It is with great honor we
announce the passing of Leonard Jefferson Nolen I who died November 13,
2004 at Snyder Nursing Home in Salem. Mr. Nolen was born in Floyd County on
May 8, 1915. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mildred V.
Mitchell Nolen. Leonard is survived by son, Leonard (Lennie) Nolen and
wife, Sylvia; daughter, Senora Donahue and husband, Lewis; grandchildren,
Cynthia and Rick Radford, and Victoria Blake and Jeff Nolen; six
great-grandchildren; sisters, Tillie Richards and Eloise Rogers; and many
nieces, nephews, and extended family. Our father, grandfather, and true
friend was a very caring, fun-loving and precious gentleman who loved his
family and showed his love continuously with great pride and honor. We
carry many great memories of all the years we had together and feel blessed
to have known him and his great presence in our lives. His loving spirit
and uplifting soul will surely be missed. The Nolen name will live on
forever. Leonard was baptized at Mount Tabor Church of God. Leonard served
in the navy prior to his marriage, and he still talked fondly about his
service regularly. He owned and operated "Nolen's Restaurant" on
Cove Road in the 60's and 70's and was loved by many regular customers. In
1975, Pa Pa and Mildred moved to Floyd, Va., where he built his home and
lived until his parting. While living in Floyd and in his retirement years,
Leonard ran the tennis courts at Virginia Tech for 5 years. Leonard has
talked much of Tech since, and we all know how much working there and
knowing the professors meant to him. He was also very proud of his Sox this
year. During his retirement, he spent his time with his family and his pets
enjoying poker games on a regular basis! In celebration of his life,
donations may be made to Skyline Nursing home in Floyd, Va., and/or Snyder
Nursing home in Salem. Va. We also would like to thank Good Shephard
Hospice for their support and comfort during this time. Viewing will be
held Monday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gardner Funeral home in Floyd,
Va. The funeral to be held Tuesday November 16, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the
Gardner Funeral Home at 202 East Oxford Street, Floyd, Va. 24091 with the
Reverend Branan Thompson officiating.

Quesenberry Shortt FLOYD, Va. Bernease Shortt, 85, beloved mother, sister,
grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend passed away quietly and
dignified in her daughter's home in Roanoke, Va., on Saturday, November 9,
2013. Born in Willis, Va., on February 22, 1928, to Sibley Criner and
Bertha Turpin Criner, she grew up learning how to work hard, take care of
her neighbors, and serve the Lord. She worked as a seamstress at area
factories. She also worked in the Floyd County High School cafeteria. Her
most rewarding job came later in her life when she worked as a caregiver to
the elderly until she was 79 years old. Bernease loved spending time at her
home in Floyd. She was a gifted gardener and loved flowers. With each
season, there would be a new bloom of life and beauty outside of her home.
She also enjoyed reading, sewing, and was an amazing self-taught cook. She
enjoyed her morning coffee and making food for her family. Nothing made her
smile brighter than visits from her children and grandchildren with whom
she shared memories and wisdom. She embraced life and lived it gracefully,
being thankful for her many years. She was a devout Christian and was
devoted to living morally and giving herself to others. She had many dear
friends including those at New Haven Baptist Church, where she was a long
time member. Her home was warm and always welcoming to visitors. Bernease
married Lonnie Quesenberry, and later was married to Rural Shortt. Bernease
is survived by her children, Joyce (Arthur) Askey, Maurice (Connie)
Quesenberry, Greg (Debbie) Shortt; and by her sister, Ethelene DeVore. She
is also survived by her grandchildren, Megan Quesenberry, Michelle (Mark)
Faherty, Marc (Kim) Quesenberry, Kendall Shortt and fiancée, Whitney Scott,
and Korey Shortt; great-grandchildren Marshall and Elijah Jaxon Faherty;
and lifelong friends, Madeline Shortt, Phyllis Quesenberry, and Linda Bell.
