Irene Blanche Smith was born in Comanche County, Texas, Nov. 17, 1895 and died at her home near Palacios, Nov. 22, 1930 at the age of 35 years and seven days. At the age of 5 years she moved with her parents to Olivia in Calhoun county, and moved to this county ten years later. She was married to V. C. Anders in 1915, and to this union were born five children, Verne, Jack, Weldon, Virginia and Melvin. The deceased joined the Baptist Church when about 14 years of age and has been a faithful Christian every since, giving her heart to her Savior. She had been sick about two years and all that medical skill and loving friends could do to help her was done, but without avail--her Savior called her home. The husband and children mourn the loss of a devoted wife and loving mother, and her many friends will miss her sweet comradeship. She was buried at Palacios cemetery Nov. 23, services conducted by Rev. Carroll B. Ray, her pastor. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Dan Meador, Van Meador, Tommy Smith, Walter “Sandy” Rabon, Keith Bryan, Brent Bonnot, John Cavasos and Andrew DeLaGarza. Atkins died Monday. His body was found after the Edna Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the victim’s residence, 301 N. Colorado St. Justice of the Peace Francis Blanchard ruled that Atkins’ death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No autopsy was ordered. Victoria Advocate, March 21, 1984 Volunteer Fireman Discovers Man’s Body Edna—A 31-year-old man was found dead Monday morning by a member of the Edna Volunteer Fire Department. The discovery occurred while department volunteers were fighting a fire at the victim’s two-bedroom residence. The fully-clothed body of James Arnold Atkins was discovered on a bed in a rear bedroom of the home, located at 301 N. Colorado St., by fire-fighter Roy Taylor Roberson. After the discovery, an ambulance was called to the scene. However, closer examination revealed that Atkins apparently died from a single gunshot wound to the upper chest. A semi-automatic rifle was found on the bed and a .357-caliber handgun was discovered on the floor. Justice of the Peace Francis Blanchard conducted a coroner’s inquest at the scene. At 11:05 a. m., Blanchard ruled that Atkins’ death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An autopsy was not ordered. When the firemen arrived at the house shortly after 10 a. m., they reportedly observed a good deal of smoke but little or no flame. Upon entering, the firemen reportedly discovered a burning car tire leaning against a living room closet door. City fire marshal Bill Tarver said it appeared as though the tire was the source of the fire. Atkins was an assistant surveyor for Jackson County. Investigating officer Glen Mutchler said the victim’s father, Jackson County Surveyor W. H. Atkins of Edna, said that when his son did not show up for work, he decided not to bother him since work was slow. Mutchler said that based on the condition of the body, the victim had not been dead long before the firefighters arrived at the scene. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Edna. The Rev. Joe Webb, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna under the direction of Slavic Funeral Home. Atkins was born July 23, 1952, in Ganado. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Edna. He graduated from Edna High School and attended Wharton Junior College. In addition to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Atkins, Edna, survivors include a sister, Mrs. Betty Sue Kossler, Colleyville; and a brother, John W. Atkins, Angleton.
