JAMES PATRIC (SHORTY) ABELL, 91, passed away peacefully on Sept. 25 surrounded by his loving family. Shorty was born Dec. 10, 1916 in Paragould, Arkansas, to the late Emanuel and Ella Abell and was the second of nine children. Shorty served in the Army 3rd Infantry Division during World War II and earned 10 bronze stars for his service to his country. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Shorty came to Arizona in 1952 and became a meat cutter for Safeway Food Stores, where he met his beautiful wife Inez with whom he worked until his retirement in 1978. However, retirement didn't suit Shorty, so he started his own sharpening shop in his home, where he continued to work until a few weeks before his passing. Shorty is survived by his wife of almost 34 years, Inez; daughter Karan Gallagher of Coolidge, Ariz.; son Scott Abell of Victorville, Calif.; grandchildren Chris Fell, Cindy McGraugh, and Adrian Abell, along with several great-grandchildren. Shorty was blessed to have so many friends, and he and his sweet smile will be missed very much. Services were held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Arrangements are by David's Desert Chapel Funeral Home of Wickenburg.

SARAH "MARIE" ABERNATHEY of Congress, died Feb. 21 in Congress. She was 79.
Mrs. Abernathey was born June 1, 1917 in Arthur, Neb. She had lived in Arizona for the past 44 years.
Mrs. Abernathey moved to Arizona from Nebraska in 1953. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Congress.
Mrs. Abernathey started a cook shack for the miners at the Grand Canyon in 1956, and then started cooking at a cafe at the Grand Canyon. From 1970 until 1982, she owned and operated the 71 Cafe in Congress. She helped start the senior center in Congress, and home delivered meals.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Patricia Garvin of Kennesaw, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law Sheila and Morlan Wiman of Congress; stepdaughter and husband Ruth and Ralph Deffenbaugh of Chapala, Mexico; stepsons and wives Clyde and Evelyn Abernathey of Phoenix, Gayle and Marion Abernathey of Eugene, Ore., and Jack and Leila Abernathey of Hereford; brother and sister-in-law Edgar and Betty McMullen of Grand Island, Neb.; sister and brother-in-law Edith and Preston Stiles of Anaheim, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Brown's Wickenburg Funeral Home. The Rev. Carl Wiman, her grandson, officiated.
Burial was in the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery.

Hold Rites for Mrs. MARY ACTON
Funeral services for Mrs. MARY ALICE ACTON, 91, of Wittmann, were held in the Wickenburg Chapel at 2 p. m. Tuesday with the Rev., Bert FOLLMAR, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Wickenburg Cemetery.
Mrs. Acton died in Phoenix February 8.
Surviving is a son, Norman C. ACTON of Wittmann.

HAROLD R. (HAL) ADAMS of Wickenburg, died in his sleep at the Good Samaritan Hospital on May 3, 2001. He was 88.
Hal was born Dec. 8, 1912 in Illinois He had been a horseman from the age of 6, when he was a boy in Elgin, Ill. He came to Arizona in the 1930s and soon he knew the trails around Phoenix like the back of his hand. When the population started to grow rapidly, he knew something had to be done for the horsemen and hikers. They needed trails, so with his fellow horsemen a committee was formed in 1963. He headed the Maricopa Riding and Hiking Trail Committee, which encompassed much of the Salt River Valley. This was the largest project undertaken by the committee.
Hal was instrumental in persuading former Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall to permit riding and hiking along the stock driveways. He also marked the trail around 10 miles of the 50-mile driveway paralleling the Black Canyon Highway. The trail crisscrossed the old Black Canyon Highway and continued to the Prescott National Forest.
He was the original trail member of the old Horseman Posse, and a member of the Maricopa County Posse.
Hal was a director of the Verde Vaqueros, the first president of the Arabian Horse Association, and was president of the Western Saddle Club. Until his illness, he rode with the Desert Caballeros.
He served in the Navy during World War II, and was self-employed as a photo engraver.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Adams of Wickenburg; two daughters, Teri McCOY of San Diego, Calif., and Cathy EVANS of Glendale; six grandchildren, Chris, Peter, Paul, David, Carrie and Julie; and seven great-grandchildren.
Private services were held, with the State Commander of the VFW conducting graveside services at the St. Francis Cemetery in Phoenix.

