She was born near Marlington, W.Va. and was the daughter of William E. and Lena Williams Poage.

She was retired from Denmar State Hospital in Hillsboro, W.Va. and was preceded in death by her husband, Audley M. Thomas of Greenville, W.Va.; two sisters, Zell Lewis of Hillsboro, W.Va. and Alea Poage of Edray, W.Va.; brothers, Van Poage of Toledo, Ohio and Col. (Ret.) Oren Poage of Austin, Texas.

Her surviving family include a son and daughter-in-law, William Marshall and Candyth R. Thomas of Salem; brothers, Warren Poage of State College, Pa., Jack Poage of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Jewel Hamilton of Ashland, Ky., Faith "Sally" Woodrum of Pompano Beach, Fla.; granddaughters, Sandra Amos of Roanoke, Karen Dunlap of Blacksburg; and four great-grandchildren.

Private graveside service will be held in the Swope Cemetery in Monroe County, W.Va. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Kazim Shrine, 628 W. Campbell Ave., Roanoke, Va. 24016 or a favorite charity. Arrangements by John M. Oakey & Son in Salem, 389-5441.

Mark Marion Hill Jr., born in Frankford, West Virginia, to Mark Marion Hill, Sr. and Meta "Pete" Hill, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010, in Rockledge, Florida, at the age of 89. He was the paternal grandson of Levi Chaney Hill and Jenny Elizabeth (Myers) Hill of Frankford, Greenbrier County, West Virginia.

Mr. Hill graduated from high school in West Virginia and attended Marshall College. He worked at the Radford Armory during WWII. He married Irene Thomas and they lived in Lewisburg, West Virginia, where Mark made a living as a paint contractor and Irene taught school. They moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1954 where Mark worked for Sherwin Williams. They moved one more time to Cocoa, Florida, in 1961, so that Mark could manage the Sherwin Williams store. After his retirement, Mark and Irene split their time between West Virginia and Florida before finally settling in Cocoa year round.

Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Kay Hill, and his beloved wife Irene. Mr. Hill was survived by his son, Stephen (and wife Lynne) of Cocoa; a cousin, Dale Hill (and wife Ruby) of Green Bank, West Virginia; brother-in-law, Richard Thomas (and wife Lilly) of Lindside, West Virginia; sisters-in-law, Mona (Lively) Thomas of Titusville, Florida; Lena Thomas of Princeton, West Virginia; Mary Turner (and husband David) of Princeton, West Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greenville United Methodist Church, Greenville, West Virginia 24945 or to Vitas Hospice Foundation, 4450 West Eau Gallie Boulevard, Suite 250, Melbourne, FL 32934. PRINCETON — Mary Thomas Holroyd Turner of 146 Garden Oaks in Princeton died Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born in Greenville, W.Va. she was the daughter of the late, Cany Thomas and Minnie Ellison Thomas.

Mary graduated from Peterstown High School, attended Concord College, and was a graduate of the Greenbrier Valley Hospital School of Nursing. She was a retired Registered Nurse and formerly served as Nursing Supervisor at Princeton Memorial Hospital for fifteen years. She was also in charge of the nursing program with the Red Cross for several years. Mary was instrumental in the development of the Princeton Health & Fitness Center and Mercer County Hospice services. She was Past President of the Southern West Virginia Nurses Association, Past President of the Nurses Organization of the Princeton Red Cross, and Past President of the Mercer County Medical Auxiliary. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Princeton. Mary and her husband (the late Dr. Frank J. Holroyd) had financially assisted over thirty five students entering the medical field.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Frank J. Holroyd; five brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include her second husband, David W. Turner of Princeton; three stepsons, Frederick F. Holroyd II and wife, Sarah of Charleston, W.Va., Robert E. Holroyd of Princeton, and Eric David Turner of San Diego, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Diana Holroyd of Reston, Va.; one brother, Richard L. Thomas and wife, Lilly of Lindside, W.Va.; several nieces and nephews including Danny Thomas and wife, Mary Ann of Princeton; and special friends, Trena, Gary, and R.J. Linkous.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday (today), February 21, 2014 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Burial will follow at the Athens Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour Friday (today).

