John B. Banks

DIED, at his residence in this city, on Wednesday afternoon, January 28, 1874, Col. John B. Banks, aged fifty-seven years; formerly of Webberville, in this State, but for several years past a most worthy citizen of this city.—Galveston News.

When glancing at the above announcement in the Galveston News our heart was stricken beyond language to express. In 1837 we first met the young, husband, refined and high-tones John Baily Banks in New Orleans, then on his first visit to Texas, while we were returning home from a visit to “the States.” We crossed the gulf together in the brig Sam Houston, we having an uncle, (Major Jones Kerr, the first pioneer of Western Texas), an invalid sister and a young lady cousin, just from the convent of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, with us. The prolonged voyage on the gulf, with a succession of tornadoes and the usual severity of the weather, were well calculated to draw out the true nature of every one on board the tempest tossed vessel. Among others on board was the widow of Bailey Hardeman, one of the cabinet of President Burnet in 1836, and afterwards the wife of General William P. (commonly known as “old Golch”) Hardeman. Among the rest were Houston and two others (whose names are at this moment forgotten), who were murdered by Mexican bandits a year or two later. The trip to us is memorable.

From that day to this John B. Banks has pursued a course of life to win the esteem of all within his vicinage. He first established a rancho in Jackson county—afterwards removed to Washington county, where he married one of the loveliest women it has ever been our pleasure to know, who still survives. About 1851 he purchased the land known as Webber’s prairie, below Austin, and in 1853 beat the Hon. A. J. Hamilton for the Legislature, in a contest which excited all Texas at the time, and during which we, from another section, did all in our power to aid him.

Since the war he sold his fine plantation in Webber’s prairie (Webberville) and moved to Galveston, where, on our first return from exile in 1869, he was the first man to take us by the hand and offer us a home in his house, but hardly had done so when ex-Governor Lubbock, the late Judge Leslie A. Thompson and other old friends did the same.

The early settlement of Texas was fraught with innumerable incidents worthy of record in the highest romance. The whole career of John B. Banks, a modest and unassuming man, teems with illustrations of this fact. We have known of acts by him, when there were no newspapers in the country, which, if performed in towns or cities where papers were established institutions, would have ranked him with the first philanthropists of this or any other country. Their value, to us, was always heightened by the fact that there was neither editor, reporter or interviewer to emblazon his good deeds in print.

Years after knowing him so well, we made the acquaintance of his mother and sisters in St. Louis, Missouri, and then realized from whence his noble characteristics came. But we must close. His widow, his daughters and sons have our sympathies in their great loss on earth, with the consolation of our faith that so good a man, husband, father and citizen was never denied admission to heaven.

Katherine Eloise Larkin Billings

Katherine Eloise Larkin Billings was born on March 11,1947 and after a long, courageous battle with breast cancer went to be with the Lord on July 31, 2019.

Born in a prairie farmhouse on the outskirts of Cordele, Texas, Kathy never let her small beginnings dictate her big heart. She attended Southwest Texas State University on a work/study program in which she worked for the Dean of the college and in return received half of her room and board. Kathy graduated in 1969 with a major in math, a minor in English and a ring on her finger after marrying her high school sweetheart, Wayne Billings, between semesters. She went on to teach math at Three Rivers High School for 28 years. On top of this, she coached many UIL Math contestants and was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, where she played the piano and sang in the church choir for as long as she was able. Her faith was strong and an inspiration to those around her.

Kathy adored traveling and when her two sons and their families had to move overseas for their jobs, she didn’t waste any opportunity. Many vacations she took were centered around family and she enjoyed trips to Norway, Italy, Greece, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and all over the United States. Kathy was always at her best when coaching and spoiling grandchildren and was so proud that her boys chose a more adventurous route in life and explored destinations outside of Texas.

Kathy loved nature and enjoyed collecting shells on long beach walks. She was also an avid birdwatcher and bird lover, with multiple bird feeders in her yard that she never neglected to fill. She annually joined other “birders” at Choke Canyon to identify birds. Wayne and Kathy had a deal; she didn’t clean fish and Wayne didn’t clean babies. I think she got the better end of the deal. She loved to gamble and usually came back with money in her pocket.

Kathy’s house is dotted with lighthouses – from pillows to nightlights to magnets to light switch covers. Those who knew her will remember her love for them, but more importantly, they will remember Kathy as a lighthouse herself – she shone light on everyone around her, and not just her students. She had a true gift for helping others see what truly mattered. Kathy will be missed by all who knew her, who will never forget her legacy: live every day to the fullest and rejoice in the little things because life is so, so short. She taught everyone so many lessons that went beyond the classroom, lessons never to forget.

She was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Larkin.

Left to cherish her memory are Kathy’s mother, Carlee (Dittrich) Larkin; and Wayne, her husband of 50 years. She has also left behind two sons, Kevin Billings (Leah) of Pensacola, Fla. and Jason Billings (Carrie) of Littleton, Colo.; as well as seven grandchildren, (Matthew, Zachary, Audrey, Joshua, Kenna, Olivia and Tobin). Kathy is also survived by her two brothers, Tom (Lisa) Larkin and Sam (Sue) Larkin; her brother-in-law, John (Margie) Billings; her sister-in-law, Avis (Richard) Calhoun; as well as numerous nieces, grand-nieces, nephews and grand-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Three Rivers First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice that battles for the cure of breast cancer in remembrance of Kathy.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 3, 2019, at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Three Rivers.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2019, at First United Methodist Church in Three Rivers. Burial will follow at the Three Rivers Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Craig Neffendorf, Ramon Soliz, Mike Ruiz, Harry Schulz III, Nerio Perez, Jimmy Conn, Coby Crawford and Ken Clark.

Marmaduke Box

The Telegraph announces the death, at Rockport, Texas, of Mr. Marmaduke Box, aged eighty years, a soldier of 1812. For thirty-five years we have known him well in Fayette, Victoria and Jackson counties, as one of the salt of the earth, and a conscientious member of the Methodist church. He reared a large family of sons and daughters—the former having been good soldiers in the Mexican war and on our frontier. We remember the old gentleman and his family in the great epidemic of 1846, among Kentucky and Tennessee soldiers and German emigrants, at Victoria, as angels of mercy. Blessed be his memory.
