Activities of Genealogical Interest


Wildwood Cultural Center in Mentor will be having a Series of three Beginning and Intermediate genealogy classes, "Analysis of the Evidence." This will include basic recording and documentation, finding clues from the documents available, and reading between the lines. Instructor Cynthia Turk. Lake County Genealogical Society will meet September 26, 2002 at 10:00 AM at the Meeting Room in the Lake County Administration Building, Painesville. Program will be "Cemeteries and Epitaphs" by Jeanette "Teeter" Grosvenor.

Ashtabula County Chapter OGS will be hosting a bus trip to Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne October 16, 17 and 18, 2002. Additional pickup points are available. More information and application are available on their web site at www.ashtabulagen.org,

Casting of the Bell at Lake County Historical Society, Kirtland Hills, Ohio will take place on Saturday and Sunday October 19 and 20, 2002. Saturday will be casting and unmolding of the Bicentennial Bell for Lake County. Sunday will be polishing and ringing of the bell. See the world's only mobile foundry at work. No admission charge. Croatian Genealogy Seminar will be held Saturday October 26, 2002 11:00 to 3:00 at the American Croatian Lodge, 34900 Lakeshore Blvd., Eastlake, Ohio. Cost is $15.00 and includes light lunch. Heritage Genealogy Tours will be having thir annual Christmas Tour, a week of research in Salt Lake December 8-15, 2002. Perfect time, with reduced patrons and full staffing. This tour provides specialists to give personalized assistance, translations, classes, etc. The town is beautifully decorated for the season and concerts are everywhere. Lake County Genealogical Society will hold it's annual potluck on January 30, 2003 at 11:30 am at the LakeTran Building on Lake Shore Blvd just east of SR 44. The speaker will be Mr. Ted Minier, president of Ohio Genealogical Society in Mansfield. Bring tableware and dish to share.

Morley Library and Lake County Genealogical Society present a Night Owl Prowl research lock-in at Morley Library February 7, 2003 from 5:00 to 11:00 pm. There will be a "Meet the Author" session, and guest lecturer Ronna Bryant will speak. See the information sheet and application.

"The Underground Railroad of Lake County" will be presented by Karon Tomlinson of the Lake County Historical Society at Willowick Library February 24, 2003 at 7:00 pm. Reservations requested.

North East Ohio Civil War Round Table will be having a dedication ceremony for a new monument which lists the names of the 95 Civil War veterans buried in Willoughby Cemetery. This legacy project will be the culmination of years of research. The ceremony will take place at the cemetery on Sharpe Street in Willoughby at 10:30 a.m. Saturday May 31, 2003.

"Euclid Avenue: Cleveland's Sophisticated Lady." Richard Karberg discusses the glory days of Euclid Avenue. Books will be available for purchase. June 9, 2003 at 7:00 pm at Willowick Library. Reservations requested.

"Lighthouses of Lake Erie," Join Christopher Gillcrist of the Great Lakes Historical Society as he visits Lake Erie's lighthouses. August 4, 2003 at 7:00 pm at Willowick Library. Reservations requested.

The Village of Fairport Harbor and the Fairport Harbor Historical Society are pleased to announce the placement of an historic marker on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 10:00. This historic marker commemorates the Mormon Migration through Fairport Harbor in the 1830's.
The 18" by 24" bronze plaque will be mounted on a large stone and located across the street from the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse. The museum houses numerous historical artifacts and photos, including a display detailing the Mormon Migration through Fairport Harbor to Kirtland, Ohio. The marker is being provided by the Mormon Historical Sites Foundation, of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dr. Fred Woods, professor at Brigham Young University and Executive Director of the Mormon Historic Sites Foundation will be in attendance at the placement of the Fairport historic marker (see above), and will offer a fireside to those interested in learning about this migration Saturday evening August 23, 2003 at the Kirtland Historic Sites Visitors' Center. VietNam Wall Tour will be in Madison Village on August 29, 30, and 31, 2003 with reading of each of the names. The Madison Historical Society Gift Shop at will be open during that time at 6769 Middle Ridge Road. Other activities will be occuring on the square as well.

Lake County's Underground Railroad Heritage Tour. Narrated bus tour to Ashtabula Harbor, a tour of the ship Amistad, shopping, tour of Hubbard House, dinner at Old Tavern in Unionville including tunnel tour. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, 12:30-7:00 pm. "Revisiting Ellensburgh, A Vanished Town" A Lake MetroPark program at Arcola Creek Estuary. Ages 10 and older can discover the interesting human history of the early 1800s in Lake County, at the estuary which was once a bustling shipbuilding, ironworking town. Madison Historical Society is hosting a Cemetery Tour Saturday Sept. 20, 2003 from noon to 4 p.m. Three area cemeteries will be visited with special "appearances" by many of the town's community builders. This is a fundraiser for the society.
