Pembroke; one great-granddaughter and husband, Donna and Charles Laurens,
Virginia Beach; three great-grandsons, Dwayne Thompson, Floyd, Jason Hall
and Lorne Bowman, both of Pembroke; three great-great-grandchildren,
Chelsea, Charlie and Chandler Laurens, all of Virginia Beach; two sisters,
Irene Allen and Alma Fralin, both of Copper Hill;
one aunt, Cassie Fralin, Bent Mountain and
several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Thursday, November 15,
2001 at 1 p.m. at the Gardner Funeral Home with the Rev. Hale Terry

Allen of Copper Hill, Woodrow Allen of Wirtz, Alton L. Allen of Copper Hill

six great-great-grandchildren; a special grandson, Gary W. Martin; a
special friend, Mazel Walters; one sister, Dorothy Whitehead of Copper

Sally P. Richards, 63, of Roanoke, went home to be
with the Lord on Thursday, January 24, 2013. She was preceded in death by
her parents, Nathan L. Richards and Molly Wray Richards, son, Brian Jeffrey
Allen, brother, Pete Richards, and sister, Shirley Guthrie. She was a
longtime volunteer and employee of the Salvation Army. Sally was completely
devoted to her children and grandchildren. She was known to be a strong,
brave, and courageous woman with a heart of gold.
Surviving are her children, William (Billy) Davis,
of Roanoke, Mike Davis, of Pleasant Garden, N.C., Sandy Lynn Allen, of
Moneta, Dalton Michael Richards and Sally Jean Allen, both of Roanoke;
grandchildren, Coby Mitchell Allen, Kara Christine LaPradd, Brandon Davis,
Nathaniel, Abigale, Michelle, Angeley and Jayden Allen; brothers, Butch
Richards and Nelson Richards both of Roanoke; sister, Ednar Brumfield of
Roanoke.
Flowers will be appreciated, or memorials may be
made to the Salvation Army, 724 Dale Avenue S.E., Roanoke, VA 24013
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday,
January 28, 2013, at the Salvation Army by Captain Amy Argot. Interment will follow in Shady Grove Baptist Church

Gertrude Trail, Martinsville; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be Monday November 3, 1997 at 11 a.m. at Gardner
Funeral Home with The Rev. Buckey Handy officiating.
Interment in Canaday Cemetery. Friends may call

Jay Dee Allen of Copper Hill, VA. completed his
earthly tour on August 1st. at Skyline Manor Nursing Home in Floyd, VA., with
several family members bidding him "Farewell". It began on
December 5, 1938 when a bouncing baby boy brought joy to his parents,
Charlie and Mary Allen, now deceased. He was also preceded in death by an
older sister, Ruth Collins, and a dear friend, Joey Rose.
Lingering here to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 48 years,
Shirley Allen, his special needs sister-in-law of the home, Ada Lee Hill,
whom Jay Dee helped care for, brother-in –law, Sam Collins, special sister
and brother-in-law, Annie and Robert Martin, Copper Hill, VA., brothers,
Woody Allen, Franklin County, VA., Dee and Lee Allen of Copper Hill, VA.,
his aunt, Dorothy Whitehead, a very caring and supportive nephew, Gary
Wayne Martin, his brother-in-law, Wilford Hill, friends, Betty Conner and
Bonnie Conner, several close friends in Clintwood, VA.; numerous nieces,
nephews, cousins, family friends and neighbors.
Jay Dee was a hard worker. He spent many years at and retired from Halmode Apparel. He attended Copper Hill United
Methodist Church and was a loving husband, brother and uncle. He loved
being outside among God's creations. He also loved hunting, fishing and
hunting ginseng, and resting under the "Big Old Shade Tree".
Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. at 2:00 P.M.
Sunday, August 4, 2013. Pastor Darren Landon of Copper Hill United
Methodist Church will officiate. His earthly body will rest with family and
friends at Cannaday Cemetery, Floyd County.

