Ocie Underwood Sutphin, 92, of Meadows of Dan, died Friday, March 25, 2005.

She was the widow of Kyle P. Sutphin.

Surviving are three sons, Everett Sutphin of Laurel Fork, Glendal Sutphin of Collinsville and Jimmie Sutphin of Willis; a daughter, Shirley Turner of Woodbridge; a brother, Peerless Underwood of Fancy Gap; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Maberry Funeral Home chapel in Floyd. The Revs. Harold Fenstermaker, Joe Quesenberry and S.G. Bolt will officiate. Burial will be in the Underwood cemetery in Meadows of Dan.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

DAWSONVILLE, GA- Tellie Garst (Ted) Sutphin, 93, formerly of Floyd, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2007.

Mr. Sutphin was born in Floyd County, and ran Ted's Garage in Floyd for around 30 years.

He was a founding member of Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder.

He moved to Homestead, FL where he worked in real estate.

Upon his retirement, he moved to Dawsonville, GA.

Surviving are: his wife of 68 years, Cecile DeHart Sutphin, Dawsonville, GA; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Bobbie Sutphin, Dawsonville, GA; three grandchildren and spouses, Kathy and Dr. Jim Crews, Snellville, GA; Robin and Benny McDonald; Lawrenceville, GA; Dawn and Mike Kenney; Athens, GA; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Goldie Montgomery, Roanoke.

Funeral service was conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 6, at Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jim Crews officiating. Interment followed at Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family requests that contributions be made to Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church. Arrangements were handled by Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd.

Dr. Cecile DeHart Ayers Sutphin of Dawsonville, Ga., was born on March 25, 1921, and went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 6, 2011.

She was the loving wife of the late Tellie (Ted) G. Sutphin whom she married on September 2, 1938.

Cecile is survived by her son, Jonathan David Sutphin, of Dawsonville, Ga.; as well as her granddaughters, Kathy Crews (Jim), Robin McDonald (Benny) and Dawn Kenney (Mike); and greatgrandchildren, Katlyn Crews, Jamie Crews and Wesley McDonald. She is preceded in death by her mother, Phedetta DeHart; and her brother, Esley Ayers.

She was a teacher, department head and assistant vice-principal for South Dade High School in Florida for 30 years. She earned her Doctorate in Education. Upon retirement, she received a key to the city of Homestead, Fla. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, traveling, and collecting antique glassware.

Her family will receive friends and loved ones from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd. A church service to celebrate her life will be led by Dr. Jim Crews, 11 a.m. on Friday, March 11, 2011, at Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church with a graveside service to follow in Slate Mountain Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Embracing Hospice, 8013 Majors Road, Cumming, GA 30041. Don Sutphin, 81, died in Klamath Falls on July 31, 2008.

Don was born in Marlington, W.Va., on July 3, 1927, to Manual D. and Mini Dorris Sutphin. At the age of 5, he moved to Big Creek, Ore., and graduated from high school at Mrytle Creek, Ore. He then attended Oregon Institute of Technology, where he played on the basketball team and graduated with a degree in surveying.

It was there he met Gloria Wright and married her on Jan. 2, 1952, in Myrtle Point, Ore. They remained in Myrtle Point for about a year, then moved to Klamath Falls in 1953. He began working at KID, where he worked for eight years, then began the Williams Bread Route in Klamath Falls. After one year, he went to work for Weyerhaeuser Lumber Co., where he worked until retiring as a superintendent in 1983. He also helped with the family business Dave's Wholesale Candy.

He enjoyed being with his family, holidays and watching sports, especially the New York Yankees, Boston Celtics and Green Bay Packers. The family went on two special vacations to Hawaii. He was a former member of the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; sons, Dave and Dan Sutphin, all of Klamath Falls; sister-in-law, Evelyn Sutphin of Myrtle Point, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 11 brothers and sisters

Billy E. Sutphin, 81, died in Klamath Falls on Oct. 31, 2008. A service of Tribute and Love will be held at Eternal Hills Chapel on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at 10 a.m. Private family interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens.

