Lolita—Andy Roy Baker, 51, of Lolita, passed away Friday, March 5, 2010, in Vanderbilt. He was born Aug. 20, 1958, in Georgetown.

He is survived by daughter, Kristen Baker; sisters, Beth White, Cathy Baker, Peggy Baker and Darlene Baker; and brothers, Clyde Lee Baker, Jack Baker and James Fitzgerald.

Graveside services were held at 2:30 p. m., Monday, March 8, 2010, at Red Bluff Cemetery.

Laverne Meyer Barfield

Funeral services for Laverne (Meyer) Barfield, 82, of Richmond, Texas will be held at 10:00 a. m., Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at Pecan Grove Baptist Church in Richmond, Texas with Pastor Barry Adkins officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 P. M. in Red Bluff Cemetery in Lolita, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 P. M. until 8:00 P. M. Tuesday, February 7, 2006 in the State Room of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg, Texas.

Laverne was born June 14, 1923 in New Wehdem, Texas to Edward and Emma Hackstedt Meyer. She was an active member of Pecan Grove Baptist Church. She passed away February 5, 2006 in Richmond, Texas.

Laverne is preceded in death by her husbands, Lee Alton Barfield and Thurman Gasaway; her parents, Edward and Emma Meyer; sister, Lula Luedke; and brothers, Billy and Bernie Meyer.

Laverne is survived by:

Creola Barnes, 65, of Edna, passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010.

Joe Henry Barnes

Joe Henry Barnes, 62, of Edna, passed away Monday, Sept. 7, 2009. He was born Sept. 12, 1946, in Edna, to the late Isabelle Dawson and George Barnes Jr. He was a retired laborer.

He is survived by his sisters, Willie B. Bryant of Edna, Sally Smith, Veola Sanders, and Sharon Barnes, all of Houston; and brothers, Rev. Billy Joe Barnes of Edna and Phil Barnes of Edna.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Cook-Butler Funeral Home in Edna.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cook-Butler Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Billy Joe Barnes officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Mary "Lizzie Ann" Barnes

Mary "Lizzie Ann" Barnes, 86, of Edna, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010. She was born April 22, 1923, in Edna, to the late Mary Williams and Bud Washington. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

She is survived by her foster daughter, Lanell Edwards of Strafford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Roosevelt Barnes.

Visitation will be noon to 6 p.m. Friday. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, the Rev. Leonard Hines officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Timothy Bauman

Edna—Timothy Bauman, 42, of Edna, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005.

He was born June 14, 1962, in Toledo, Ohio, to Donald Bauman of Swanton, Ohio, and Joanne Wilczynski Bauman of Florida. He was a Xerox Technician and a member of First United Methodist.

Survivors: wife, Deborah Bauman; daughters, Marisa Bauman of Louisiana and Courtney Bauman of Edna; step-daughters, Amber Anderson and Brittany Anderson, both of Edna; sons, Brandon Knott of Michigan and Tyler Bauman of Louisiana; brothers, Michael Bauman of Florida and David Bauman of Ohio.

Visitation will be 6:30 – 8 p. m. at Oaklawn Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 10 a. m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church of Edna, the Rev. Sue Huntsman officiating.

Robert L. Bednarz

Edna—Robert L. Bednarz, 68, of Edna, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003.

He was born Feb. 17, 1934, in Poth, to the late Robert H. and Theresa Flieller Bednarz. He was retired owner and jeweler of Robert’s Jewelry and was a Christian.

Survivors: daughters, Renee Rangel, Robin Bednarz and Kristi Bednarz, all of Edna; sisters, Evelyn Dittrich of Cordele, Lorraine McAnally of Jacksonville, Lucille Hodges and Mary Ann Womach, both of Kopperl, Jean Rose Durrett of Onalaska and Sandy Moody of West Columbia; and eight grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: parents; sister, Caroline Woods; and one grandchild.

Services will be 2 p. m. today at Oaklawn Funeral Home chapel, Moe Wes Rubac officiating.

Benjamin G. Bennatt Jr.

Edna—Benjamin Groce Bennatt Jr., of Edna, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005.

He was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Teague, to the late Benjamin Groce Bennatt Sr. and Sudie Post. He was a retired Process Operator for Mobil Oil and a member of First United Methodist. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran, serving in the U. S. Army, and a member of the Railsplitters Society.