Virgel Harmon Allen,77, of Floyd, passed away on
Thursday, August 3, 2017. Virgel's greatest passion was his grandchildren.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, his community as
an elected official and the youth of Floyd County in recreational sports.
Virgel was proceeded in death by his parents, Tannie and Nola (Atkins)
Allen.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Whitlock-Allen; his
brothers, James Allen and Lynwood (Brenda) Allen; his children, Scott (Sheilia) Allen, Michele (Randy) Akers; stepchildren,
Lawrence (Pat) Whitlock, Monica (Kevin) Grubb; six grandchildren, Dillon
Harris, Amber Harris, Garrett Whitlock, Jesse Whitlock, Kearsten
Grubb, and Collin Grubb; and a very special lady, Eleanor
"Granny" Whitlock; many nieces; nephews; cousins; and special
friends. A special thanks to Emily, Nicole, Anitra, Ashley, Angela and
everyone at Carilion Clinic Family Medicine for taking such good care of
him.
A graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September
24, 2017 at Cannaday Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Brown officiating.

Boyd, age 56, departed this earthly life Feb. 24, 2016. Passed down by his
father Glendon, Ricky was the 3rd generation wood worker of Boyd’s
Woodcrafts. Ricky has also passed down this woodworking tradition down to
his son Arthur.
Ricky is
survived by his wife of 32 years Alicia, Children, Amy Boyd of Riner, Lori
Phillips and son-in-law Bradley of Christiansburg, and Son Arthur Boyd of
Floyd. Precious survivors are Grandsons, Aiden Boyd, and Jonathan Phillips
who call him Pa. Other survivors include his parents Glendon and Virginia
Boyd, Sister, Patricia Spangler, Brother-in-Law David Spangler, Niece,
Julie Harris and husband Adam, Great nephew and niece, Tyler Harris, and Elayn a Harris, all of Floyd, along with several Aunts,
Uncles, and Cousins.
Funeral service
will be held Sunday Feb. 28th at 2PM at Gardner funeral home chapel with
Rev. Richard Burnette Jr officiating. Interment will follow in Cannaday
Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 PM Saturday Feb. 27th where the family

Percy W.
Brown, Sr., was called to eternal rest on Sunday, October 11, 2015, in his
home surrounded by his loving family. His life began on October 24, 1933,
the son of the late Ellen P. and James W. Brown, of James City County,
Virginia. He retired after many years of service from Camp Peary and the
Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Donzella Brown and a son,
David Brown. He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his wife, Audrey
H. Brown; his daughter, Tammy Shaw (Apollos); his sons, Percy Brown, Jr.
(Mary), Randy Brown (Gwendolen) and Quinton Brown (Gayle); his fourteen
grandchildren; his twenty-two great-grandchildren; and other loving
relatives and many caring friends.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2015, in
Whiting’s Chapel with Dr. Robert A. Whitehead officiating. Interment will
follow in the Cannaday Family Cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at
the funeral home by 12:45 p.m. on Friday. Mr. Brown may be viewed on
Thursday from 5 to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Alma Antico Fralin, 100, of Floyd, Va., departed this life on Sunday,
May 3, 2009. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She
was born on April 25, 1909, to Robert and Olive Turner Fralin
in Floyd County. She was predeceased by her parents and six siblings,
brothers, Tyler and Dick Fralin; and sisters,
Sylvia Allen, Beulah Nichols, Myrtle Akers and Irene Allen. She is survived
by two nephews, Robert Allen and wife, Roma Lee, and Curtis Allen; and four
nieces, Lela Peters, Ada Lee Williams and husband, Harmon, Betty Smith, and
Patricia Cox and husband, Rodney. Alma went to work for American Viscose in
1927 in Roanoke and worked there until the plant closed. In 1954 she took a
job as a nanny to the family of Katherine Kerr in Los Angeles and was with
the family until her retirement in 1989. At retirement she came to Copper
Hill to live with her sister, Irene Allen. In her declining years she has
been kept comfortable at Skyline Manor Nursing and Rehab by Dr. Susan
Osbourne and the compassionate staff. Alma's memory will be cherished for
her generosity, dignity and graciousness. On Sunday, April 26, 2009, Alma's
nephews and nieces honored her with a 100th birthday party, celebrating
this special birthday and sharing memories of her 100 years. A memorial
service will be held 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Stonewall Church of
the Brethren with the Rev. Elbert L. Naff officiating. Visitation will be
held on Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to Cannaday Cemetery, c/o Ada Lee Williams, 932 Smartview Road, S.E., Floyd, Va. 24091, 540-745-3525.

