1895 Obituary Letter:

Mr. John A. and Mrs. Lydia B. Russell

It is with a sad heart, but by the help of the Lord I will try to write the obituaries of my dear father and mother.  My father, John A. Russell, was born the 19th day of July 1825 and departed this life May 1st 1895.  He married to Lydia B. Shortt in 1860 and of which union there were born unto them 7 children, 3 boys and 4 girls, all of whom survive them.  He professed a hope in Christ some ten or fifteen year before his death and joined the church at West Fork about three years before his decease.  He was a good neighbor, a good citizen, and a kind father and was respected by all.  He attended his church meetings regularly and loved his brethren in Christ.  He was sick just one week with pneumonia which he bore patiently. He said he would not get well.  He was preaching for two days and nights before he died and said he ought to have been preaching long ago.  He called Elder Hugh D. Weeks' name many times during his sickness and talked all about the Baptist.  He seemed to be perfectly resigned to God's will.

I was sitting on his bedside the night before he died and he said, "Have they all gone and left me to die alone?"  I replied, "No, I am with you."  He then looked at me and said, "its alright, Jesus is with me and I'm not afraid to die."  He said he wanted Elder P.G. Lester to preach his funeral.  He talked to the last and fell asleep in Jesus just as the sun was setting.

My mother, Lydia B. Russell was born September 17, 1835, and died of pneumonia the 6th day of May, 1895.  She was a good mother and kind to all, always helping the needy when it was in her power to do so.  She was not a member of the church but was a firm believer in the Primitive Baptist.  She professed a hope in Christ only a few days before her death.  She said she was going home to heaven and called her children around her bedside and asked them to sing "The Unclouded Day."  She then said, "how sweet it will be when I awake in that morn where no clouds ever come."  She then sang:  "Come we that love the Lord and let our joys be known; Join in a song with sweet accord, and thus surround the throne."

She said she hated to leave her children; but told them not to greive after them (herself and their father) for we are going to that beautiful home where sorrows never come.  She said Jesus would meet her first and her husband next.  She also desired Elder P.G. Lester to preach her funeral.  She was calm and conscious until the last and like her husband she passed away in a peaceful sleep at sundown.  Oh sad it is to sit by the bedside and see our loved ones died, but we should be resigned to God's will.  "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord."

Their daughter,

Lydia Russell