Billy was born on March 7, 1921, to Margie Kellison and Claude Sutphin in Julia, W. Va. He was the third of seven kids. He grew up in that area, and while going to high school, he worked in the coal mines to help support his family. In 1945, he entered the U.S. Army where he served in Berlin, Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1947. He moved to Myrtle Point, Ore., where some of his relatives lived and started driving log trucks. It was there he met and married Gladys Evernden. They married in Reno, Nev., on Feb. 4, 1952. They moved to Klamath Falls where he drove for Greyhound Bus lines for a couple years before going to work for System 99. He retired from System 99 due to health reasons in 1974.
He enjoyed hunting, camping, and fishing in the Gerber area, and always looked forward to the family deer camp near Bly. He also enjoyed holiday dinners. Most of all he loved his family, his wife, children, grandchildren and his great-granddaughter.

He is survived by his son, Dallas of Klamath Falls; daughter and son- in-law, Janice and Mike Carter of Merrill, Ore.; brother, Carl Sutphin of Peterstown, W. Va.; sister, Enda Williams of Bluefield, Va.; brother-in-law and sister in law, Joe and Bonnie Evernden of Myrtle Point, Ore.; grandchildren, Justin and Luci Carter of Klamath Falls; Jeremy Carter of Tacoma, Wash.; Katie and Ryan Cavendish of Klamath Falls, great-granddaughter, Abigail Carter of Klamath Falls; special friend, Carlyn Hennecke of Klamath Falls; also, numerous nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sister, and his wife, Gladys in 1997.
Eternal Hills Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Edna Louisa Williams, 74, of 107 Fincastle Lane, Bluefield, Va., died Sunday, May 10, 2009 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. She was born in Smoot, W.Va. and was the daughter of the late Margie Bright Sutphin.

Edna was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va. She was a hairdresser and owned and operated the Beauty Time Salon in Bluefield, Va. for over 50 years. She was a 1951 graduate of Rainelle High School where she was a cheerleader, member of the National Honor Society, attended the West Virginia Governor's School for Girls, and graduated from the Little French Beauty Academy. She was also a member of the American Cancer Society Support Group, and she was also a great humanitarian.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her grandmother, Cora Kellison Peery; brothers, Bill, Dewey L., Earl, and Robert L. Sutphin; and a sister, Hester Jones.

She is survived by her husband, Thurman Wray Williams; daughters, Linda Williams Felts and husband Derrick, Princeton, W.Va., Cynthia Williams Owens and husband Mark, Bluefield, Va., Carol S. Williams Smith and husband Todd and their daughter, Abigail Nicole Smith, Bluefield, Va.; brother, Carl Sutphin and wife Joyce, Peterstown, W.Va.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va. with the Rev. Ray Amos officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Rodney Scott, Wayne Janutolo, Derrick Felts, Mark Owens, and Todd Smith.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, Va.

SUTPHIN, Garnie F., 83, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, April 14, 1994, at his home.

He retired from Vinton Weaving Mill after 42 years of service. He was a World War II combat veteran and received the Purple Heart.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Pollard Sutphin; a daughter, Sharon S. Brabham; a son, Charles L. Sutphin; three grandchildren, Brian J. Brabham, Laura Brabham, Scott Sutphin; one brother, Merle Sutphin; two sisters, Elizabeth Bowman, Teressa Dalton.

Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 11 a.m., Monday, April 18, 1994, with the Rev. Steve Witt of the Rainbow Forest Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Sunday and the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.

BOWMAN, Douglas Clay, 82, of Roanoke, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, went to be with the Lord, Monday, February 27, 1995, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Salem. He was an Army (Calvary), Navy, and Air Corps veteran. He was a member of the Honor Guard, who served at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in 1932. His last tour of duty was in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a retired sheet metal specialist with Owen Plumbing and Heating Company. Mr. Bowman served his apprenticeship under Arch Pugh of Danville. He was the last of his family, being preceded by five brothers and one sister; also, two daughters, Patricia Bowman Linkous, infant, Teresa Carole Bowman. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Sutphin Bowman, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret B. and George P. Curry, Salem, Linda B. Bray and John E. Thomasson, Axton, Rita B. and Edward W. Irving, Roanoke; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 2, at 12 noon at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Ken Butterworth of Rainbow Forest Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. For those who would prefer, donations can be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Clay Bowman; daughters, Patricia B. Linkous and Teresa Bowman. Surviving are daughters, Margaret B. Curry and Rita Bowman of Roanoke and Linda B. Bray, Glade Hill; nine grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild, 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Turessa Dalton of Danville; brother, Muriel Sutphin of Radford, and many special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, October 30, 2000 at Lotz Salem Chapel with Rev. Nelson Harris officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Muriel Clayton Sutphin, 82, of Radford, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2004.