was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Nichols Gillespie; son,
Russell Wavell Gillespie. Survived by sons and daughters-In-law, Cecil and
Ann Gillespie, Roanoke, Va., Lloyd and Anna Gillespie, Fortville, Ind.,
Gene and Lillian Gillespie, Floyd, Va.; six grandsons, nine granddaughters,
numerous great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Monday April 18, 2005 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Joe McCoy
officiating, interment to follow at Cannady Cemetery with Military Rites by
Floyd V.F.W. #7854 and American Legion Post #127. Family will receive
friends at Maberry Funeral Home on Sunday April 17, 2005 from 6 to 8 p.m.

skilled care unit at Friendship Manor for their excellent care while Ernest

Gillespie and Candy Nichols, his siblings Caitlin and Tanner, his niece
Amelia, his best friend Taylor Jo Thompson, his daughter Layla, his uncle
Ernie and Teresa, his cousins Conner, Bradley and Brandon, and his Joyce
Racing family.
Visitation will be held beginning at 3pm on October 12, 2020 at Gardner

Brown Radford Sr. (99), born and raised in Floyd County, Virginia on August
14,1922 went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 4,2022. He was
predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Verna Trail Radford; parents, George
Riley and Sarah Elizabeth (Radford) Radford; four brothers, Wilson,
Swanson, Willard (Bill) and Moyer (Boss); two sisters, Leila Underwood and
Lena Trail. He was also predeceased by a very dear grandson, Mark Lee
Radford.
NEW CASTLE,
Va. Verna Trail Radford, 89, was born on July 8, 1927, formerly of Floyd,
went home to be with the Lord on March 21, 2017. She was preceded in death
by her parents, William Harvey and Laura Turner Trail; eight sisters, five
brothers; and a very dear grandson, Mark Lee Radford. She leaves behind to
cherish her memories, the love of her life for 70 years, the Rev. Alvin B.
Radford Sr. She also leaves behind one daughter, Kitty (Dennis) Mayo; one
son, Alvin Jr. (Virginia) Radford; and five grandsons, Dean (Evelyn)
Paxton, Barry (Angie) Radford, Joey (Pam) Mayo, William (Andrea) Radford,
and James (Emily) Radford, all whom she loved very dearly. She is also
survived by eight great grandchildren, Madison, Shaleigh, Sierra, Noah,
Kaitlyn, Emaleigh, Olivia, and Elly; three great-great grandchildren,
Hayden, Maya, Mia; one sister, Neva Ratliff, and many nieces, nephews,
step-great grandchildren, step great-great grandchildren, two
sisters-in-law and many friends. Verna spent her life serving her Lord and
loving and taking care of her family. She was a pastor's wife for over
fifty years and was always willing to serve along beside her husband in
whatever capacity she was needed. A funeral service was conducted on
Saturday, March 25, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home 202 E. Oxford
St. Floyd, with the Reverend Murray Agee and the Reverend Leon Wood
officiating. Interment followed at Cannaday Cemetery in Floyd. Friends
called after 5 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017, at Gardner Funeral Home, where
the family was from 5 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests

George Abram
Sutphin, 82, of Floyd, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Saturday,
November 1, 2014.
George was a
longtime employee of Herzog Construction where he helped build multiple
railroad transit systems across the United States including the Metrolink
Mass Transit System in Los Angeles, Calif.
He loved life
and his family and was always willing to help anyone he encountered. He
will be greatly missed on this earth by his family but is finally at rest
and healthy and whole with his Father in Heaven.
He is
survived by his wife, Sylvia Sutphin; his daughter, Vanessa Mays of Christiansburg,
Va.; his son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Nacol
Sutphin of Roanoke, Va. Also surviving are grandchildren, Joli Huyhn and husband, Thai Huyhn, of Christiansburg, Va., Kim Wade of Narrows,
Va.; and great-grandchildren, Emma King and Noah Sutphin. He has one
surviving brother, Wilton Sutphin of Floyd.
Funeral
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at
Gardner Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Roy Turpin officiating.
Interment will follow in the Cannaday Cemetery on River Ridge Road, Floyd,
VA. Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2014at Gardner
Funeral Home where the family will be from 4to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers,
the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Pleasant Valley
Church of the Brethren, 3883 Alum Ridge Road, N.W., Floyd, VA 24091, or the
Floyd County Humane Society, P.O. Box 862, Floyd, VA 24091. Condolences to

