Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in
Goodwill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Born in Floyd Co., Va., he was a Deacon and former Assistant Clerk of
Goodwill Primitive Baptist Church and retired from Fieldcrest Mills Inc.
Survivors are wife, Lillie Thomas of Eden; one son, Joseph Edison Thomas of
Fieldale, Va.; two daughters, Shirley T. Martin of Narrows, Va., Frances T.
Perdue of Patrick Springs, Va.; two brothers, Marvin Thomas and Wilson
Thomas, both of Floyd, Va.; one sister, Bessie T. Martin of Floyd, Va.; ten
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Viola T. Walker; grandson, Jerry
Thomas; two brothers, Fitzhugh Thomas, Archie Thomas; two sisters, Bertha
Compton and Lakie Scurghs.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday evening at Fair Funeral
Home.

WILEY THOMAS was the
son of Nancy Thomas Durham (abt. 1785-Unknown). Nancy Thomas married
Benjamin Durham (1778-Unknown), on December 15, 1831 in Mecklenburg County,
Virginia, with the marriage bond being delivered on December 2, 1831.
Security was given by Luke Burks, and the minister was Rev. John Wesley
Childs (1801-1850).1 According to his 1880 US Census report,
Wiley Thomas was born in North Carolina. His 1860 marriage certificate,
however, states that he was born in Mecklenburg, Virginia. I suspect North
Carolina is correct due to Benjamin Durham's roots there. Wiley Thomas
married his first wife, Martha Lester/Luster Thomas (1818-1858), say around
1840. He married his second wife, Martha "Annie" Guy Thomas (abt.
1832-Unknown) on October 18, 1860 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The
ceremony took place in the "M. E. Church" [Methodist Episcopal
Church].
Wiley Thomas was a
“free colored person”, as well as his mother, both of his wives, and all of
his children.
Around 1866, after the Civil War, Wiley Thomas pulled up roots from
Brunswick County in the Piedmont region of Virginia and arrived in Floyd
County in the foothills of Southwestern Virginia to seek a better life for
himself and his large family.2 By 1870 he had moved next door to
Montgomery County, VA. By 1880 his family had swelled to include his white
mother-in-law, Sally Guy (abt. 1800-Unknown), and the family was once again
in Floyd County. One can only speculate as to how the Thomases were
received by the local population, but one thing is certain, Wiley Thomas'
eldest daughter, Mary Thomas, soon caught the eye of a former slave named
Joseph Green Smith (1849-Unknown) who lived in nearby Blacksburg. The two
married on July 29, 1869 in Montgomery County, Virginia. Joseph Green Smith
was a blacksmith and he quickly obtained employment with Samuel Dulaney
(1750-1812) of Floyd County, Virginia. And so, the Smith family soon
followed Wiley Thomas into Floyd County, VA.
Wiley Thomas is
either buried here or in the Smith-Thomas Burial Ground somewhere on their
old homestead in Floyd County, Virginia.
