with his co-workers and friends at Halliburton; where he worked as a supervisor in multiple fields for over 25 years.

In January 1991, Jimmy married the love of his life, Alicia Padon Bailey. They settled down in Edna and raised two children, a daughter, Brittany, and a son, Dalton.  Jimmy and Alicia enjoyed spending time on the family’s land in Cordele where they looked after their cattle. Despite his tough outer shell, Jimmy was a softie and he could often be found bottle feeding one of the many calves Alicia brought home over the years; feeding the stray cat he called “D.C.” (short for Damn Cat) that just showed up in the barn one day; or sneaking apples and carrots to the horses.

There was no doubt the country life was perfect for Jimmy and he simply loved being outdoors. Jimmy was an avid hunter and fisherman. When he was not at work, he was usually in Cordele building or repairing fences, riding the 4-wheeler to check on cattle, hunting hogs or shredding/clearing land. He could operate almost any construction equipment ever made, and he may have “borrowed” heavy equipment left on the property by contractors, to complete a project a time or two. However, one of his happiest places was on a lawnmower or tractor mowing grass, weeds, brush and an occasional branch or two of one of Alicia’s prized crape myrtles.

He was someone that could do any job you put in front of him without hesitation. It was that can-do attitude and determination, mixed with a whole lot of stubbornness, that meant he was always on the go and ready to meet the challenge, whatever it might have been. His last challenge was fighting malignant brain cancer and he treated that battle the same as others; fighting long and hard, amazing his doctors with his continued strength, and beating the odds by surviving more than twice as long as most others with the same diagnosis.

Jimmy was a lot of different things to a lot of different people, but most of all he was a hardworking, brutally honest, entertaining, sometimes overprotective, but always loving husband, father, brother, son, uncle and friend.  He will be cherished forever in our hearts and memories.

Jimmy is survived by his loving wife, Alicia; their children, Brittany and Dalton, all of Edna, Texas; his siblings, Tina (Chris) Schultz, of Pflugerville, Texas, and Sheila (Raymond) Martinez and Jeff Bailey, all of Victoria, Texas; his in-laws, Lamar and Billie Padon of Edna, Texas, and his nine nieces and nephews who adored him and all of his fun antics.

He is preceded in death by his father, Murray Bailey and his mother, Maria Bailey.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel in Edna, Texas.  Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:30 PM; followed by a Celebration of Life from 3:30 to 4:00 PM, where family and friends are invited to share happy memories and celebrate Jimmy’s life in the way he would want to be remembered.  Flowers may be sent to Oakland Funeral Home.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Oakland Funeral Home in Edna, TX, 361-782-2221, www.oaklawnfhednatx.com.

Dr. Joseph White Bitter, age 83, long-time veterinarian and civic leader, died October 21, 2022, at his home in Edna, Texas.  He was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Joella White and John Albert Bitter, Jr.  He graduated from Central Catholic High School in San Antonio in 1957 and Texas A&M University with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1964.  Upon graduation, he served in the United States Air Force and started his career as a veterinarian in Pearsall, Texas, before opening a veterinary practice in Edna, Texas, in 1967.  He was an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, as well as the Texas Veterinary Medical Association, for which he was Past Director and received the President's Award in 1986.  He also served as Past Director of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and was an active member of both the American Association of Equine Practitioners and Beefmaster Breeders United.  In 1984, Dr. Bitter received the Jackson County Top Producer Award for Beef Cattle.  He was also Past Director of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture.

Deeply involved with the youth in his community, Dr. Bitter served as Past President and member of the Edna ISD Board of Trustees for 16 years, and was a Founding Member and Past President of the Mid-Coast Association for Gifted and Talented.  For his leadership in Jackson County 4-H, he received the Outstanding Leader Award (1983) and was named Upper Coast Distinguished Leader (1984). He was a member of the Jackson County Youth Builders.  He was also an extra-ordinary minister of Holy Communion and a CCD teacher at St. Agnes Catholic Church for over 25 years.

Dr. Bitter married the former Mary Ann Weiss in 1964 and loved telling the story of asking for her hand in marriage.  He was a true family man - a beloved son, brother, husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather.  We loved his willingness to roll up his sleeves and help others, his fighting Texas Aggie spirit, his giant bear hugs, his love of God and Country, his genuine generosity, his loud whistle and rough housing, his teasing nature, his love of storytelling, his appreciation for good food, his love of the outdoors (especially his beloved Hill Country Ranch), his favorite pastime raising Beefmaster cattle, and his dedication to family and friends.

