He started school in August 1926 at Center Point School until the 7th grade, and then attended Independence School District until his graduation in 1940. Truman played basketball in school. He worked in his father's blacksmith shop and on the family farm. He came to Oklahoma City in 1940 to attend aircraft sheet metal school. In 1941, Truman went to Wichita, Kansas, to work for Boeing Aircraft, where he worked on tooling for the B-17 and B-29 Bombers. In January 1943, Truman was drafted into the Army Air Corps and went to Fort Sill for induction and training as a Sheet Metal Specialist. Truman was assigned to the newly activated 445th Heavy Bombardment Group at Gowen Field, Idaho, for ground-crew training on the B-24 Liberator Bomber. He departed the U.S. with 17,000 other troops for England on the Queen Mary in October 1943, making his way to the 445th Base at Tibenham, Norwich County, England. Truman was stationed at Tibenham until the war's end. He was a member of the 703rd Bomb Squadron, which was commanded by the film actor James Stewart. After returning from England and receiving his discharge in 1945, he worked in construction in Oklahoma and in Kansas for the D.C. Bass Construction Company. Truman married Evelyn Mae Thomas in Perryton, Texas, May 21, 1949 and lived there until 1952. Truman and Evelyn came to Oklahoma City and he began his career as a home builder and land developer. Truman was one of the founders of Architectural Building Specialties, a manufacturer of hollow-metal door and window frames in the 60's. In the 70's and 80's, Truman concentrated on land development and home building. He developed several home additions in South Oklahoma City, Del City, and Edmond. Truman was a respected home builder. He built many homes around the metro area for family and friends, and stayed active in land development to this day. Truman loved to be around his family and friends. He loved children. He loved dogs. Recently, he'd even befriended a squirrel that lived in the backyard and fed her on a daily basis. He had a gift. Truman was preceded by his mother and father, one brother, Ewell Dickerson and one sister, Reba Williams, and one great-grandchild, Lauren Hilsheimer. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Mae Dickerson; one daughter, Shirley Hilsheimer and husband Dan of Tulsa; one son, Keith Dickerson of Edmond; grandchildren, Chad Hilsheimer, Mark Hilsheimer, Timothy Dickerson, and John Dickerson; and one great-grandchild, Adam Hilsheimer. She was married to her husband of 62 years, Truman F. Dickerson, in Perryton, Texas, on May 21, 1949. Evelyn was a devoted wife and mother. She loved the home her husband built for her in 1959 and lived there until recently. She enjoyed listening to music performances. She enjoyed a good steak. She liked watching the Oklahoma City Thunder. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Truman, a brother Ira Lee Thomas, sisters Ava Leona (Thomas) and Lolita Louise (Thomas), and great-granddaughter Lauren Elise Hilsheimer. Evelyn is survived by her sister Ella Orvelle (Thomas), daughter Shirley Hilsheimer, son Keith Dickerson, grandchildren Chad Hilsheimer, Mark Hilsheimer and wife Kirsten, Timothy Dickerson, and John Dickerson, great-grandchildren Adam Hilsheimer, Jake Hilsheimer, and Miles Dickerson. Born Sept. 19, 1925 at Shawsville, Va., he was the son of the late Andy and Sarah Akers Dickerson. Mr. Dickerson was educated in Shawsville, served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army. He received the World War II Victory Medal, Bronze Star Medal, European American Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. Woodie had worked for the Virginian, N & W, and had retired from the Norfolk Southern Railroad while working in the Bridge/Carpenter Department. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance Ways. He was a member of the Woodman of the World Camp No. 217, Princeton, VFW Chapter 2703 Princeton and the American Legion Post 54 of Princeton. Woodie was of the Methodist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Andy Dickerson; a brother, Riley Tazewell Dickerson; and a sister, Pauline Conner. Mr. Dickerson was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors: His devoted wife of 57 years, Mary Madeline White Dickerson; two children, Sarah Coburn, Donald Dickerson and wife Retta all of Princeton; three grandchildren, Renee Pennington, Danny Coburn and Donna Bradbury; six great grandchildren, Casey, Dustin, Emma, Alex, Kelsey and Makenna. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in the Garden of Ten Commandments on the Courthouse Road in Princeton. He graduated from Radford High School and proudly served his country during World War II in the 85th combat Eng. and the Korean War in the 2nd Infantry combat Eng. He was a Member of St. Judes Catholic Church of Radford and VFW Post #776. He is survived by his wife, Glada Dickerson Dulaney; goddaughter, Dr. Liberty Hall and her husband, Dr. Randy Hall, of Decatur, Ga.; brother-in-law, Hayden Dickerson, of Radford; sister-in-law, Goldie Dickerson, of Roanoke; and very special people in his life, the Boor family. Mrs. Dulaney would like to extend special thanks to his loving and compassionate care givers, David Gautier, Kim Hare, Judy Flinchum, Sue Shrewsberry and Brenda Dean. Quesenberry, Tuesday, (Feb. 2, 1936). (My note: I have seen the 12th also) after a brief illness of pneumonia. Her son, Alva Lee (3-30-1915/ 1-30-1936), 21 was ill and dying of pneumonia at his aunt's home when his mother, going to care for him, was taken ill, and followed him in death three weeks later. Another son, 12 years old, Ballard, Jr. (Ernest Junior, 7-20-1923-10-22-1935), died three months ago with the same disease. (Mrs. Altizer was born in Floyd County, VA, August 23, 1895, the daughter of Powhattan "Port" T. Dickerson and Mary Frances Duncan). Surviving besides her husband, are three daughters, two sons, and her parents.
