David Hugh Allen
Mr. Dave H. Allen Died Here Tuesday

The people of Edna were shocked and saddened soon after the noon hour Tuesday when word came that our friend and fellow townsman, David H. Allen, had passed away at his home in this city soon after partaking of the noon meal. Mr. Allen, bookkeeper at the Jackson County State Bank, had been at the hank all morning, apparently enjoying his usual health, but when he got home at noon he complained to his wife that his eyes were burning and that he was feeling ill. She assisted him to the bathroom to wash his eyes and he collapsed on the bathroom floor. A physician was immediately called, hut no human power could stay the hand of death and within a few minutes he passed on.

The funeral service was held at the Allen Memorial Presbyterian Church at 4:00 p. m. Wednesday and was conducted by his pastor, Rev. .John H. Newton. Interment was made in the Edna Cemetery.

At the grave the Edna Masons had charge of the ceremony. Mr. Allen was one of the most prominent Masons in South Texas, and had held almost every office in this lodge.

The funeral procession was perhaps the largest ever seen in this city, and it was Indicative of the popularity of this good man. The profuse and beautiful floral offering bore mute testimony of the high esteem in which the deceased was held by friends and neighbors.

David H. Allen was born in Louisville, Ky. August 10, 1882, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Allen, former well known and highly esteemed residents of Louisville and Edna. He was a nephew of the late Mr. J. W. Allen, one of the pioneer business men of Jackson County and who established Jackson County’s first hank. The subject of this sketch moved to Edna with his parents when he was a youth, and had resided here since that time. He was a graduate of the Edna High School, a private school of this city founded and conducted by the late Mr. John Correll. He was also a graduate of Austin College, a Presbyterian school at Sherman, Texas. After graduating from Austin College, he attended the University of Kentucky where he was awarded a degree in both mechanical and electrical engineering.

On December 10th, 1910, he was united in marriage at Edna to Miss Norma Davenport, a member of a pioneer and prominent Jackson County family.

Mr. Allen was affectionately known as "Dave” Allen, and he seemed to be a "part and parcel” of the banks of Edna; first being employed by the Allen National Bank and later by the Jackson County State Bank. For more than thirty-slx yours he was identified with these banks. He was not only a competent man in this work, but he was universally loved because of his sincere and accommodating disposition. Dave Allen probably never in his life offended a friend by deed or word; he was the friend of all; the very exemplification of the good neighbor. No man ever questioned his honesty or integrity.

Mr. Allen was one of the best posted Masons in South Texas. For many years he devoted a goodly portion of his time and thought to the high principles of this great order. He was a man who believed in God, and while he was reticent in all his affiliations, he was an active church member for many years. At the time of his passing he was a member of the Board of Elders of the Allen Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Dave Allen will be missed in many avenues of life in our city.

He is survived by his wife, and two sisters, Mesdames Wm. Megginson and Geo. M. Rhodes of Stanton, Va., and two brothers, Messrs. Foree Allen of Dallas and Sam Allen of Mississippi.

The Herald joins the many other friends of these bereaved ones in extending heartfelt sympathy.

She had suffered a sudden attack of illness about two weeks ago at her home In this city. 1919-20. In this city in 1910, she was united in marriage to the late Mr. David H. Allen, Jr., also a member of a prominent and pioneer Jackson County family. Mr. Allen died in April, 1948 at his home in Edna following a heart attack. Mrs. Allen had been a member of the Presbyterian Church since early childhood. She had served her church in many capacities, and had served the Auxiliary of the Presbyterian Church as district president.

She had long been an active member of the Eastern Star, serving the local chapter in every capacity, and then her work was expanded until site had served her district as president and the State of  Texas as Grand Worthy Matron.

In her church and Eastern Star work Mrs. Allen made many friends throughout Texas, and many of these friends were present at the funeral service Saturday.

She was a talented woman and few people were more loyal and earnest in any task she undertook.

Mrs. Alien was next to the last surviving member of the once large Davenport family. Now the only
surviving member is Mrs. B. W. (Ruth) McDowell, and to her the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy.

Auto-Truck Crash Kills Edna Man, 19

El Campo, Jan. 29—Clarence Anders, 19, Edna oil field worker, was fatally injured Tuesday when his car and a milk truck collided on U. S. Highway 59 two and a half miles southwest of El Campo.

State Highway Patrolman George Robinson said Anders died at Nightingale Hospital at 1:20 p. m., less than two hours after the accident occurred at 11:35 a. m.

Robinson gave this account:

Anders was driving toward El Campo, reportedly to start work on a new job Wednesday. He applied brakes to avoid running into the rear of a car traveling in the same direction. His car swerved and collided head-on with a milk truck driven by Edwin F. Baca, 44, Wharton. Baca was traveling away from El Campo when he met Anders.

The car skidded 105 feet before the crash. The motor flew out after the impact. A wrecker was required to separate the two vehicles. Damage to the 1954-model truck was estimated at $1000. The 1950-model two-door sedan was a total loss with damage estimated at $225.

Baca suffered cuts and broken ribs but was scheduled for dismissal from Nightingale Hospital Wednesday.

W. and Mearl Anderson of Woodsboro, Earl of Ganado, and Elbert of El Campo. Besides his immediate family, he leaves to mourn his passing 15 grand children, 2 sisters and one brother.
