BOOTHE, DOLD, HAMAN, HARMAN, HARMON, LAWRENCE,
MOSES, TAYLOR, TROWBRIDGE -
I am relatively new to genealogy and family history and have run into a snag in establishing the
relationship between my g-gf, Augustus V. Lawrence, born in Montgomery Co, 15 July 1849,
and his purported grandfather, William Lawrence, born ca 1764 in Duchess Co, NY, died in
Rockcastle, KY ca 1847.
The Death Certificate for Augusts V. Lawrence from Adams Co,
IL, states that his father was "John W. Lawrence." That was also the name Augustus gave
his first-born son, which appears to follow naming conventions of the day.
The 1850 Federal
census, which shows Augustus V. Lawrence as 1-year-old, gives his mother "Mary
Lawrence" as head of household. At that time, they lived in the "57th District" of Roanoke
County. I do not know what area that represented, but am aware that Roanoke County was split-off
from Montgomery Co. In later years, Augustus, who became a shoemaker, lived in McDonald's Mill,
Montgomery Co. That is where his three children John W., Lena L., and Benjamin Franklin (my gf)
were born.
Different sources show Mary Lawrence's maiden name as Haman (or
possibly, Harman, Harmon), or Dold. She may also have been realted to a
family named "Trowbridge."
I visited Southwest Virginia in June, and discovered a
book, "The Descendants of Elder John Lawrence of Southwest Virginia and New England," by
Ora Belle McColman. This source claims that William Lawrence was the son of Elder John
Lawrence, who moved to Montgomery Co, following the Revolutionary War. Elder John, his
family, and several parishioners, set up the Meadow Creek Primitive Baptist Church, near what is
now Radford Hospital.
In approximately 1811, Elder John's son, William, his wife Sally (or
Sarah) Boothe, and their four (younger) children, moved-on to what became Rockcastle Co,
KY. Family recollections, and books on the Lawrence's of Kentucky, make no mention of
William having had living children other than the ones he took with him to Kentucky.
What I
am seeking to establish is the assertion in the Elder John book, that three of William's
older sons, including John, possibly born ca 1785, remained in Southwest Virginia when the rest
of the family migrated to KY. From the birth date of John W. Lawrence's son, Augustus V.,
and the date of the 1850 census, my best guess is that he died sometime between Oct. 1848 and
Aug. 1850.
There is some indication that John and Mary Lawrence lived for a time in
Augusta County, VA. They had at least three children some years before Augustus was born.
Their three older children Isabella, born ca 1837, William F., born ca 1838, and Jacob H., born
ca 1840.
Isabella married a neighbor boy named Joseph Taylor, and they had two
daughters. Since Isabella and daughters are living with Mary Lawrence in the 1870 census,
and Joseph cannot be found, I wonder whether he was killed in the Civil War?
It is documented
that Jacob H. Lawrence, who was with Company B. of the 4th Virginai Infantry, lost a leg
at Mine Run on November 27, 1863. He survived the war, married Sarah Moses, and had a
child (daughter?), "A. R." Apparently Jacob H. Lawrence died prior to the 1880 census.
Recent information suggests that Jacob and Augustus' older brother, William, died at Gettysburg.
In any case, it is reasonably clear that Mary Lawrence lost two sons as a result of the
Civil War.
If there are some Civil War experts out there, I would be very interested in
knowing more about what became of Joseph Taylor, and William F. Lawrence.

KIRK -
I am looking for information on a John Kirk who moved to VA near the time of the American
Rev. He moved from Delaware County located in S.E. PA. He had a brother, Benjamin, who remained
in Delaware Co. S.E. PA. The 2 brother's father was Philip Kirk who is reported to be have
been a wealthy English gentleman who purchased a very large tract of land from, I believe, one of
Wm. Penn's sons. The tract of land today is the town of Media + more land to the west. The only
info I have about John is that "he moved to VA, prospered and raised a large family." I am
related to the Benjamin side and curious about the John K. family side??
Not sure if this
will help but it is reported that the father, Philip Kirk, was an ardent supporter of the
colonies during the Rev. War and had a reward placed on Philip's capture by the English crown. He
escaped a number of capture attempts because of secure places to hide. I am guessing that John
Kirk moved to VA sometime between the mid to later part of the 1700's. Any help is greatly
appreciated. THANKS!!!

DAVIS -
Interested in contacting anyone researching the DAVIS surname from VA. I have information
that indicates my gg grandfather, John Davis, was from Henry Co., VA. This was sent to me
recently and I have not confirmed that. John was born about 1784 (VA?) and died in Madison Co.,
MS around 1833. This has not been verified either. I do not know who his spouse was. Some of his
issue were; George Washington, Patrick, Mary, John Davis, Jr., and others. The last child was
born in VA around 1815. This means the family moved to MS after 1815 and before 1833 and resided
in Madison and Rankin Counties. Thanks for any response.
