CASSELL -
I am trying to figure out when Nicolas Cassell (and maybe John Cassell) left
Pennsylvania in the late 18th century (maybe 1785) for Virginia. They later (by 1800) show up in
Franklin County census+ records but I have not been able to identify which county Nicolas
originally went to and/or when he left Pennsylvania. I found a lot of Nicolas Cassells up
here in PA, and have made notes on them but am not sure any of them are linked to me and the
Franklin County line.
Thank you!

BAKER, BATTLE, BUMPAS, BUMPASS,
BUMPUS -
We are searching for the origins of Richard Baker; born about 1827 in VA, and died Oct 20,
1875 in Whitakers, Edgecombe County, NC. Richard lived and worked in Nash and Edgecombe counties
from around 1849 to the time of his death in 1875.
He married Nancy Bumpas
(Bumpass, Bumpus) 1849 in Edgecombe County. Children: Laura, Mary Francis, John
Henry, Martha Ann, James Carter, Richard Walker.
He served in Co G, 1st NC Artillery during
the civil war, enlisting in Sept 1863.
He, and other family members are buried in the Baker
family cemetery, on Fisher Road just west of Whitakers.
He apparently died intestate and
Jacob Battle was appointed to administer his estate. In 1884, son James Carter
Baker purchased 93 acres in Whitakers from the estate for $675. Later in 1886, Nancy
divided up a 25 acre plot giving each of her six children a plot of a little over 4 acres.
We
are specifically looking for any information about where in VA he might have come from, and who
his parents might have been. All references to his origins that we have found to date, simply
state "born in VA" and this has become our brick wall.
Thank You

Jonathan Dildine was Revolutionary War soldier. He stated in his pension application that
he was born on the South Branch of the Potomac River in VA. He also statet that he was carried to

would like to know if there are any records of any DILDINEs in the VA/WV area in the 1700s
or 1800s? He may be the grandson of Johannn Hermannus DILDINE whose will in NJ was written
in 1769. In Hermannus's will he was missing a son named Herman. Jonatha's father was a Herman
DILDINe of NC/SC who fought for the British and was captured in the Snow Campaign and
taken prisoner to Charles Town. He was later pardoned I believe. Going from NJ to the Carolinas
would have taken them down the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road which started in NJ and ended in GA.
It was basically the Cherokee Indian trail. Jonathan is my ggggg-grandfather.

AKIN, DAVIS, EVANS, PROBY, RANSOM, TERRY -
Researching half-brothers Peter R. Proby and Keeble Terry (b. 1799), who are the
sons of Dorothy Ransom Proby Terry. Peter's father was James Proby
and Keeble's father was Daniel Terry, son of Moses Terry, son of Daniel
Terry and Christain Evans. This is documented in a lawsuit started in 1819 Halifax
Co VA. This info found by Margie Brown of Oakton VA. "Family tales" of Keeble being part Cherokee
too are now proven false BUT his wife Rebecca is still Cherokee, as the Cherokee connection came
from the mouth of Julia H. Terry ...their grandaughter...to my mother back in the 1930's.
1823 Halifax Co VA court records shows: Keeble Terry, John Terry, Thomas
Terry (all brothers) Lucy R. Terry dau. of deceased brother Daniel Terry and
siblings Peter R. Proby, James Proby, Nancy B. Proby.
My Julia H.
Terry is the dau. of Kibble & Rebecca Terry's dau. Lucy B. Terry age 15 b.
abt 1845 d. 1861-1865. Biological father for my Julia H. Terry is Ludwell George
Davis b. 1844 d. 1937 in Ark. Ludwell's sister Belinda (Davis) <Akin is the
"Indian" that raised her niece Julia H. Terry. Reference to Julia's "Indian" mother,
turns? out to be the woman that raised her is who she called mother. The Davis line out of
SC is the Cherokee in the family.

FOWLER, JANUARY, YOUNG -
I have been trying to find the lineage of an ancestor in 1810 KY by the name of John
Fowler who was married on March 8, 1809 to Ann Marie January in Jessamine Co., KY. He may
have been a nephew of the famous Capt. John Fowler from Lexington, Fayette, KY, but I
don't know when he was born or where, whether in VA or KY. I am suspecting that he was born in
the 1780s sometime, so I suspect that it was in VA but don't know if his father's name was
Benjamin or William Fowler (he named his first child William A. Fowler) there in
Jessamine Co., KY and that son later moves to Perry Township, Clinton, Indiana where he dies in
1873). John Fowler is deceased after serving (I think) in the 1812 war and is dead by 1814
I believe. Ann Marie January-Fowler is auctioning off their land and possesions in the
newspaper there with two young children and then re-marries in Sept. 1816 to a William
Young, and has more children I believe by him. John just appears and then disappears after
a short time of being married to her, so if anyone has any information of how to find who he's
related to and/or where to find this obscure "John Fowler", I would appreciate your input! I've
got him listed in the Jessamine County, KY 1810 census, but that is about all I have on him.

ROUSE -
I and other Rouse researchers have failed to link our TX Rouses to our VA
Rouses over the past 25 years. For us, the key figure is one James M. (Mattison?)
ROUSE 1832-1912, who was a VA native but left VA c1850 (age 18), heading for Texas. We
have found him documented in 1850 in MS, then in 1855 in TX. He left descendants no records about
his ancestors, so the going has been rough.

BEISEL, BENTON, POISAL, SHOTWELL, STEWART, WILLIAMS -
I have a couple of surnames I only know were born in VA. First is William N. Stewart, born
in Berkeley Co, now WV, then VA about 1793 to William Stewart and Catherine Poisal.
Catherine was the daughter of Adam and Catherine Poisal. The Poisals were named
Beisel in Germany but were known as Poisals in America. He shows up in Mason County
KY in 1801, apprenticed to Samuel Stevens. In 1818 he marries Abigail Shotwell there.
#2 is George L. Williams, born 6-22-1800 in Va. He shows up in Scott KY in 1833, where
he marries Elizabeth Benton. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
