DEATH OF MRS. M. K. COURTNEY SR. - (3-14-1924)

   Mrs Annie Foote Courtney, wife of M. K. Courtney Sr., died Friday
March 14th at 7 am, at her home at Hartwood, Stafford county, following
an illness of 42 days.  Mrs. Courtney was 53 years old and was the
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Graves Sr..
   She is survived by her husband, 2 daughters, Misses Lillian J. and
Ethel D. Courtney, 3 sons Messrs W.T. , M.K. Jr, and W.L.F. Courtney all of
Hartwood.
She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Reuben Mountjoy of Triangle, and 2
brothers,  W.F. Graves Jr., of Hartwood and John H. Graves at present of Glendenin,
W.Va..
   Funeral at 2 pm Sunday from Richland Church, services by Rev. Jas. E.
Jett and Rev. C.W. Brooks. Interment in the family burying grounds.


                  MILTON COURTNEY DIES IN STAFFORD

               Well Known Resident Of Stafford Passes Away
                       Funeral Services Friday At 2 P.M. ( 1-6-1930)


   Milton K. Courtney Sr., 62, died yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock at
his home at Hartwood, Stafford county, after a long illness.  He was a life
long resident of Stafford and had many friends there and in the city,
where he was well known.
   He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Phebe Courtney; two daughters Mrs
Harvey Rodgers of Fredericksburg; Mrs. Walter Snellings of Spotsylvania county ;
three sons Thompson and Keith Courtney of Stafford and Welford Courtney
of Fredericksburg; two half-sisters Mrs. Grover Storks and Mrs. Maude
Eley of Storks,Va. and one half-brother Judson Courtney of Washington
D.C.
   Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 pm from the home with
interment in the Richland Cemetery, Stafford county.
   The active pallbearers will be Stacy Mills, Frank Huffman, Robert
Huffman, Will Huffman, George Huffman and Eddie Ennis. The Union Brotherhood of
Carpenters and Joiners will act as honorary pallbearers. 


  DEATH OF JAS. T. COURTNEY - ( 2-27-1911)

   Mr. James T. Courtney died at his home near Hartwood, Stafford county,
Saturday, aged 75 years.
   Mr. Courtney was a gallant Confederate soldier, a prominent citizen of
his county and highly respected by all who knew him. He is survived by
several children.


 

 Little Girl Dies

 Margaret Anne SNELLINGS, little  daughter of Mr. And Mrs Arthur  Snellings, died at the home of her parents in Stafford, yesterday after a lingering illness. The little girl was three years and five months old and was a favorite with all who knew her. Her death occurred at her home but prior to that she had been a patient in the Mary Washington Hospital here and
in a Richmond hospital.
   Funeral services are to take place
tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock
in  Berea Baptist Church with the
Rev. Robert F. Caverlee, pastor of
Fredericksburg Baptist Church,
officiating. Interment will be in the
church burying grounds. ( 5-4-1936)

 

 INFANT IS BURIED    

 The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snellings, who lived on Warrenton Road, just west of    Falmouth, was buried at Berea Baptist Church Sunday, following services conducted by the Rev.

                   FUNERAL THURSDAY FOR MRS. PAYNE

   Mrs. Lucy Snellings Payne, 63. died Tuesday at her home at Berea,
following a long illness.
   She is survived by her husband, R.D. Payne; one son Richard Payne,
Falmouth; three daughters, Mrs John R. Brown, of Madison, and Mrs Lynwood
Christy and Mrs John L. Gordon, of Berea; and two brothers
Van and Walter Snellings of Fredericksburg.
   Funeral services will be held at Ramoth Church at 3 pm Thursday.
conducted by the Rev E.V. Peyton assisted by the Rev. Lloyd Boutchyard.
   Active pallbearers will be Ashton Christy, Eustace Blake, Gordon
Christy, Charles Young, Fleet Burgess and Stacy Raines. Honorary
pallbearers: Raymond Coakley, James Ashby Sr., Jimmy Rose, Dr. T.B. Payne, Johnnie Patton and Norman Blake.
   The remains will rest at the Wheeler and Thompson Funeral Home until

                    RITES TODAY FOR ROBERT D. PAYNE

   Robert D. Payne, 71, died Wednesday at his home near Berea in Stafford
County following a long illness. For twenty years, Mr. Payne was
connected with the Buick Motors Company in Fredericksburg and was widely known
through out the surrounding counties.
   He is survived by one son, Richard Payne,Falmouth; three daughters,
Mrs. John Brown, Madison;and Mrs Lynwood Christy and Mrs John L Gordon,
Berea; one sister, Mrs Howard Flatford, Garrisonville; and two brothers,
George and Frank Payne, of Garrisonville.
   Funeral service, were held at Ramoth Church at 3 pm today, conducted
by  Dr. Robert F. Caverlee, with burial in Ramoth cemetery.
   Active pallbearers were Ashton Christy, Gordon Christy, Eustace Blake,
Charles Young, Fleet Burgess and Stacy Raines,  Honorary pallbearers;

