Probate Death Records

Death records were mandated in the state of Ohio in 1867. Probate Court was required to record the births and deaths as reported. Deaths were reported by the tax assessors, physicians, parents, etc. After December 20, 1908 the Department of Health took over this function. In Lake County Probate Court research room, there are two volumes of birth and death records. Each volume has births on one side of the book, and when turned over, deaths on the other side. There is a card index near the volumes.

This database is a transcription of the original records, proofread and made as close to the original as possible. Punctuation is not always as it appeared, but the script is accurate. Where there were ditto marks, the antecedent entry was typed instead of the marks. The original spanned two ledger sized pages. The transcription has been presented here to print on 8 1/2 X 11" paper.

The years stated are approximated as there are multiple death years on a page. To search for a name, it is suggested that the search engine on the home page be used. After the page is located, use the Edit/find-on-this-page feature of your browser.

Microfilm for these records is at Morley Library and the Kirtland Family History Center. They are also available through the Family History Library. The originals are still at the Probate Marriage Department, but because the pages are now falling out and crumbling, use of microfilm would be better for the original records.