being served by Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd.
Sylvia Goad
Sutphin 88 of Floyd, Va. left for her journey to heaven on Saturday,
February 10, 2018 after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years George Sutphin.
She was the proud mother of her two children, her daughter Vanessa Sutphin
Mays of Christiansburg, Va., and son Kenneth Sutphin and wife Nacol of Roanoke, Va. Three grandchildren, Kimberly
Wade, Joli Wade Huynh and husband Thai, Noah
Sutphin, and great granddaughter Emma King.
She was the best mother anyone could ever ask for. She was loved and will
be missed immensely. A sincere thank you goes to the nurses and staff of
English Meadows Nursing Home. A special thank you goes to my favorite
Medi-Home and Hospice nurses Robin, Kim and Wendy. In lieu of flowers
donations may be made to the Floyd County Rescue Squad. Thank you to
Gardner Funeral Home who has always provided us with excellent service.
A graveside memorial service will be held at the Cannaday Cemetery at

Gillespie Turner Fulp, 73, of Bassett, died
Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born Oct. 22, 1935, in Franklin County to Kemper Lee
Gillespie and Dillie Whorley Gillespie. In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel
Belton "Junior" Fulp; and a son, Hoover
Lee Turner.
She was a member of Collinsville Pentecostal Holiness Church, and
she had worked at Bassett-Walker, the Bassett Chair plant and as a private
duty nurse.
Surviving are a son, John Wade Fulp of
Bassett; and a granddaughter.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Collins-McKee-Stone
Funeral Home in Bassett with Dr. Dan Woods officiating. Burial will be in
Henry Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the
funeral home.

WAGNER,
Curtis Malcolm, 65, of 218 Riverview St., Rocky Mount, died Monday, March
14, 1994, at the local hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents,
Horace J. and Ocie A. Wagner. Surviving are three sisters and one
brother-in-law, Alpha Hale, Rocky Mount, Esther Lynch, Bassett, Voleria and Bill Cundiff, Rocky Mount; three brothers
and sisters-in-law, Albert and Pauline Wagner, Bassett, James and Thelma
Wagner, Charles and Nancy Wagner all of Rocky Mount; two special nephews,
Jeff Wagner and Gerald Wagner both of Rocky Mount; five addition nephews
and five nieces. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, 11 a.m. in
Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James C. Hensley and the Rev. Jeff Wade
officiating. Interment will follow in the Cannaday Family Cemetery, Floyd
Co. Friends may call after noon Wednesday, with the family receiving
friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 342 S. Main Street,
Rocky Mount.

Pauline Wagoner, 83, of Bassett, died Friday, October 1, 2021 at her
home. She was born in Franklin County, Virginia on January 12, 1938
to the late Junus Wade and Mattie Hodges
Wade. She was also preceded in death a grandson, Ronnie Lee Wagoner;
brothers, Claude Wade, Everette Wade, Benny Wade, Roy Wade, Alonzo Wade and
sisters, Betty Brogan, Virginia Truman, Lorene Compton and Della Stump.
She
is survived by her husband of 66 years, Albert J. Wagoner; sons, Ronnie
Wagoner (Bonnie), Carry Wagoner (Peggy), David Wagoner; daughters, Sandra
Wagoner, Carolyn Wagoner, Donna Jean Sessor; grandchildren, Michael S.
Wagoner, Tina Clark, Nicole “Nikki” Kendrick, Jessica Hodges; great
grandchildren, Macy, Landon, Izabella, Jack, Aaron and Julia; brother,
Curtis Wade.
The
family will receive friends Tuesday, October 5, 2021 from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
in the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel with the funeral to follow at 2:00 PM
with Bishop Dwayne Pruitt officiating. Burial will follow in the Cannaday’s Family Cemetery.
Due
to the governor’s requirements for Covid-19, a face covering is
recommended, and social distancing is to be observed when visiting at the
funeral home.