Survivors: wife, Miriam “Tia” Patton; daughters, Julianna Jimerson of Victoria, Molly Elaine Bennatt of Lewisville, Miriam Courtney Bennatt of Edna, and Suzanne Dreyer of Port Lavaca; sons, Larry Benjamin Bennatt of Houston and Jared Foster Bennatt of Austin; sister, Sue Evelyn Davis of Houston; brother, Jim Bob Bennatt of Richards; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be 7 – 8:30 p. m. tonight at Slavik Funeral home chapel.

Services will be 11 a. m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, the Rev. Sue Huntsman officiating.

Joseph Billings

Joseph V. Billings, 74, of Victoria, died Wednesday in a local hospital following a short illness.

A native of Nopal, he was born Nov. 3, 1913, to the late Herman and Haddie Schultz Billings. Mr. Billings had been employed as a potman for Alcoa Aluminum for 23 years.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p. m. Thursday at Red Bluff Cemetery with the Rev. Lee Payne officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lauriell K. Billings of Victoria; two daughters, Mrs. David Gustine of Houston, Mrs. Mike Lange of Victoria; a son, Joe R. Billings of Georgetown; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Tongate of Zephyr, Mrs. Ercell Rutledge of Brownwood; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brother, Rodger Billings.

Kenneth Billings

Kenneth O. Billings, 92 was reunited with his beloved Mary Christine on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014. He was born in Smiley, Texas on Jan. 4, 1923 to the late Otto and Sue Hand Billings.

Survivors include; his son, Kenneth " Sonny" Billings, seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great- grandchildren. He was greatly loved and blessed abundantly.

Visitation and services will be held Saturday Oct. 11 at the Baptist Temple Church in Edna. Viewing will began at 9:30 a.m. and services will be at 11 a.m., with Rev. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the Red Bluff Cemetery.

J. R. Bland

Edna--J. R. Bland, 62, of Edna, died Saturday at his residence.

He was born June 27, 1927, in Taylor, Ark., son of Allie Fish Bland of Texarkana, Ark., and the late Joe Bird Bland. Mr. Bland had been employed as an underground utility foreman with Mercer Construction until his retirement in 1981. He was a veteran of the U. S. Armed Forces.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p. m. Monday at the Jackson County Funeral Home Chapel with Jack Bourland and Jerald King officiating.

Burial will be in the Red Bluff Cemetery in Lolita.

Pallbearers will be Lester Billings, Barney Janecka, Homer Spree, L. C. Ratley, James Thompkins and Bobby Weedle.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Lee Bland of Edna; three daughters, Rose Marie Venglar of Houston, Sharon Lee Smith of San Diego, Calif., Debbie Sinek of Inez; three sons, H. R. "Bubba" Bland of Edna, Joe B. Bland of Victoria and David Sinek of Inez; two sisters, Bennie Vanderbilt and Vernice Pate of Texarkana, Ark.; two brothers, Herchell and Joe L. Bland, both of Texarkana, Ark.; and 18 grandchildren.

Colby Lee Bowen

Austin-- Colby Lee Bowen, 33, of Austin, passed away September 13, 2017.

He was born July 10, 1984 in Austin to the late Michael D. Bowen and Lee Ann Carpenter Bowen.

He is survived by his Aunts, Mary Bowen Orr, Paula Bowen Obsta, Stephanie Bowen Meyer, Anita Carpenter Gross, Manon Bowen, Carolyn Carpenter and Jennifer Haschke; Uncles, Tony Bowen Jr., Bobby Orr, Bobby Gross, and Clint Haschke; step-grandmother, Lydia Carpenter; and great-nephew, Corbin Carpenter.

Preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Anthony G. Bowen, Leona M. Bowen, Arthur (Hoppy) Wheeler, Emma Joe Wheeler, and Jack Carpenter; and Uncles, Clayton Carpenter and Russell Carpenter.

Colby loved his family and friends, Crested Butte, CO, Austin Town Lake, Port O'Connor, Fishing, Music, and his dog Nola.

He will be missed by his Family and all his cousins and friends. God Bless Him!

Leander Brod

Leander “Andy” Brod, of Edna, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at the age of 91. He was born in East Bernard, on Feb. 28, 1924, to the late Leander Frank and Mary Lucy Davis Brod.

