Morning Session: "Internet Sites That Make Immigration Searching Easier," with Jack R. Braverman
The presentation centers on a number of Internet sites that make genealogical searches easier. Additionally, recent improvements of well-know sites will be covered. For example, soon after the Ellis Island site went online, Stephen Morse, who is something of a genius at programming and intensely interested in genealogy, realized that the contract company that developed the software overlooked many opportunities that could make searching easier. Furthermore, the complexity of Eastern European names in their various spellings and sounds came to be seen as a huge hole in the software. Morse then began his own site which linked to the Ellis Island site, but, before it did, his "front end" program allowed for more intelligent search techniques, and, also, for language differences. At first, his site was centered on Jewish names from Eastern Europe. Later the flexibility and techniques came to be of use to any other ethnic group. Time permitting, improvements to the Port of Hamburg Emigration site will be discussed, as will a few others.