John L. Gordon

 John L. Gordon, 92,of Stafford County,
died Sunday April 2, 2006 at his home.
 He was born and raised in Madison County.
He was a World War II US Navy veteran,
having served in Brazil from 1942 to 1945.
Upon his return, he moved to Fredericksburg
and Managed the American Oil plant until it
closed. He then worked for Oscar Tate
Buick-Pontiac.
 Mr Gordon was a member of the Berea Baptist
Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and
the American Legion.
 He was preceded in death by his wife,
Mary Etta Payne Gordon; a brother H.W.
Gordon, and a sister, Ruth Gordon.
 Survivors include his daughters, Sue Gordon
Davis, of Moyock, N.C.; Jane Gordon Rigoulot
of Montclair and Betty P Gordon Of Fredericksburg;
his sisters,Mildred Holmes and Hilda Sudduth both
of Warrenton; and two grandsons, James Gordon
of Charlotte N.C. and Richard Alan Rigoulot of
Christopher Newport University.
 A funeral will be held at 1pm Thursday
April 6 at Berea Baptist Church with the Rev.
Steve Mills officiating. Burial will follow in the church
cemetery.

 


   

                                  MRS FRANCES P. CHRISTY

   The funeral for Mrs. Frances Payne Christy,84 , will be held at 1 pm
Wednesday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Services, Fredericksburg Chapel,
with the Rev. Jeffrey C. Hudgins officiating, Burial will be in Berea
Church cemetery.
   The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 pm Tuesday at the funeral
home.
   Mrs Christy died Friday, May 19, at the residence of her caregivers,
Margie and Jim Robinson of Spotsylvania. Born in Stafford County, she
lived there until 1993.
   She had worked for many years at F.W, Woolworth in Fredericksburg and
had also worked in the cafeteria at Hartwood Elementary School.
   She was a member of Berea Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday
school; teacher and church recording secretary and was a member of the
Women's Missionary Union. She was also a member of the Berea Community
Circle.
   Survivors include her husband, J.Lynwood Christy of Fredericksburg; a
son, Robert J. Christy of Fredericksburg; a daughter Rebecca C. Sever of
Richmond; a sister Mary Etta Gordon of Stafford; and four grandchildren.
   The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of

         SERVICE SET TOMORROW FOR FRANKLIN W. WYNE

   A funeral service for Franklin Wesley Wyne of Falmouth, who died
Monday at his home, will be held Wednesday at Wheeler & Thompson Funeral
Home.
   The 11am service will be conducted by the Rev.. J. Howard Cates.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
   An electrical contractor, he was a past president and charter member
of the Stafford Lions Club, and in 1957 was named zone chairman for the
Lions International.
   In 1955 he was named man of the year by Stafford Ruritan Club. He was
a former teacher of industrial arts at Falmouth High School and served as
tie- breaker for the Stafford Board of Supervisors.
   Surviving are his wife, Mrs Lucille S. Wyne; two daughters, Mrs Linda
Pulliam of Fredericksburg, and Sandra Whittaker of Manassas; two
brothers, Dal and Richard Wyne both of Falmouth, and a sister Mrs. Nellie Tyson of Falmouth.
   Pallbearers will be Edwin Young, Pershing Snellings, Bernard Kline,
Charles McDaniel, Carl Gwaltney and Charles Van Aukens. ( 1-9-1967)


             
                                 MRS LUCILLE WYNE   

    A funeral service for Mrs Lucille Snellings Wyne, 63, of Falmouth,
who died Saturday in the Mary Washington Hospital, was held this morning
at Wilson Smith Funeral Home . Burial was in the Sunset Memorial Gardens,
The Rev. Howard Cates officiated.
   Mrs Wyne is survived by two daughters, Mrs Linda W. Pulliam of
Fredericksburg and Mrs Sandra W. Whittaker of Manassas; her stepmother,
Mrs Ethel Snellings of Fredericksburg; one brother Leslie Snellings of
Fredericksburg; three half sisters, Mrs Bettie Rae Billingsley of
Fredericksburg Mrs Doris Byram of Virginia Beach and Mrs Christine Shrout of
Gaithersburg, MD.; one half brother Walter Snellings Jr. ,of Spotsylvania county; three grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew.
   The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of