Andy served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years. He was also a member of the VFW Post 8556 in Lolita and the American Legion Post 346 in Ganado. Andy worked as a heavy equipment operator for Local Union 450 for several years. 

Andy is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Virginia Bland Brod of Edna; daughters, Rose Marie Robin and her husband Chris of Houston, Janet Ready and fiancé Vance Ready of Galveston, Sharon Ambrosia of California; sons, Bubba Bland and his wife Shirley of Edna and Joe Bland and his wife Marsha of Victoria; brother, John Brod of Boling; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Christopher Allen "Big S." Brooks

Christopher Allen "Big S." Brooks, 31, of Victoria, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2011. He was born Dec. 7, 1979, in Victoria, to Debra Brooks Jones of Victoria. He had been employed with Lack's Warehouse in Victoria, and he was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Edna.

He is survived by his mother; daughter, Destiney Brooks of Victoria; son, Quincy Brooks of Victoria; and brothers, Arthor Ray Jones Jr. of Houston and Jarrod James Brooks of Victoria.

He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Rashad Brooks.

Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, at Cook-Butler Funeral Home in Edna.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Shiloh Baptist Church, with Rev. Claude Prince officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Ada L. Brown

Ada L. Brown, 79, of Edna, died Saturday, March 17, 2007 in Victoria.

She was born in Jackson County to the late Meck and Zubia Ward Barnes. She married the late Jacob Brown. She was retired.

She is survived by one son, Charles James "C.J." Barnes of Edna; one sister, Ruth Deloris Brooks of Edna; one brother, Roger Watson of Edna; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Ola Joyce Tisdale; two sisters, Myrtle Hodges and Sarah Barnes; and six brothers, Roosevelt Barnes, Willie Fuller, Tom Glenn, M.B. Barnes, William Barnes and Leon Barnes.

LaVaughan Brown

Round Rock--LaVaughan Dryer Brown, of Round Rock, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at the age of 92. She was born in Bolivar, Missouri, on June 7, 1920.

LaVaughan is survived by daughter, Jeanne Plantiff and husband Gary of Las Vegas, NV; son, Danny Brown and wife Rose of Round Rock; sisters, Ada Schrank and Nina Stelle; and grandchildren, Todd Brown, Kim Johnson, Troy Brown, and Dayna Powell. She is also survived by 8 great grandchildren.

LaVaughan is preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Julia Dryer; sisters, Geraldine Kypfer and Bonnie Van Note; and brothers, J.D. Dryer and Darrell Dryer.

Visitation will be Friday, October 5, 2012, 10-12 am, at Oaklawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, October 5, 2012, also at Oaklawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Red Bluff Cemetery. Reverend Robert Krause will be officiating.

Robert T. "The Colonel" Brown Sr.

Robert T. "The Colonel" Brown Sr., 85, of Lolita, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011 in Port Lavaca. He was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Spring Creek, Pa.

He was a WWII veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star, Bronze Star with Cluster, Bronze Star with Triple Cluster, Silver Star, Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart and Presidential Citation. He served in the 119th Infantry 30th Infantry Division.

He was a lifetime VFW member and past post commander of VFW Post 8556 in Lolita.

The Colonel was a carpenter who enjoyed oil painting, woodworking, and gardening. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Brown of Lolita; son, Robert T. Brown Jr. (Linda) of Edna; stepdaughter, Glenda Anderson (Alan) of Sweet Home; and stepsons, Larry Treaster (Ava) of Connecticut, Sam Treaster (Janet) of Port Lavaca, and Eric Treaster (Valerie) of Port Lavaca.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michelle Brown of Edna, Bettye "BJ" Rakowitz (Bryan) of Corpus Christi, Robert T. Brown III of Edna, Cindy Brown of Edna; great-granddaughter, Bryleygh Brown of Edna; and step-grandchildren, Timothy Treaster, Justin Treaster, Christy Treaster, Rebecca Treaster, Erica Treaster, Megan Treaster, Alexandra Treaster, Shannon Treaster, and Tristan Treaster; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna Wilson Brown and Joseph S. Brown; first wife, Bettye Brown; brothers, Al White and William White; sister, Betty Kuhn; and stepson, Scott Treaster.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 29, at Slavik Funeral Chapel in Edna. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Slavik Funeral Chapel with Mr. Eric Treaster officiating. Interment will follow at Red Bluff Cemetery in Lolita.

