This entire community was shocked and grieved Sunday morning when the announcement came that our fellow townsman, Mr. J.E. Barnes had passed away that night a few minutes before mid-night. Few knew that Mr. Barnes had been ill and news of his death was a surprise to all. That night before retiring he complained of being ill with pains in his chest, and some time before midnight a doctor was called. His death was attributed to an heart attack. The funeral service was held Monday afternoon at 4:00 o’clock at the Edna Methodist Church and was conducted by the pastor, Rev. E.C. Young. The pallbearers were: Messrs. A.C. Egg, Mack Hutcheson, A.E. Westhoff, M.W. Hensley, Steele Simons of Edna and Geo. F. Simons of Houston. Jim Barnes was born in the State of Tennessee January 4, 1876, and came to Jackson County between 45 and 50 years ago. For many years he was foreman on several Jackson county ranches, and, in fact, was engaged in the handling of stock all his life. In June, 1908, he was united in marriage to Miss Blanche Wharton, a member of a prominent Jackson County family. To this union were born two daughters and seven sons, all of whom survive except two. They are: Elvin, Wharton (Bub), Edwin, Guy and John Lee, Milton, the youngest son, died a few years ago at the age of ten years. Tommy, the other son, was killed on Okinawa, leading his men in a charge on a Jap entrenchment. The daughters are Misses Willie Clay and Anita of Edna. During the late war, Mr. and Mrs. Barnes had the distinction of having six sons in service, and we might add that each one was a credit to his parents and to his country. Mr. Barnes, a man who was unusually quiet and retiring in his disposition, was very proud of his children, and especially of the record they made in the late war. He was thoroughly patriotic, and we know that he was made happy in that he through his manly sons was able to make such a great contribution to his country in time of need. We don’t suppose Jim Barnes had any enemies. Since his passing this writer heard a friend sum up his life in a few words: “Jim Barnes was a thoroughly good man.” We know of no greater tribute that could be paid a friend. To the bereaved wife and children the Herald, together with a host of friends in this section, extends heartfelt sympathy. The sad, but not unexpected news reached Edna relatives and friends Saturday morning, December 6th, that Mrs. ED BERGBREDE (ELIZABETH NICHOLSON BERGBREDE) had passed away at St. Joseph’s Infirmary where she had been for a week or more under treatment for a heart affliction. Death had been near for several days and her loved ones were at her bed side when the end came. The remains were brought to Edna Sunday morning and laid to rest in the Edna Cemetery Monday morning at 10:3- o’clock. Services were conducted at the Hevelka Funeral Home by her pastor Rev. C.I. KELLY of the Presbyterian Church. The pallbearers were DAVENPORT WHITE, STEELE SIMONS, WILLIAM MCCLURE, Monroe Traylor, KENNER MARMION and Hardeman Staples. The floral offering was beautiful and profuse mute evidence of the love and respect of a large circle of friends for the departed. Elizabeth Nicholson was born August 7, 1902 in Yoakum, being the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Nicholson, prominent and well known residents of South Texas. The greater part of her childhood was spent in Victoria. After graduating from high school, she attended C.I.A. at Denton two years. She was a gifted and talented musician and did much advanced studying in that line and for a time she taught music. On December 15th, 1923 she was united in marriage to Mr. Ed Bergbrede, a well known young man of this city (Edna). Mr. and Mrs. BERGBREDE have resided in New Orleans, Beaumont, Edna and Houston. Mrs. BREGBREDE was loved and admired by a large circle of friends because of her many commendable traits of character, pleasing personality and friendly manner. She had long since realized the fact that she was afflicted with a serious aliment, and probably realized, as did her loved ones that her days were numbered, yet she bore her affliction with Christian fortitude-never complaining; but always cheerful and happy. Truly in her untimely passing a good woman has been called to that home where illness and suffering are unknown. Mrs. BERGBREDE is survived by her husband and one daughter, Miss EDWINA, who is a student at C.I.A., Denton: her mother, Mrs. Thos. Nicholson of Devine: one brother, Mr. Fred Nicholson of Charleston, West Virginia, and one sister, Mrs. Errol Middleton of College Station, all of whom were present at the funeral. To these sorrowing ones the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy. Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral service, other than those mentioned above, were: Mrs. Anna Faulkner, Kerrville; Mr. and Mrs. Barney Daniel, Mrs. Jas. F. Welder, Jr., and Mr. Eubank of Victoria; Mr. and Mrs. DISSEN, Mrs. Kate Nicholson, Mr. and Mrs. J.K. MARMION, Miss Louise Bergbrede and Miss Patty Young of Houston; Errol Middleton of College Station, Mrs. Fred Nicholson of Charleston, West Virginia, and Miss Mildred Koontz of Inez. Ruben was born on March 16th, 1964, to Robert, Sr. and Sally Bermea of Ganado and passed away on May 29th, 2022, at the age of 58. He is preceded in death by his father Robert Bermea, Sr. and survived by his wife Leticia Bermea and Mother Sally Bermea. Ruben shared a life of love and laughter and is also survived by many siblings, children and grandchildren. Diane and Tommy, Sr. Tristan, Carolyn and Larry Hardeway, Molly and Danny Sless, Abraham Bermea, Robert Bermea, Jr., children; Anthony Leal, Angie Villarreal, Issac Leal, Monique Leal, Kaleb Leal, Rick Townley, Sal