LINDSIDE  Richard Lee Thomas, 86, of Lindside, WV, passed away, Saturday, March 8, 2014, at the Springfield Center, Lindside, WV. Born September 5, 1927, at Greenville, WV he was the son of the late L. Cany and Minnie Ellison Thomas.

Richard had retired from USPS as a postal carrier. He was an avid fisherman, loved to travel and farm and was a member of the Lindside United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mary Beth Walker, and eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Lilly Meadows Thomas, one son, Jim Thomas and wife Sue of Lindside, WV, and one daughter, Judy Thomas Rice of Lindside, WV, three grandchildren, Annie Walker, Wes Thomas and wife Regina and Bret Thomas and wife Kelly, three great grandchildren, Montana Galvan, Alydia Thomas and Cole Thomas.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, March 10, 2014 at the Lindside United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brent Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Swope Cemetery, Lindside, WV. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM, Noon until time of the service Monday at the church.

Bartie Alice Thomas Rudy,85, of Rt. 2, Max Meadows, the Poplar Camp Community, died Wednesday, Feb. 1,1995 in the Wythe County Community Hospital following a short illness.

Born in Pulaski County on July 25, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Kyle and Flora Deck Thomas. She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church for 65 years where she served as Sunday school teacher; chairperson of the Membership Committee; a member of the church board and president of the U.M.W. circle. She was preceded in death by a son, William Thomas Rudy.

Surviving are her husband, William Ralph Rudy of Poplar Camp; a daughter, Martha R. Neese of Poplar Camp; a son, Mahlon Kyle Rudy of Richmond; four sisters, Pearl Templeton of Norfolk, Bernice Ogle of Pearlsburg, Nancy Reed and Mary Jean Smythers, both of Brandon, Fla.; five grandchildren and five, greatgrandchildren.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Earnest Chinault and the Rev. Dr. William S. Rodgers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bernice Thomas Ogle, of Pearisburg, Va., and formerly of Peterstown, W.Va., wife of the late Joseph Herman Ogle, departed this life on Monday, November 8, 2010, at Riverview Nursing Home, Rich Creek, Va.

She was born on February 5, 1920, to Eura Radford Thomas and Kiley Mitchell Thomas in Pulaski County.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were daughters, Gail Robinson, of Branford, Conn., and Beverly Harvey, of Peterstown, W.Va.; a son-in-law, Ronald Worrell; a grandson, Blair Ogle; several sisters; and a brother.

Surviving are daughters, Glenda Worrell, of Peterstown, W.Va., Carol and Bob Lilly, of Narrows, Va., Pam Turner, of Salem, Va., and Marguerite and Billy Good, of Pearisburg, Va.; and sons, Joseph Ogle Jr., Sun City Ctr., Fla., Tommy Ogle, of Newport, N.C., and Gene and Kathy Ogle, of Roanoke, Va.; grandchildren, Douglas Good, Makayla Harvey, Tammy Pitzer, Melissa Harvey, Kristina Ader, Mike Ogle, Marc Turner, Sara Turner, Graham Ogle, Adam Ogle, Todd Ogle, Jennifer Nichols, Terri Lowe, Bobby Lilly, Andy Robinson, Greg Robinson, Richard Robinson Jr., Kyle Worrell, and Keith Worrell; 19 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, Richard Robinson and Roger Turner; brothers-in-law, Roy Smythers and John Read; and several nieces and nephews survive.

Mary Jean Smythers, 78, Bradenton, died December 22, 2008.

She was born June 5, 1930 in Allisonia, Virginia and moved to Bradenton in 1965 from Blacksburg, Virginia. She attended Radford College for two years before taking a job as lab technician at Radford, Va. Army Ammunition Plant, where she was employed for six years. She was a wonderful loving wife and mother and when her son, Charles, was born she became a full time housewife devoting her life to her family. She was a Sunday School teacher for twenty five years at Bayshore Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Bradenton and was dearly loved by all who came in contact with her. She was truly a servant of her Lord and Savior.

