Mr. Beachy, a retired farmer and carpenter, is now an educator, newspaper columnist, author, and Civil War Historian. Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at 7:30 pm The Wellington Genealogical Group will host a joint meeting with the Lorain County Chapter of OGS at the Wellington Town Hall on the town square, second floor, Wellington, Ohio. Following a short meeting, the Oberlin Historical and Improvement Organization (O.H.I.O) will reenact the famous Oberlin-Wellington Slave Rescue of 1858, an episode in the tale of "the town that started the Civil War." Sunday 12 September 2004 The Annual One World Day at the Cleveland Cultural Garden celebrates the area's rich multiculturalism. A parade of flags begins at 12:30 pm at the Cleveland Rockefeller Greenhouse on East Blvd. Entertainment and a naturalization ceremony accent the day. Monday, September 13, 7:30 to 9 p.m. Cuyahoga Valley Gen. Society meets at Independence Civic Center, Willow Room. Topic is "Summer Research Success Stories." Marie Weiss Herlevi from Akron-Summit County Public Library will speak about the "NEW & NEGLECTED RESOURCES IN SPECIAL COLLECTIONS." Monday 4 October 2004 7:30 to 9 p.m. Cuyahoga Valley Gen. Society meets at Independence Civic Center, Willow Room. Topic will be " Early Catholic Church Records in the Diocese of Cleveland" to be presented by Christine Krosel, Director of Archival Research. Ms. Krosel will discuss what sacramental records are available from Catholic churches throughout the Cleveland Diocese from the late 1800s and early 1900s and how they can be obtained. She will discuss baptismal, marriage, death, first communion, and confirmation records, and how some records were transferred to other parishes when some parishes were closed. The topic for the discussion session, open to any experienced genealogist, appeared in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 92, no.1, March 2004. It is titled "A Detour from the Conventional: The Search for the Parents of Margaret Murray Goheen," beginning on page 51. The December meeting will feature a video on "Christmas Unwrapped, The History of Christmas." People all over the world celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25th. But why is the Savior's nativity marked by gift giving, and was He really born on that day? And just where did the Christmas tree come from? The program will answer these and other questions about Christmas. To help celebrate the Christmas season, members will also relate some of their favorite memories of Christmas while they were growing up. Tuesday 14 Dec 2004 12 noon "Awakening: Religious Expression in the Western Reserve." Western Reserve Historical Society/Lawnfield Winter Lunch & Lecture Series at Best Western Lawnfield Inn and Suites, 8434 Mentor Avenue, Mentor, Ohio. In the early 19th century two important American religious groups were founded. Much of the early history of the Disciples of Christ and the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) took place in northeast Ohio. The two groups often met and occasionally clashed in the turbulent religious atmosphere of the Second Great Awakening.
