Highway Collision Kills 2 Edna Men -
Johnny Alderete - Andy Lee
Ramirez
Edna—Two Edna men, Johnny Alderete, 19, and Andy Lee Ramirez, 18,
and George Herrera Alderete, 25, of Freeport, an uncle of Johnny
Alderete were killed late Thursday night in a two-vehicle
accident about one mile west of Freeport on Highway 36. Frank
Alderete, 29, of Freeport and formerly of Edna and a brother of
Johnny Alderete, was critically injured, but reported in stable
condition in John Sealy hospital in Galveston Friday afternoon.
The case was complicated when a mortician at the Ganado Funeral
Home discovered a bullet wound in the stomach of Ramirez. He
notified Sheriff Harvey Reynolds of Jackson County about the
wound. H. Reynolds then contacted Justice of the Peace Harold
Ammons of Freeport, precinct 7 of Brazoria County, who ordered
an autopsy. The autopsy was held in Victoria Friday, and Judge
Ammons said later that day the report showed the .25 caliber
bullet wound, but that death was due to injuries from the
accident, and he so ruled.
State Trooper Gary Hennigan investigated the highway accident,
assisted by officers of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s office.
Capt. Gene Smith and criminal investigator Matt Wingo of the
Brazoria Sheriff’s department took over the investigation after
the gunshot wound was reported. Capt. Smith told the Advocate
a witness reportedly said the men were driving toward Freeport
about 10 p. m. at high speed, with blinker lights flashing, and
crashed into the rear of a 1973 truck going the same direction
and driven by Lee Manning of Lake Jackson, who was not injured.
The investigators said Frank Alderete was apparently driving the
1978 two-door which was demolished. Officers said they felt it
probable they were taking the wounded man to a hospital, but the
investigation will continue concerning the bullet wound.
Judge Ammons was called to the scene and pronounced Johnny Alderete
and Andy Ramirez dead at the scene, George Alderete was taken to
a Freeport hospital where he died a short time later. He said
Frank Alderete was carried by Life Flight to Herman Hospital in
Houston, and later transferred to John Sealy.
The bodies of Johnny Alderete and Ramirez were moved to the Ganado
and Slavik Funerla Homes, and later both to Slavik’s in Edna.

Home in Palacios.
