Frances Zarate Ballin, 61, of Louise, formerly of Edna passed away on Wednesday, April 20 in Victoria. She was born Oct. 30, 1949 in Ganado to the late Manuel V. Zarate, Sr. and Josephine Jacinto Zarate. She was a retired HEB clerk and homemaker. She is survived in death by her husband, Ben Ballin of Louise; sisters, Mary Herrera and Jane Pena of Edna, Theresa and husband, Candido Benavides of The Woodlands, Margie and husband, Jose Mendoza of Houston, and Yolanda and husband, David Michael Robson of Houston; brothers, Manuel Zarate, Jr. and wife, Emily of Edna, Jimmy Zarate and wife, Sylvia of Edna, and Frank Zarate and wife, Angie of El Campo; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation and a rosary will be held from 5 – 7 p. m. Sunday, April 24 at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a. m. Monday, April 25 at St. James Catholic Church in Edna. Burial will follow at Latin American Cemetery in Edna. Rev. Michael Petering will be officiating. Edna—Guadalupe Acosta Ballin Sr., 83, of Edna died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1994. He was born July 20, 1911, in Refugio to the late Pablo and Jesusa Acosta Ballin. He married the former Dora Estrello on June 16, 1942, in Edna. He was a retired construction worker for Hunt Oil Field Co. and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. Survivors: wife; daughter, Mary Jane Harrison of Victoria; sons, Lupe Ballin Jr. and George Ballin, both of Victoria, Jesse Ballin of Austin and Ray Ballin of Edna; sister, Margaret Juarez of Victoria; brothers, Jimmie Ballin of Cuero, Marcus Ballin of Edna and Ben Ballin of Louise; and three grandchildren. Edna—Janie Ballin, 50, of Edna died Tuesday in a Victoria hospital after a long illness. The body will lie in state in Slavik Funeral Home chapel here Wednesday until 4 p. m. when it will be taken to the St. Agnes Catholic Church and lie in state where a rosary will be recited at 8 p. m. in the church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church with the Rev. Joe Hybner officiating. Burial will be in Edna Latin American Church. Mrs. Ballin was born June 24, 1931, in Jackson County. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the G. I. Forum. She and her husband, Marcus Ballin, were married Sept. 29, 1945, in Edna. She is survived by her husband; her mother, Victoria Trevino; two daughters, Bertha Moya and Becky Espinosa; and two sons, Amando and Noel, all of Edna; four sisters, Josie Falcon of San Antonio, Linda Bosquez of Bay City and Otillia Vasquez and Lucy Trevino, both of Edna; three brothers, Ben and Raymond Trevino of Edna and Joe Trevino of Victoria; and seven grandchildren.

Marcus A. Ballin, 88, of Edna, passed away Monday May 21, 2012. He was born on Oct. 7, 1923 in Edna to the late Pablo and Jesusa Ballin. Marcus is survived by two daughters, Becky Espinosa and husband Julio, Bertha Moya and husband Paul; two sons, Armando Ballin and wife Agnes and Noel Ballin and wife Peggy; Brother, Ben Ballin and sister, Margaret Juarez; 13 grandchildren, Justin, Jamian and Jackie Espinosa, Christy and Bryan Moya, Leigh Ann Carter, Shalene Martinez, Sharice Estrada, Shaunya, Ryan, Roman, Robby and Regan Ballin; and 11 great-grandchildren, Jacob Espinosa, Christopher Rivera, Rosalie Carter, Devyn, Skyla, and Judas Martinez, Nikolas Estrada, Abigail and Andrew Villarreal, Seth Hunt and Lainee Ballin. Marcus was retired from the Edna Rice-Belt warehouse. Preceded in death are his parents, wife Janie Ballin; two sisters, Otilia Barragan and Cecelia Morales; and two brothers, Jimmy and Lupe Ballin. Visitation was May 23 at the Slavik Funeral Home in Edna, from 5 to 8 p. m. with a rosary at 7 p. m. Funeral services were on May 24 at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna at 10:30 a. m., with the Rev. Michael Petering officiating, followed by interment in the Edna Latin-American Cemetery. Edna—Dan Barrera, 54, of Lolita, died Wednesday in a Victoria hospital. A resident of Jackson County for 50 years, Mr. Barrera was born July 14, 1913, in Inez. Rosary was recited Tuesday night at Slavik Funeral Home. Mrs. Barrera, widow of Santana Barrera, died Monday at her home here. She was born in Inez on Sept. 2, 1888, and moved to Edna in 1910. Her husband died in 1949. Mrs. Barrera is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Olivia Nava of Edna; two sons, Louis Barrera of Edna and Dan Barrera of Lolita; a brother, Charles Garza of Inez; two sisters, Mrs. Concepcion Ruiz of Rosenberg and Mrs. Mesinda Ansaldua of Corpus Christi, and 10 grandchildren.