Mrs. Mellie Riner, 78, died in a local hospital at 5:30 a.m. today following a short illness.

Born April 6, 1892 at Allisonia, Va., she was the daughter of the late J.B. and Nancy Thomas.

Survivors include her husband, O.C. Riner; three sons, Everett of Princeton, and Earl and Archie Riner, both of Beckley and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Thursday in the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Dr. Kenneth Swank officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ronald E. Brown, Richard A. Seal and Eugene Seal; and one sister, Alma Tucker.

Mr. Seal is survived by two daughters, Phyllis S. Doss and husband Bob of Greensboro and Irene Seal and Jack Stewart of Greensboro; four sons, Larry M. Seal and wife Teresa of Lexington, Samuel K. Born March 24, 1923, in Rockingham County, to the late Edgar and Dollie Thomas, Mrs. Bates was a member of Lynnwood Lakes Baptist Church. She retired from Lorillard Tobacco Company, was a wonderful seamstress and enjoyed playing the piano. Being the mother of 11 children gave Margie little time for extracurricular activities however, family gathering always brought her much joy. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother, which made the Bates a five generation family.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Farmer Bates; two sons, Marshall B. Bates and Charles R. Bates; a sister, Mellie Seal and a brother, Morris B. Thomas.

Those left to cherish her memory include her surviving children, Paula Clark and husband, Dick, John Bates and wife, Linda, Jeanette Hart, Loretta Burcham and husband, Rev. GREENSBORO - Mr. James Hardy Hooker, Sr. passed away at Beacon Place on January 23, 2007, after a long battle of cancer.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, at Hanes Lineberry, Vanstory Chapel. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park.

James was born on June 8, 1927, in Guilford County to the late Zeb and Flossie Mae Hooker. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Hill and a brother, Frank Hooker.

Mr. Hooker is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances Thomas Hooker and six loving children, Mickey (Cathy) DeHart, James Hooker, Jr., Jerry (Becky) Hooker, Gary (Claire) Hooker, Demetrice "Dee" Abood and Beverly (Frank) Brigman; ten grandchildren; brother, Ralph Hooker (Louise); and two sisters, Ruby Overby and Stacey (Kenneth) Wynne.

Frances Louise Thomas Hooker, 86, of Greensboro died Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at George Brothers Funeral Service on June 20, 2015 at 11:00 AM with burial to follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
Frances was born November 8, 1928 in Rockingham County to the late Edgar Lemel and Dollie Burgess Thomas. She retired as a waitress. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Hooker, Sr., 1 brother and 2 sisters.
Survivors include her children, Mick DeHart (Cathy) of Spring Lake, NC, James Hooker, Jr. of Greensboro, Jerry Hooker (Becky) Salemburg, NC, Gary Hooker (Claire) of Greensboro, Dee Floyd (Randy) of Greensboro and 9 grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6-9 PM Friday, June 19, 2015 at the home of Gary and Claire Hooker, 1907 Opal Drive, Greensboro NC 27403.

She was preceded by her father and mother, and her husband, Edward Jewell Sr.

Lessie was an avid gardener and baker. She loved working with her flowers and baking all kinds of cakes. When her health permitted she was an active member of Masons Cove Chapel. She had worked as a convenience store owner, a ceramics studio operator, and was a former manager of Lendy's at Lakeside.

Surviving are her children, Walter L. Glass and wife, Marianne, Brenda Ricchi and husband, Tom, Wanda Desper and husband, David, Bruce Glass and wife, Lisa; stepson, Edward Lee Jewell Jr.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Stella King and husband, Sanford, Darlene Roop and husband, Doc; brother, Billy Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ethel Mae Midkiff Thomas, 94, of Rocky Mount, passed away September 3, 2006. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Earl Midkiff and Alvah Thomas and four sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her three sons and wives, Mathew and Irene Midkiff of Bassett, Donnie and Margaret Midkiff of Ferrum, Junior and Joyce Midkiff of Stuart; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Calvin Hickson, officiating with interment in the County Line Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home in Floyd.
