Wednesday 3 January 2007 7:30 pm Jewish Genealogy Society of Cleveland will host speaker Sean Martin, director of the Jewish Archives at Western Reserve Historical Society. His topic will be "History of Zionism in Cleveland." Guests welcome.

Thursday 4 January 2007 7:30 pm "Memories are Made of This: The Cleveland Memory Project and Special Collections at Cleveland State University" will be presented by Bill Barrow, Special Collections Librarian, CSU at the regular meeting of East Cuyahoga County Genealogical Society.

Monday 8 January 2007 7:30 pm The Cuyahoga Valley Genealogical Society will meet. Wally Huskonen will present "Naturalization Records: What They Are & How to Find Them." The requirements for immigrants to become naturalized as U.S. citizens changed over the years, but generally included the filing of a declaration of intent and a naturalization petition. Later records are particularly rich with genealogical detail. The lecture includes a history of naturalization laws in America, courts where naturalizations were recorded, especially in Ohio, and information that can be found in naturalization files.

The speaker presents information on DNA in clear and understandable language focusing on how to add DNA evidence to your search for ancestors and descendants rather than on the science of DNA.

Her topic, which is not limited to African-American research, is entitled "Cluster Genealogy." She will explore the use of many community resources when research progress seems blocked.

Saturday 17 February 2007 9:30 am - 2:00 CAGG (Computer Aided Genealogy Group - Cleveland) will meet. Morning Session: "Make the Grandparent Connection and Go Beyond Barney" with Fairview Park Children’s Librarian Mary Erbs and Genealogy Specialist Joni Mihelich. Make new memories as you experience some of the fun ways your story can become your grandchild’s story. At the same time, get to meet our new Genealogy Specialist at the library.
Afternoon Session: "Family History as Fun" with Jean Hoffman. Many times genealogists lament how boring history seemed in school but exciting now. The key is making history about real people we can connect to ourselves. Look at a few ways to bring that excitement to your family members young and old. Recipes, photos, clothing, jewelry, cars, and other memorabilia can be combined in new ways to share or as lures for more information.

Saturday 3 March 2007 9:00 am The Genealogical Committee, an auxiliary of the Western Reserve Historical Society and the African American Genealogical Society of Cleveland are co-sponsors of an African-American genealogy research seminar to be held at the Western Reserve Historical Society. Reginald Washington of the National Archives in Washington D.C., will be the featured speaker. Other speakers include Dr. Deborah Abbott, Alana Baranick, Rev. Valentino Lassister, Sandra Malitz, Bridget Strong and Casandra Brown. Topics include Federal Census, Freedman’s Bureau Records, Slave Research, Obituaries: A Tool of Black History, Black Migration Patterns, Underground Railroad Quilts, Southern Claims Commission, Creative Displays for Family History. Monday 5 March 2007 7:30 pm The Cuyahoga Valley Genealogical Society will feature speaker Jean M. Hoffman, CG , presenting "Life of a Postcard." Postcards were saved more than other papers, preserved addresses, a person's handwriting and interesting information. Even if they were never mailed, the pictures really are "worth a thousand words." Especially as they often show a view unlike today. Learn where to look for these gems in the family antique marts, archives, and online. Jean will show ways to interpret and make them an exciting part of your family history.

The meeting will be free and open to the public. It will be at Menorah Park, 27100 Cedar Road, Beachwood, Ohio. The topic will be: "One-Step Webpages: A Potpourri of Genealogical Search Tools." The One-Step website began as an aid for finding passengers in the Ellis Island database, expanded to help with searching in the 1930 census, and has continued to evolve. It now includes over 100 web-based tools divided into twelve separate categories ranging from genealogical searches to astronomical calculations to last-minute bidding on e-bay. This presentation will describe the range of tools available and give the highlights of each one. Scott Hutcherson, Vice President Grays Armory, member of the organization for 10 years, will give an overview of the Grays Armory, The Cleveland Grays organization, and the militia tradition which it upholds. The Grays Armory in Cleveland was built in 1893 as a headquarters for an independent company of Militia. The Grays trace their origin to an era when Cleveland was just emerging from a frontier village to a city in its own right.

Monday 3 December 2007 7:30 pm Don Kozlowski, volunteer researcher at the Cuyahoga County Archives will present "Where There's A Will ... There're Relatives!" Don will guide you through the sometimes dead-end roads of the Wills and Estate Case files of Cuyahoga County. The voluntary "admission fee" will be will be canned goods in any amount that would be suitable for distribution to the needy for a happier holiday.