                        LESLIE W. SNELLINGS
  
   A funeral for Leslie W. Snellings, 84, of Fredericksburg will be held
at 11 am Friday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg
Chapel. The Rev. Jim Stone will officiate, and burial will be in Sunset
Memorial Gardens.
  Pallbearers will be Steve Carr, Richard Merryman, Timmy Merryman, Lloyd
McGhee, Linwood Grant and Wink Thompson.
   The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral
home.
   Mr. Snellings died Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Mary Washington Hospital.
   Born in Fredericksburg, he had retired as a service station manager
for Sidney Armstrong. He was a lifelong member of Fredericksburg Fire
Department and was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 875 in Fredericksburg.
He was an Air Force veteran.
   Survivors include his wife Alice "Ducky" Snellings; a son, Terry L.
Snellings of Fredericksburg; two daughters, Beverley A. Snellings of
Fredericksburg and Cathy S. Harman of King George; a brother Walter
Snellings Jr. of  Spotsylvania;three sisters Doris By ram of Stafford;
Christine S. Shout of German town, MD. and Bettie Billingsley of
Fredericksburg; one grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
   The family request that expressions of sympathy take the form of

                      THE LATE JOSEPH WINE
            
                       Crest, Va. , July 12th 1909

   Mr. Joseph Wine, who died Sunday, July 11th, 1909, at 3 pm  of
catarrhal affliction and other diseases at his residence near Crest,
Stafford county. In the seventy-seventh year of his age, was an excellent citizen,
and did what he could to promote the welfare of his community. He was a
blacksmith from his early youth till last Dec., when he was taken sick and
gradually grew worse till the end came. He served as magistrate of his
district for eight years and his decisions were considered just.  He was
always a friend in need and was ever ready to aid any good cause.  The
whole community will greatly miss him.
   He leaves a widow-- his third wife, and one young son, and four or
five sons and daughters by the other marriages.  Mrs. William Snellings,
of Crest, being one of his daughters.  Buried at 3 pm July 12th, in the
family burial ground.
   May the blessed God keep and preserve his widow and children and may
they be privileged to meet him in glory.

   Rites Friday For Stafford Soldier

Funeral services for Private Harold William Graves,28. of Storck,Stafford
County, who was killed Tuesday in a truck accident at Fort Benning, Ga.
will be held at Richland Church in Stafford at 4:40 p.m. Friday. The
funeral
cortege will leave the Wheeler & Thompson funeral home here at 4 p.m..

Private Graves, a native and life long resident of Stafford was killed
when a truck in which he was riding overturned down a 18 foot embankment.
He was inducted into the army Nov. 16, 1942 and was a member of Company
E, 55th Engineers , 110th Armored Division.

Surviving are his parents Mr and Mrs William Graves and two bothers who
are also in the army, Jack Graves serving in Australia and Lester Graves
in Iceland. ( 4- 13- 1943)

        Stafford Man , 74, Dies At His Home

  William Forest Graves, 74, of Hartwood,Stafford County, died Sunday
evening.
  He is survived by his wife, Mrs Julia Graves; two sons, Jackson and
Lester Graves of Hartwood; a sister Mrs Clara Mountjoy of Triangle; and
two grandchildren, Christine and Glenn Graves.
  Funeral services will be conducted at Richland Church, Wednesday at 4
p.m. by the Rev. Edward Peyton, assisted by the Rev. Herbert Reamey, of
Triangle.
  Active pallbearers will be Thompson, Keith and Welford Courtney,
Lawrence and Howard Mountjoy and William Patton, all nephews.
  Honorary pa;;bearers will be John Eley, Stacey Mills. Charles Blake,
William O. Allison, John Patton Benjamin Burton, Dr. Patton and Dr.

          Mrs. Julia P. Graves

  A funeral service for Mrs Julia P. Graves, 83, of Hartwood, who died
Thursday in the Mary Washington Hospital will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday
at Richland Baptist Church in Stafford, with interment in the church
cemetery. The Rev. William E. Jeffcoat will officiate.
  Mrs Graves was the widow of William F. Graves. She was named the first
Grandmother of the Year in 1976 by Stafford County Parks and Recreation
Department, was a lifetime member of Richland Baptist Church, and was a
Sunday School teacher there for 35 years.
  Mrs Graves is survived by two sons, Jackson F. Graves of Falmouth and
Lester C. Graves of Hartwood; two brothers A. Clark Patton and George E.
Patton, both of Falmouth; two sisters. Mrs Pearl Dickenson of Berea and
Mrs Edith Dempsey of Miami, Fla. ; three grandchildren; and a number of
nieces and nephews.
  The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Wheeler &
Thompson Funeral Home. Mrs. Graves body will lie at the church from 1:30
p.m. Saturday. ( 7-14-1977)

