Activities of Genealogical InterestMonday 3 Jan 2005, 7:30 to 9 p.m. Cuyahoga Valley Gen. Society meets at Independence Civic Center, Willow Room. Wally Huskonen, CGRS, will speak on "Learn about Grandpa’s Neighborhood Using Sanborn Maps." One way to learn about urban neighborhoods in the late 1800s and much of the 1900s is to consult the maps created and maintained by the Sanborn Map Co. for use by fire insurance agencies. These maps were created by neighborhood and showed all existing buildings, including residential buildings. Commercial and public buildings, schools, and churches all were labeled. Wally Huskonen will discuss how to access these resources on-line and at local repositories. This is the annual meeting, potluck, and induction of First Families of Lake County of the Lake County Genealogical Society at 11:30 am at the LakeTran Building on Lake Shore Blvd just east of SR 44. Bring tableware and dish to share. Keynote speaker will be Rose Moore, A lifelong resident of Lake County. Rose has been involved in the newspaper world since the 1950's. She will speak on the topic "History of the Underground Railroad." February 7, 2005 7:30 pm"Why Attend a Genealogical Conference?" will be the topic at the regular meeting of the Cuyahoga Valley Genealogical Society. Members will discuss the benefits of attending various national and regional genealogical conferences scheduled during 2005. One example is the Ohio Genealogical Society 2005 conference that will be held April 14-16 at Quaker Square in nearby Akron, will feature several interesting topics, such as British Isles research, Ellis Island research, military research, and court house research. A no-charge genealogy trade show will be held in conjunction with the conference. We’ll also discuss organizing car pools to visit the OGS conference and show. Sunday 13 February 2005 2:00 p.m. Geauga County Genealogical Society meets at Chardon Library "Organizing Your Research." It is now time to start planning for your spring and summer research. Before you can think about a research trip (even a short one), you need to get organized and update your charts. Tuesday 19 April 2005 12:30 pm British Genealogical Seminar will be presented at Western Reserve Historical Society. Maggie Loughran and Paul Blake will give a presentation aimed at both beginning and intermediate British research. They will discuss the time period of the early 18th century through the 20th century. The basic steps of starting British genealogical research will be covered and the use of the internet will be emphasized. Betit, Professional genealogist, researcher, author and lecturer, will discuss what to do if you only know the county in Ireland and how to locate the place of origin of your Irish ancestors.