John Browning, 80, Died at His Home; Rites Are Today

John Thomas Browning, 80, retired farmer of the Lolita community, died suddenly at his home Wednesday morning.

Funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Lolita Baptist Church and burial was in the Red Bluff Cemetery under the direction of the Slavik Funeral Home. Rev. Drew of the Lolita church officiated

Six grandsons were pallbearers.

Mr. Browning was born in Mississippi Nov. 10, 1871. He had been in Jackson County since 1917.

Survivors are six children, Clyde Browning of Houston and Mrs. Ira Everage of Houston, Mrs. Walter McFeron, Mrs. Bryant Thedford and Mrs. Grover Klaus of Lolita; a sister, Mrs. Johnny Sappington of New Albany, Miss., and 17 grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Mrs. Tom Browning Died Last Sunday – Moretta Browning

Funeral services for Mrs. Browning, well known and highly esteemed resident of Lolita, were held at the Lolita Baptist Church Monday afternoon at three o’clock. Rev. J. M. Thomas officiated, assisted by Rev. T. D. Felts and Rev. Frank Hollan. She was buried in the Red Bluff Cemetery.

Mrs. Browning died at her home Sunday. She had been ill some time. She was 73 years old December 19th.

A resident of Lolita for 31 years, Mrs. Browning was a loyal member of the Baptist Church there. Mr. and Mrs. Browning celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary last December 6th.

She was born Maretta Celia Robbins in New Albany, Mississippi, December 19, 1875. There she married Mr. Tom Browning in 1893.

Surviving are her husband; four daughters, Mrs. Walter McFeron of Lolita; Mrs. Bryant Thedford of Red Bluff; Mrs. Ira Everage of Houston; and Mrs. Grover Klaus of Lolita; and three sons, Clyde, of Wharton; Lowell of Houston, and Marvin, who is in the United States Army stationed at Ft. Benning, Georgia; 17 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Browning was a devoted wife and mother, a loving, helpful neighbor and friend. She thought always of others, and her going has saddened the community in which she lived.

Pallbearers were grandsons: James, Jay and Burnett Nowlin of Houston; Bill McFeron of Abilene; Darrell and L. T. Thedford of Lolita.

Larry J. Buchanan

Lolita—Larry Joe “Buck” Buchanan, 60 of Lolita died Monday, Oct. 10, 1994.

He was born March 25, 1934, in Stockdale to the late Jack R. and Muriel Stewart Buchanan. He married the former Rose Marie Buentello on Dec. 5, 1953, in San Antonio. He served in the U. S. Army from 1955-57. He was retired after 25 years as a welder for Alcoa. He was a member of Alcoa’s 25-year club and a member of Vanderbilt Church of Christ.

Survivors: wife; daughters, Jacqueline Marie Schmidt of Phoenix, Ariz., and Valorie Ann Watson of Mission Valley; sons, Larry Joe Buchanan Jr. of Benbrook and Wesley Chad Buchanan of Lolita; and nine-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p. m. today, Slavik Funeral Home chapel, Robert Willis officiating.

Burial: Red Bluff Cemetery under the auspices of VFW Post 8556, Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 782-2152.

David G. Bush

Lolita—David G. Bush, 48, of Lolita, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002.

He was born Dec. 23, 1953 in Brownwood, to Sam and Annie King Bush of Edna. He was a mechanic and a member of Lolita Baptist Church.

Survivors: wife, Mary Bush; son, Keith Bush of Lolita; parents; and sisters, Kathy Harvey and Betty Jean Jenkins, both of Brownwood.

Visitation will be 2 – 5 p. m. today at Oaklawn Funeral Home chapel.

Alice Butler

Alice Josephine Butler, 83, of Edna went to be with the Lord on Jan. 12, 2013. She was born on March 5, 1929, in Oklahoma City, Okla. to the late William B. and Irene Eslick Kelley.

She truly knew how to love and be loved.