    Harold Doggett Brown, 59, of 125 Caroline St., died Sunday (Nov. 6, 1966)
at Mary Washington Hospital. He was a supervisor for Continental
Baking Company, and a member of the Elks Lodge.
     Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Frances Snellings Brown; a son,
Sammy Bernard Brown; two daughters, Mrs. Penny Coleman and Miss Lizabeth Brown, all of Fredericksburg, and two grandchildren.
     Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Wheeler
and Thompson Funeral home. The Rev. J. Hough will officiate, with
internment in Oak Hill Cemetery.
     Pallbearers will be Lloyd Stevens, Peyton Mason, Carl Hill, Vernie Davenport, Walter Lowry and T. R. Passagaluppi.   
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Elks Lodge, and employees of Continental Baking Company.

                        Francis S. Brown
 
     Mrs. Frances Snellings Brown, 78, a lifelong resident of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at her home on
Caroline Street.
     She was the widow of Harold Doggett Brown. Mrs. Brown was a member of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church and the King Philatha Sunday School Class there.
     Survivors include a son, Sammy B. Brown of Fredericksburg; two daughters, Penny B. Coleman of Spotsylvania County and Lisabeth B. Graniger of Stafford County; a sister, Vera S. Davenport of
Fredericksburg; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
     A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Oak Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Carrington Bailey officiating.

                        William  C. Snellings
 
        William  (Bill) C. Snellings, 55 of 1330 William St, died Thursday, Decenber 11, 1968 at his home after a brief illiness.
         He is survived by a son, William C. Snellings, Jr.
of Minot, ND; four daughters, Mrs. Alice D. Robinson and Patricia Ann, Linda Lee and Amy Marye Snellings, all of Fredericksburg; and a sister, Mrs. D. W. Hayes of Lewisburg, PA.
        A graveside funeral service, conducted by Dr. Charles W. Boyd, will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens at 11 a.m. Sunday.
        He was a World War II Veteran, a member of the American Legion and a member of the Fredericksburg United Methodist Chruch.  He was employed for the State Highway Department.

                        Mrs. Virginia S. Hayes 
 
        Mrs. Virginia Snellings Hayes, 79, of Weems in Lancaster County, a native of Fredericksburg, died Wednesday, January 10, 1996, at a hospital in Lancaster.
        She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock.
        Survivors include her husband, retired Col. David W.Hayes,
 a son David W. Hayes of Harvard, Mass.; a daughter, Rosa Hayes Nine of Gaithersburg, MD; three grandchildren; four nieces and
one nephew.
         A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church
at a later date.  Burial will be in the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY.
         The family requests that expressions of sympathy take
the form of Contributions ot Grace Episcopal Church, Box 1059,
Kilmarnock, VA 22482.

                           Walter Snellings, Jr.  
 
        Walter Snellings, Jr. 74, of Fredericksburg died Sunday,
March 9, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital. He was the son of the late Walter and Ethel Snellings.  He retired from the National Park Service in 1987 after 40 years of service and was a former board member of the Hazelwild Farm Education Foundation, where he worked since retirement.  Mr. Snellings was a member, deacon and Sunday School teacher at Salem Baptist Church. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War.
        Surviving are his wife, Virginia Mizelle Snellings; four children,
Pamela V. Seay, Walter B. Snellings, Teresa C. Carneal and her
husband, Michael B. Carneal, Van I. Snellings and his wife, Tammy G. Snellings; six grandcildren, John T. Seay and his wife, Teresa B.
Seay, Brian S. Seay and his wife, Becky B. Seay, Kerri D. Carneal, Kelli R. Carneal, Ryan V. Snellings and Logan G. Snellings; a great-granddaughter, Carly M. Seay, all of Fredericksburg; three sisters, Bettie S. Billingsley of Fredericksburg, Doris A. Byram of Stafford and Christine J. Shrout of Germantown, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
        A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Baptist Church, with the Rev. Randy H. Allenswork and the Rev. John  Gordon officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel.
        Due to his drive for the completion of the church family life center, the family requests that contributions in his name be made to Salem Baptist Church Family Life Center, 4044 Plank Road, Fredericksburg, VA  22407.

                                James W. Bryam
 
        James Wesley Byram, 78, of Stafford County died Saturday
July 7, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital.
        A Stafford native, he had retired as General Manager of
Silver Chevrolet.  He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
        Mr. Byram was a member of the Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge
Post 290.
        Survivors include his wife, Doris Snellings Byram, and two
sons, James Wesley Byram. Jr. and Walter Gregory Byram, both of Stafford.
        A graveside service will be held at 1p.m. Wednesday in Sunset
Memorial Gardens with Rev. Page Young officiating.
        The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at
Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel.