Townley, Patricia Perez, Cynthia Perez and fifteen grandchildren. Ruben was a man of many hats and that has proven to be true in more ways than one. He did in fact own many hats and you could usually find him moseying around town in his famous fedora or top hat precisely with a feather sticking out. But, also in the way he played so many different roles in so many lives. Stemming back to his years of raising his young children he was very much involved in all aspects of their lives and everything they were involved in. He coached many young kids and taught them the love of a game but life lessons along the way. Whether he was being Uncle Ruben to all the kids in his family, or if he was coaching, umpiring, or being a supporter from the stands, which was hardly ever because you couldn't keep him off the fields or court, he impacted lives as a leader and a role model to almost everyone who knew him. He spent the better part of his life being the helping hand anyone ever needed, and he knew no stranger. He was willing to do what needed to be done at any time. He spent many years serving his community in all sorts of ways including being a member and Chief of the Vanderbilt Volunteer Fire Department and loved every minute of it. On December 30th, 2017, Ruben married his love, Leticia and from there moving forward they were double the trouble, double the fun. You would never see one without the other, they were joined at the hip. They shared the love of family, fishing, camping, socializing and having a good time. Ruben loved being the sunshine and smile in your day you didn't even know you needed. He had the most vivacious personality and all who knew him were well aware that he was the life of every party. You could always find him at the DJ booth stealing the show with the mic in his hand. He loved big and he loved hard and he made sure everyone around him knew it. He left a legacy in so many lives of love, strength, resilience and so much laughter. His memory and spirit will live on in the lives of his friends, family, children and grandchildren. Ruben's services will be held Thursday, June 2nd, 2022, at the Assumption Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 9:am to 10:am, with Rosary being recited at 9:30 am, Mass will follow. There will be a Funeral Reception at the Parish Hall with food provided, 108 6th Street, Ganado, TX 77962. Any flower donations can be delivered to the Parish Hall in the honor of Ruben Bermea. Services have been entrusted to Russell Todish, of Ganado Funeral Home, 800 S. Third Street, Ganado, TX 77962, 361-771-2120.

Robert Riggs Bergstrom, 71 of Edna, Texas earned his wings and went to his forever home on Thursday, December 30, 2021. Bobby was born on Wednesday, February 1, 1950, to Clarence "Eldred" Bergstrom, Sr. and Janis Elaine Riggs Bergstrom in Wharton, Texas and was the third of four beloved children. After graduating from Edna High School in 1968, Bobby earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Science from Texas A&I in Kingsville and returned to Edna to join his father in their family farming endeavor until 2005. Growing up farming and ranching gave him fond interest in weather and shade trees; not a day went by that he didn't comment on at least one of them or find the shadiest spot to park. After retiring from farming, he went into the field of water management and chemical transfer where he employed his talents with multiple organizations in the Coastal Bend. He officially retired in 2020 and enjoyed a multitude of hobbies including reading, gardening, and stargazing. Bobby was also an avid runner, marathoner and mule deer hunter in his younger days as well as a slight daredevil on the ski slopes. He was a fantastic welder and known to be able to fix about anything, even if it wasn't the prettiest fix. Bobby was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He spent as much time as he could with his grandchildren - reading, playing, spelling, cuddling, he didn't care the activity, just loved to be with and encouraged them. He looked forward to watching them grow up to see what they would accomplish, and who they would become. He loved them fiercely, unconditionally and patiently and his eyes would light up at their smiles and laughter and general chaos. Bobby is survived by his wife, Sherrie; son Christian (John); daughter Heather Bergstrom Grantham (Robert); grandchildren, Crawford, Jake, and Milby Grantham, Brylie Ericson; brother Eldred, Jr. (Nancy) Bergstrom, sisters Nancy Kay Bergstrom Goggans (Gene) and Betty Sue Bergstrom Shaw. A gentle soul has gone to rest. Mrs. Clede H. Brown of Llano fell asleep in the Lord on December 8th. She was a deeply devout Christian, one who always put first things first, never being too busy to do things for her church. All who knew her were richer by having made her acquaintance. To know her was to love her, the young as well as the adults. The Brown family moved to Ganado about 44 years ago and stayed here until 1924 when they moved to Arkansas. They came back to Ganado two years ago, but were unable to buy a home, and moved to a new home in Llano about two months ago. Mrs. Brown was apparently enjoying good health, hence her passing came as a shock to her loved ones and many friends. Survivors are: Her husband, Mr. Clede Brown, three daughters, Mrs. Frances Britton, Mrs. Vivian Crute of Houston and Mrs. Virginia Sullivan of San Francisco, Calif.; two sons, Paul of Llano and C. H., Jr. of Houston; two grand children, Paul and Freda Sullivan, and a host of friends. Funeral services were held in the Ganado Methodist church with Rev. C. M. Nyquist, assisted by Rev. R. A. Bryan, conducted the service. Interment was in the Ganado Cemetery.