He was a member of Carter Street United Methodist Church and retired from Burlington Mills.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Weeks Sutphin of Radford; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Kenneth Hawley of Radford; a grandson and his wife, Joshua Christiaan and Bridgette Hawley of Christiansburg; a great-grandson, Kody Christiaan Hawley; and a sister, Tressa Dalton of Danville.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home with the Rev. Layne Board officiating. Interment will follow in the West View Cemetery in Radford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Box 50, Memphis, Tenn. 38101. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James E. Wirt and her last husband, Elton Cundiff.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Lee Trent-Smith and nephews, Larry Trent, Ronald East, Stanley Graham; and a niece, Carolyn Caldwin.

She was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3, Roanoke, Va., the American Legion Auxiliary Post 3, Salem, Va. and a Woman of the Moose 1022, Salem, Va.

Mary Margaret East, 63, wife of Early East, of Dublin, died Wednesday evening from complications.

She had been in ill health for some time, but death came as a shock to her many friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Clyde J. Walsh at the Dublin Presbyterian church, of which she is a member, at 10 a. m., this Friday.

The deceased is survived by three sons, Freeman, of Dublin; Raymond, of Pulaski, and Buford, of Morrison, Va, and one daughter, Mrs. Eugene Frye, of Dublin, and several grandchildren.

The body will remain at the T. M. Seagle and Sons funeral Home until the hour of the funeral.

She was born to Arlon and Pauline (Poage) Lancaster on July 5, 1939, in Christiansburg. From her birth to her death, she nourished those around her with love. Arlie truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures – spending time with her children and grandchildren, chatting with friends, and working with her hands at Hardee's in downtown Christiansburg. She reached many in a deep and positive way. Arlie was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Sutphin; parents, Arlon and Pauline Lancaster; brothers, Eddie and Bill Lancaster; and son-in-law, Bobby VanDyke. Friel Allen Sutphin, 79 of Radford, was called to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 15, 2006 and to join his wife of 52 years, Lavenia Lucille Lester Sutphin who preceded him in death on April 7, 2006.

He was born in Floyd County on March 20, 1927 the son of the late Thomas Grayden and Minnie Pearl Akers Sutphin.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and Gary Hodge, and Bonnie and Michael Robinette, all of Dublin; three sons and daughter-in-law, Dale Sutphin of Dublin, Randal and Debbie Sutphin of Radford, and Merle Sutphin of Christiansburg; six grandchildren and their spouses, Carrie Hodge of Harrisonburg, Jeremy Hodge of Dublin, Andrea and Issam Abi-Saab of Harrisonburg, Miranda and Art Lucia of Aldie, Christina and Marco Ortiz Shaemaker of Germany, and Kara Sutphin of Radford; two great-grandchildren, Aidan Lucia of Aldie and Carolina OrtizShaemaker of Germany; four brothers, Draper Sutphin of Pulaski, MacArthur Sutphin of Pulaski, Carlos Sutphin of Christiansburg, and Franklin Sutphin of Dublin; and two sisters, Sibil Lester of Christiansburg, and Gwen Smith of North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 19, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with the Rev. Tom Rice officiating. Thomas Draper Sutphin, 87, of Bedford, formerly of Dublin, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Campbell Rest Home. He was one of nine children born to Thomas Grayden and Minnie Pearl Farmer Sutphin. He owned and operated Sutphin’s Welding in Dublin, Virginia for over 30 years and attended Peaks View Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Tommy Lee Sutphin; 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Mona and Randy O’Neill of Fla., and Wanda and Ronnie McGhee of Bedford; son, Terry Sutphin and Tammie of Newbern; granddaughters, Teri Lloyd and her husband Billy, Niki and her husband Eric, and Stephanie and her husband Jarrod; grandsons, Tommy Lee Sutphin II and Chris Travilion and his wife Amber; two step grandchildren, four great grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Cybil and Gwen.

She attended Shenandoah Baptist Church.

Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Sowers; daughter, Judith Marie Moore; son-in-law, Randolph Powers.

She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Patty and Pete Hite, Lynda Powers; five grandchildren, Stephen Powers and wife, Jenny, Michael Powers and wife, Frances, Jeff Powers, Christopher Moore, Emily Diaz and husband, David; three sisters, Frances Thompson, Custis Cliffton, Lillis Cruise; two brothers, Brown Sutphin, Wendell Sutphin; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Oakey's North Chapel with Pastor Don Eshelman officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
