Born and died in Virginia, mostly in Richmond. Benton was deaf (and mute). A carpenter, he taught carpentry at the Deaf and Blind School in Spartanburg, SC for several years. He was married to Sarah Wallace Mitchell and was later divorced (assumed, since we could never find the paperwork). They had two children William Mangrum and Shirley Mangrum. He was very sweet and soft-spoken. Taught his grand-daughter a little sign-language and how to read lips.

Mangrum; three sisters, Ruth Bennett, Eva DeHart, and Annie Pilson; and one half-brother, James Edward Morrison. She was a longtime member of Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are one daughter, Norma Lee Mangrum; one son, John Roger Mangrum; two grandsons; two half-brothers, Amos Morrison and Claude Morrison; and two half-sisters, Nancy Martin and Marie Brink. Mr. Bobby J. Mangrum, age 85, of Stuart passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the VA Hospital in Salem.

He was born in Patrick County on September 22, 1930 to the late Dolphus Calvin Mangrum and Pearl Grace DeHart Mangrum.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Mangrum was preceded in death by three brothers, J.B., Ralph and Garland Mangrum; and one sister, Sue Leigh Mangrum.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and had retired as a mechanic from J.P. Stevens.

Mr. Mangrum is survived by his wife of 60 years, Winifred Haynes Mangrum of the home; three sons, Bobby W. Mangrum and wife, Amy of Woolwine, Billy Joe Mangrum of Collinsville, Danny Ray Mangrum and wife, Kim of Bassett; three grandchildren, Audrey M. Jones, James Mangrum, Katelyn Grace Mangrum; one step-grandson, Austin Martin; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Mae Jones and Noah Anthony Jones; and one sister, Mabel Wood of Franklin Springs, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held Friday June 3, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Churchildren with Brother Danny Gilley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until time of the service at the church.