Dr. Bitter is survived by Mary Ann, his wife of 58 years, his children and their spouses: Russell Bitter, Janet and Dr. Donald Collins, Michael and Liliana Bitter, Barbara and Vince Terracina, Dr. John and Monicka Bitter, Carol Bitter and Yanis Papagiannis, Patrick and Paige Bitter, Sarah Bitter, Stephen and Rebecca Bitter, Smyth and Tony Johansson, Catherine Bitter, Mary Ann Bitter and Matt Hobbs, and Dr. Joella Bitter and Dr. John Doughton. He was affectionately called Papa Joe by his grandchildren: Charles, Emily, Claire, Michael, Peter, Joella, Christopher, Liliana Marie, Jonathan, Thomas, Cecilia, Grace, Nicholas, Camille, Jacob, Lucas, Travis, Danae, Amidas, Chloe, Samuel, Alex, Austin, Marilyn, Cora, Joseph, Anna, Eve, Nora, Theo, Leo and Isaac.  He is also survived by his sister and her husband, Priscilla and John Lupe, his brother and his wife, James L. and Terri Bitter, his sister-in-law, Kay Bitter, his brother-in-law and his wife, Ted and Ann Weiss, his nieces and nephews: Tracy Bitter Pressly, Amy Bitter Scheiber, Joella Lupe Mach, William Lupe, James Bitter Steves, and David, Elizabeth, John and James Weiss, and many wonderful life-long friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John Albert Bitter, III, and his granddaughter, Sofia Alicia Bitter.

Visitation will be Monday, October 24, 2022, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with Rosary being recited at 6:00 pm, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna, Texas.  Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 10:30 am at St. Agnes Catholic Church to be followed by a private burial on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas.

Pallbearers are Russell Bitter, Michael Bitter, John Bitter, Patrick Bitter, Stephen Bitter, Donald Collins and Vince Terracina.

Virginia Lee Bland Brod

June 25, 1930 - August 27, 2022

Virginia Lee Bland Brod, age 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, August 27, 2022.  Virginia was born on June 25, 1930, in Franklin, Texas to Hubert Lee and Dovie Lee (Maxwell) Smith.  When Virginia’s parents took her home from the hospital, they called her Baby Smith.  She didn’t get her name Virginia until it was time for her to start school and her birth certificate had to be corrected as there was no first name.  She remained “Baby” to her parents for their entire lives.

Mom met her first husband, Jarva Raymond (J. R.) Bland, in Texarkana, Arkansas where she was attending college.  J.R. was sitting in an ice cream soda shop when he saw her walking down the street and told his buddies he was going to marry her.  She agreed to go to the movies with him but she slept through the whole movie, so it really took a second date to get those two together!  During their 40 years of marriage, they were blessed with four children, Rose Marie Robin (Chris), Bubba Bland (Sandy), Sharon Ambrosia and Joe B. Bland (Marsha).  J.R. passed away in May 1990.

Mom jokingly told us she would never have another man in her life, but several years later, we found she and her mischievous friends were sneaking off to some senior dances and it didn’t take too long before she told us someone had caught her eye.  She said he could really dance and followed her around like a puppy – what more could you ask for!  Shortly afterward, we were introduced to Leander (Andy) Brod.  Andy and Virginia were married for 22 years, until his death in May 2015.  When mom and Andy married, we were blessed to add Andy’s daughter, Janet Brod Ready (Vance) to our family.

During Virginia’s life, she was an avid tennis player, winning a state championship while in college.  She loved camping, fishing, hunting, dancing and travel.  She worked as a secretary at Mercer Construction Company in Edna, loved attending First Baptist Church in Edna and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW 8556 in Lolita. Granny, as she was lovingly known by all of her grandchildren, will long be remembered for passing on one of her favorite family recipes for Chocolate Gravy and Biscuits (don’t knock it till you tried it)!  Recently, mom has been telling us when she turns 100, she was going to get an orange motorcycle and that we should consider putting one on layaway for her.   She wanted us to know she would be driving the motorcycle and the rest of us could sit in the sidecar.  She has shared stories of smoking in the second grade, driving and wrecking a car at the age of 9 and moving out of her home at the age of 16.  As you can tell, she had a great sense of humor, wit and spunk, so anytime her children or grandchildren get out of line, we blame it on Granny!

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother Jessie Smith and both of her husbands.  In addition to her four children and stepdaughter, Virginia is survived by two brothers, Alan and Stephen (Rhonda) Smith, one sister, Ava Smith Ballard (Junior), 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.

We would like to thank some special people in our mother’s life.  Friends and neighbors, Lola Spree, Ludene Darilek, Jesse Coker Gerjes and David and Theresa Hill have been by mom’s side for many years.  Everyone should be blessed with a granddaughter like Stacy Richards and her husband Dan.  It is difficult to express the level of appreciation for the love, joy, support and compassion Stacy and Dan have extended to our mother. They could always make mom smile and have spoiled her way too much!  Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. William Shay and his amazing staff for providing the best medical care available in Victoria.  We also want to thank the staff of Sodalis of Victoria for making mom so comfortable while making her new home in their facility.  We also express a special thank you to Hospice of South Texas for the compassion extended to mom during her last days.

