Topic: "Locating Local Manumission Records: Antebellum Ohio, the Journey North." In 1804, the State of Ohio enacted the first of the Ohio Black Codes, which mandated that Black and Mulatto persons entering into Ohio and wanting to remain in Ohio had to register themselves with their local probate court in order to prove their freedom. These individuals came from many slave states, i.e., VA, GA, NC, SC, KY, LA, MS, etc. This proof of freedom could be documented by producing emancipation papers from the person who had formerly enslaved them, or starting in 1807 bringing a white person as a character witness to court who would guarantee their good behavior to the judge. These documents can be found in what are called "Free Negro Registers." Learn about this state-wide research project, where you can find the registers; and what information you can find about your ancestor's life, family members, slaveholders, etc. AAGS meets at Shaker Heights Main Library, 16501 Van Aken Blvd., Shaker Hts.