Born June 13, 1923, in Eagle Lake to Jose and Elena Ortiz Barrios, he was a resident of Jackson County for about 40 years and a farm worker in the La Salle area. Edna—Roberto Garza Bermea, 44, of Vanderbilt, brother of Olivia Rivas of Victoria, died Tuesday in an Edna hospital following a short illness. He was born Jan. 27, 1944 in Edna to Marcus and Eloisa Bermea. He worked for L & P Lease Service. A rosary will be recited Thursday at 7 p. m., at the Slavik Funeral Home Chapel in Edna. Funeral services will be held Friday, at 10 a. m., at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna with the Rev. Michael O’Shaughnessy officiating. Burial will follow in the Edna Latin American Cemetery under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Surviving in addition to his parents of Vanderbilt and his sister are his wife, Sally Bermea of El Campo; three daughters, Diane Tristan and Molly Sless, both of Ganado and Caroline Bermea of El Campo; three sons, Reuben Bermea and Roberto Bermea Jr., both of Ganado and Abraham Bermea of Vanderbilt; two more sisters, Stella Arredondo of Edna, Irene Leal of Jefferson, Wis.; two brothers, Leonard and Ernest Bermea, both of Vanderbilt; and seven grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Abel Marroquin, Roland Arredondo, Tommy Tristan, Ezekial Bermea, Ablardo Garza and Danny Sless.

Ganado--Funeral services for N. J. Boston, 45, of Ganado will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday from the Cook Funeral Chapel with the Rev. L. B. Elliott officiating. Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery under direction of the Cook Funeral Home. Mr. Boston was a native of Jackson County, born on March 3, 1927. He was employed at a local gin before his illness, and died Monday in a Ganado hospital. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rochell Boston of Ganado, and two brothrs, R. L. Boston of Galveston and Lloyd of Ganado.

San Antonio--Thyra Oneita Sayles was the youngest of six children born to the late Matthew W. Sayles and Norma Bass Sayles. Thyra embraced Christ at an early age and assimilated with Shiloh Baptist Church. She later joined Scruggs United Methodist Church where she was actively involved until her health began to fail. Mrs. Thyra Bowden began her professional career as a licensed barber. She later attended Licensed Vocational School in Granada, Texas and was a Surgical Nurse for more than 30 years. She began her career as a Sales Representative for the Batesville Casket Company, taking over from her husband, John Williard Bowden, where she had a fruitful career for more than 20 years. She leaves to cherish previous memories, a daughter, Sandra Cranford, one son, Matthew Washington, both of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, LaNita McCollum (Kevin), Converse, Texas; Derek Webb (Maria), Dallas, Texas; Shawn Dean, San Antonio, Texas; Vanessa Washington, Fort Worth, Texas; three great grandchildren, Taylor and Derek II, Dallas, Texas, and Antwon Walker, San Antonio, Texas; one great-great granddaughter; one cousin who was reared with her as a sister, Laura Hazley Giles, Austin, Texas; one sister-in-law, Maxine Sales, and nephews, Tom Sayles, a grandnephew and niece, Matthew Sayles and Jennifer Sayles, all of Los Angeles, California; and a legion of other kindred, colleagues and friends. Ruby Vivian Bradley, of Edna, Texas went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 10, 2018, at the age of 99. She was born on October 22, 1918, in Hungerford, Texas, to the late James Carter Morgan, Sr. and Ruth Odelia Odom Morgan. Ruby was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be missed dearly. She is survived by her daughters, Marian E. Psencik, Ruth L. Corbitt, and Linda F. Junek (Joe); sons, Kenneth R. Bradley, Harvey G. Bradley, David L. Bradley (Betty), and Thomas J. Bradley (Lynda); brother, James Carter Morgan, Jr.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ruby is preceded in death by her loving husband Tommie Robert Bradley; sisters, Rescie Napoleon, Sibyl White, and Selma Thomas. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Aug. 12, from 4 to 6 p.m., in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., on Monday, Aug. 13, in the First Baptist Church of Edna. Mildred Elaine Herrington Branham, 88, formerly long time resident of Bee County and Jackson County, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2016. She was born on May 27, 1928 in Ganado, to John Barry Herrington and Mildred Conovey Herrington. Survivors include her sons, Robert E. Branham, Jr. and Walter Barry Branham; brother, Bobbie Lee Herrington; and one grandchild. Preceded in death are her parents, and her husband Robert E. Robert Branham Sr., 86, of Edna passed away on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013. He was born on Sept. 1, 1927 to the late Walter and Cecil Branham. He was a long-time farmer and rancher of Jackson County. He is survived by his wife Elaine Branham; sons Robert Branham Jr. and Barry Braham; sisters Delores Hines and Sharon Holloway; and one grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother W. L. Branham. Visitation was Oct. 29 from 5-7 p. m. at Slavik Funeral Home in Edna. Services were Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 2 p. m. at First Methodist Church, Edna, with Rev. Bernard Ritchea officiating. Interment will follow at Flourney Cemetery. Ismael Joseph Brito, 38, of Ganado, passed away on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018. He was born on Feb. 2, 1980 in Wharton, Texas to Jose Ismael Brito and Juanita Palacios Brito. Ismael is survived by his parents, his wife Bridget Sanchez, his daughter, his sons, also his sisters, and brothers.