Viewing will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.at Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna, Texas. There will be a private family burial service and celebration of life at Red Bluff Cemetery in Lolita, Texas.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Shannon Venglar, Tim Bland, James Simek and Chase Skinkis, as well as Dan Richards and Chris Robin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of South Texas, 605 E. Locust Ave., Victoria, TX 77901, or First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 417, Edna, TX 77957.

Arrangements are under the direction of Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna. 361-782-2221.

Charles Nelson Brown

Charles Nelson Brown was born March 2, 1873 and passed away at his home at Palacios, Texas, on the evening of June 14, 1936. He spent most of his boyhood around Taylor, Texas. For several years he lived in North Texas and moved with his parents to Jackson County, Texas, in 1894 where he lived continuously until he moved to Palacios in 1935, except for two years spent at Beeville.

Mr. Brown was united in marriage to Miss Martha Rogers of Jackson County on November 11, 1912. To this happy union there were born four children.

He became a member of the Louise Baptist Church thirty-five years ago. He was ordained a deacon by the Ganado Baptist Church in 1924. He was superintendent of the Ganado Sunday School for several years. Soon after moving to Palacios he became a member and a deacon in the First Baptist Church here.

Mr. Brown’s home and place of service for many years was in the Whitehall community, between Ganado and Louise, here he was active in a community Sunday School and prayer meeting. He was a farmer and stock raiser. For a number of years he practiced veterinary in Jackson County. He was always an asset to the community in which he lived, waiting upon the sick and doing many things of kindness to those who were in need.

Mr. Brown was a Royal Arch Mason, a member of the Beeville Chapter No. 191.

Since making Palacios his home, he had been unable to do any work and has spent much of his time at the sport he loved so well, fishing. In this recreation he has made many friends who shall greatly mourn his going.

The homelife of the Brown family has been an inspiring one. The devotion of the members of the family, one for the other, their simplicity and sincerity of living, in a hurried age, will lend stability and character to the children through the years to come.

There survive his wife, Mrs. C. N. Brown, one daughter, Dixie, three sons, Frank , Leo and Travis; one brother, M. W. Brown of Palacios; five sisters, Mrs. John Hillyard, Deutschburg; Mrs. Ola Williams, Galveston; Mrs. A. C. Casper and Mrs. J. W. Ross both of Ganado, and Mrs. A. H. Weynandt, Louise.

April 24, 1953 – July 10, 2023

Leslie Jimmie Brown, affectionately known as Les, passed away on July 10, 2023 in Port Lavaca, TX at the age of 70. He was born on April 24, 1953 in Ganado TX to Oscar Homer and Catherine Lenz Brown.

Les was intensely devoted to his family, which was not difficult for him. He was known to be one of the luckiest guys around, especially being married to his one and only, Verna Kay Wright Brown. He proudly celebrated a mind-blowing 50 years of marriage with her in September of 2022. Even down to his last days of his life, you knew his love for her did not grow dim. They endured much together. Their strong bond surely has inspired all who have met them.

For decades, Les spent his professional career in the oilfield scene. Starting from the bottom (where the oil is!), he skillfully climbed the ladder and retired as foreman, making the West Ranch in Vanderbilt his stomping ground. Les had a knack for reeling in good times. In his younger years, you could find him racing cars and dancing. As the years went by, you could find him cruising along the coast or casting his line for the big catch. His wonderful personality kept friends and family hooked. While growing up, Dad was always one to look up to for advice and encouragement. This could have been strict or lenient, but we listened to it. Sometimes it may not have stuck but his discipline helped us be who we are today. As his son and daughter, we were blessed to have Les as our father. Dad worked tirelessly to raise us with the help from Mom. We are so thankful to have had Dad in our lives to have given us a loving home.

Along with being a good husband and a good father, Les took on the beautiful role of being our Pop. Each of his grandchildren have a memory of their own to proclaim him “grandfather of the lifetime”. He had watched the older ones grow into the fine young adults that they are today and had enjoyed spending time with the younger ones at sporting events and the fair.

Les is survived by his wife, Verna Kay; children, Jennifer Brown-Herrera and Keith Brown; grandchildren, Jacqueline Herrera, Justine (Jesse) Gauff, Joshua (Shelby) Herrera, Nicole Brown, Brice Brown and Blake Brown; and great-grandson, Cooper Herrera. He is also survived by his siblings, Dianna (Charlie) Michalik, Doris (Albert) Malaer, Homer (Cheryl) Brown and Gloria (Ronnie) Benner; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Brown and Kathy Brown; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Les is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy Brown; brothers, Ralph and Kenneth Brown; as well as his in-laws, Vernon and Alice Wright.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 15, 2023 from 6-8PM at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 3PM at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home, with interment following at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing, Texas.

He leaves us all with cherished memories, laughs, and swelling hearts, knowing that he made a lasting impact on those around him. His laughter will be missed, along with his bright happy eyes.

Memorials may be sent to Point Comfort Methodist Church at PO Box 787, Point Comfort TX 77978.
