Last Friday night in the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Mr. Otto Asbeck, a long time and popular resident of the Edna section, passed away following a brief illness. He had suffered for a few short weeks with some type of stomach trouble, and Sunday, January 2nd, was taken to the hospital in Houston. His condition continued alarming, and a day or two later he suffered a heart attack. Since that time his condition grew worse and at 11:40 Friday night, January 7th, be passed on.
The remains were brought
to Edna by the Slavik Funeral Home Saturday, and Sunday at 2 :00 p. m. The remains were laid to rest in the Edna Cemetery beside those of his parents. The pallbearers were his nephews: Messrs. Walter, George, Steve, Carlie and Robert Lee Asbeck of Houston and Phil Asbeck of Edna. On the 10th day of December, 1882, Otto Asbeck, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Asbeck, was born in Kinney, Washington County. His parents moved to Jackson County in 1891 and bought a ranch in the Burnettsville neighborhood, 4 miles above Edna. His father served this precinct as county commissioner for several terms, and was prominent in all worthwhile county enterprises. Otto was a man who enjoyed his friends and neighbors. For many years, as a child, youth and man, this writer lived next door to him out in the Burnettsville neighborhood, hence we knew him well. We knew that he was a good neighbor in the finest sense of the word. We knew that he was a friend who could be depended upon on any occasion, whether i in the time of sadness or the time of gladness. This friend was ever ready to share these experiences with you. This type of friendship and, almost daily associations continued through the, years until the Good Master called this friend to a higher life; a life where the true meaning of friendship was understood and universally practices: “Ye are no longer called servants, but friends.” Otto and his brother, Ben, who have resided together for many years, recently sold the major portion of their ranch to a niece and her husband, but they reserved 50 or 75 acres where they recently completed a modern home and had moved into the new quarters only a few weeks since. Otto was a member of the Edna Rotary Club and the Edna Methodist Church, having served his church as steward for some time. While he was very retiring in the active work of his church, few men treasured his church affiliations and associations more than he. . A few months ago he had occasion to speak of his church, its pastor and its members, to this writer, and we knew that he was very happy in his church life. Three brothers and many nephews and nieces are left to mourn the passing of this good man. The three brothers are Messrs. Louis N. Asbeck of Houston, and Ben F. and Eddie Asbeck of Edna. And to these bereaved ones the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy.
Out-of-town relatives
attending the funeral in Edna Sunday were: Mr. and Mrs. E. Heineke, Seguin.
Out-of-town friends were:
Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Medley, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Cooper, Mr. and Mrs. Millian,
Mr. and Mrs. Brigendine, and Mrs. Agnes V. Parker, Houston.
