Lolita—Funeral services for Lee Alton Barfield, 64, of Lolita, who died in a two-vehicle traffic accident in Houston Wednesday, will be held at 3:30 p. m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Lolita. The Rev. Jimmy Smith, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Red Bluff Cemetery under direction of Slavik Funeral Home. The Lolita VFW Post also will conduct military graveside services. Pallbearers will be Robert Eberhardt, James Eberhardt, Jerry Chevalier, Mike Chevalier, Larry Cornejo and Larry Karl. Tammy Hensley, a secretary in the accident division of the Houston Police Department, said Barfield died from injuries sustained when his pickup truck was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer truck on the Eastex Freeway. Goldman A. Luttrell, 55, of Knobel, Ark., driver of the truck, also was killed in the accident. His 17-year-old grandson, Gregory Lynn Tate, also of Knobel, a passenger, sustained multiple cuts and bruises after being thrown clear of the wreckage. At the time of the accident at 11:30 a. m., Barfield was northbound in the outside lane of the freeway as the truck approached him from the rear in the adjacent lane. When in collision with Barfield’s vehicle, the truck broke through the guardrail and careened off the side of the elevated roadway. The cab separated from the trailer and crashed to the ground 28 feet below. The trailer, however, was left dangling from its rear axle lodged on the guardrail. A load of grain was spilled. The force of the impact slammed Barfield’s pickup into the guardrail, where it was demolished before coming to rest. Luttrell was pronounced dead at the scene. Barfield, his left arm severed at the shoulder, was life-flighted to Hermann Hospital, where he died a short time later. Ms. Hensley said an autopsy and toxicology report were ordered on Luttrall to determine his cause of death. Officers at the scene theorized Luttrall may have suffered a heart attack. The grandson, however, was quoted as saying his grandfather appeared to have fallen asleep at the wheel. Mr. Barfield was born July 15, 1920, in Groveton. He was employed as a contract guager and had resided in Jackson County since 1945. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lolita and the local VFW post. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II, was a past president of the Lolita Lions Club, and a former member of the Industrial Independent School District Board of Trustees. He is survived by his wife, LaVerne of Lolita, whom he married Sept. 20, 1942, in Oakland, Calif. Other survivors include three sons, Douglas and Donald, both of Houston, and David of Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Lee Chevalier and Mrs. Charlene Ingram, both of Houston; a brother, Alfred of Houston; and four grandchildren.