Alice is survived by her sister, Maxine Taylor of Paris; daughters, JoAnn Bell, Sylvia Dolan, Deborah Davis, Lena Cunningham, and Tina Moffett, all of Edna; sons, Franklin McClure of Bastrop and Arnold “Bobbie” Butler of Corpus Christi; 22 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and 11 great great-grandchildren.

Along with her parents, Alice is preceded in death by her life-long companions, Arnold “Tex” Butler and Donald Frances McClure; sister, Margaret Tippit; brothers, Donald and Clifford Kelley; and son, Donald H. McClure; granddaughters, Alice Bledsoe and McKaylah McClure; and great-grandson, Blaine Mabry.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 5 – 7 p. m. at Oaklawn Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2 p. m., Thursday, Jan. 17 at Oaklawn Funeral Home with the Rev. George Tompkins officiating. Burial will follow at Red Bluff Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Donald McClure, Russell McSland, William E. White, Jeff Sparr, Jeffrey Graham, Christ Bearden, Zee Shan Baig, Sturgis Cunningham, and Ronnie Hadley.

Honorary pallbearers are Alice’s grandchildren, great, and great-great-grandchildren.

Arnold Sidney "Tex" Butler

Arnold Sidney "Tex" Butler, 81, of Edna, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2010 in Victoria. He was born Oct. 8, 1928, in San Marcus, to the late Vernon Gifford Butler and Lena Marz Butler. He was a retired brick layer and truck driver.

He is survived by his lifetime companion, Alice Jo Butler; daughters, JoAnn Bell, Sylvia Dolan, Lena Cunningham, Debbie Davis, and Tina Moffett, all of Edna; sons, Bubbie Butler of Corpus Christie and Frankie McClure of Bastrop; sisters, Ruby Joyce Button and Arlene Fowler, both of El Campo, Norma Jean Crider of Lockhart, and Doris Crider of Criderville; brothers, Bill Butler of Lockhart and Mark Scott of San Antonio; and cousin, Erlene Airhart.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, at Red Bluff Cemetery near Lolita, the Rev. George Tompkins officiating.

Pallbearers will be W.C. Parrett, Christopher Moffett, D.L. McClure, Jeff Sparr, Jeffrey Graham, and Fred Clay.

Darrin Douglas Butler

Darrin Douglas Butler, of Edna, went to be with the Lord, on December 18, 2018, at the age of 52. He was born in Ganado, Texas, on December 5, 1966 to Margerine Butler Williams and the late Rudolph Otis Littlejohn, Jr. Darrin graduated from Edna High School in 1985, then went on to college at TSTI were he received his Associates

Degree in Applied Science, Automotive Technology.

Darrin worked as a Automotive Technician at Midas from 1988-1998 were he moved up to Assistant Manager from 1998-2006, then went to ALCOA, Inc. from 2006-2015 before his current employer SGS-Petroleum. Darrin loved his football team the “Dallas Cowboys.” He was an amazing husband, son, father, grandson, nephew, cousin, and true friend who will be missed ever so dearly.

Darrin is survived by the love of his life; his beautiful and loving wife of 23 years, Nicole Lee Butler; mother and step-father, Margerine Butler Williams and Ronald E. Williams; children, Darryan D.N. Butler, Darrin N.B. Butler, Jr., and Darra A.D. Butler; fur grandbabies, Sami and King Butler; maternal grandmother/second mom, Verna Lee Butler; sisters, Verna Janene English (Clifford), Ayreonna Turner, and Kiia Robinson; brother, Darrell D. Butler, Sr.(Charmanie); great aunt, Delores Hurd; aunts, Virginia R. Evans (Horace, Sr.), Diane D. Word (Nigel, Sr.), Myrtle J. Ware, Jacquelyn Turner, and Terrelyn Thorton (Clifford); uncle, Norvell Butler; mother-in-law, Jane Z. Pena; father-in-law, David S. Pena; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Darrin is preceded in death by all great-grandparents, and fraternal grandparents, his father and his fur grandson, Chewy Butler.

Visitation was Saturday, December 22, 2018, from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., with the funeral service at 2 p.m., at the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Mount Olive Cemetery of Edna with the Rev. Garry L. Roberts officiating.

Willie J. Butler, Sr., 60, of Sugar Land, died Friday, April 16, 2010. He was born in Edna.

Visitation will be Friday, April 23, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Family Worship Center, 910 Brand Lane, Stafford.