MARK DAVID ADAMS of Wickenburg, died Dec. 27. He was 38.
Mr. Adams was a lifelong resident of Wickenburg. He was born here on April 12, 1962.
Mr. Adams was the owner of the Squash Blossom Nursery in Wickenburg.
Survivors include his wife, Becky ADAMS; children Jennifer ADAMS of Groveland, Calif., Justine ADAMS of Wickenburg and Zachary GRIFFITH of Eagle River, Alaska; parents Mitch and Delores ADAMS of Danielsville, Georgia; brother Bruce ADAMS of Kingman; and sister Shelley CHRISTIANSEN of Wickenburg. He is also survived by his aunts, Barbara Murray of Elephant Butte, N.M., and Sandra RUSSELL of Henderson, Nev.

On Thursday, April 15, 2004, WILLIAM H. ALLBRITTEN went to heaven. He had struggled with dementia/Alzheimer's after heart surgery in October 2003.
"Bill" is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne; his son, Dr. Drew Allbritten who is the Executive Director of the Council for Exceptional Children in Washington D.C.; and his daughter, Tamlin Allbritten, an Art Therapist at Remuda Ranch here in Wickenburg. Bill was born in Henry County, Tennessee in 1922. He was a U.S. Army Master Sergeant for the Military Police in World War II, serving four years all over Europe. He was active in the Shrine, the Masons, the Grotto and the American Legion. His occupation was Landscape Design, although his purpose in life was to be "a caring husband and father." A celebration of Bill's life will be held Saturday, May 1 at the Country Club Mobil Home Park in the club house, at 1855 W. Wickenburg Way at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to R&R Respite Care, 580 S. Mariposa, Wickenburg, AZ 85390. Rites Thursday for MRS. ALLISON
Funeral services were conducted in the Wickenburg Chapel at 11 o’clock Thursday morning for MRS. LIZZIE ALLISON who died in Community Hospital Tuesday evening. Dr. Charles S. Polling officiated. Cremation followed. On Monday the ashes will be taken to Spokane, Wash., where memorial services will be held after which burial will take place in Tekoa, Wash. Mrs. ALLISON was born in Tekoa July 11, 1884. She and her husband, W. S. ALLISON, moved from there to Wickenburg in October, 1950. They resided in a home they built at 205 Cucuracha in the Casandro Tract. Survivors include the husband; one son, George ALLISON of Falls Church, Virginia; one niece, Mrs. Mattie ASHLEY of Cheney, Wash.; three nephews, Bert SPENCER of Florence, Ariz., formerly of Wickenburg, Kendall C. MRS. MILDRED M. ALLUM, former Wickenburg resident, died November 21 in the Huntington Park, Calif., Community Hospital. Funeral services and burial were in Whitter, Calif. Mrs. Allum, who was born in Iowa, resided on the Phoenix Highway for four years where her husband, William A. Allum, operated the B. & M. Artcraft Shop. She is survived by her husband, now residing in Maywood, Calif.; a son William N. Allum of San Gabriel, Calif.; three daughters, Eleanor B. Hayden of El Monte, Calif., Elizabeth L. Grissom of Winkleman, Ariz., and Mildred D. Alderson of Sacramento; one brother, Dr. B. R. Miller of Monahams, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

Friday Services For WILLIAM AMOS
WILLIAM AMOS, 65, former Wickenburg resident, was found dead at approximately 6:30 p. m. Monday
in an ore conveyor belt at the Bagdad Copper Corp. mine in that town where he had worked for the past
16 ½ years. Cause of the death is being investigated.

Mr. Amos was born February 29, 1896, in Arkansas.

NOBLE ANDERS Killed In Car Wreck Monday
NOBLE ROY ANDERS, 19-year-old son of Mr. & Mrs. Houston ANDERS, and his friend, WILLIAM BRADLEY WILSON, Jr., 38, of Moab, Utah, were killed in a one-car automobile accident on Highway 180 about 27 miles north of Flagstaff Monday afternoon. According to Paul METZKE, half-brother of the Anders youth, the two men had apparently been in Flagstaff and were returning to Grand Canyon where they were employed by a mining firm. Highway Patrolman Roy LAMBERTSON was quoted as saying that he 1961 sedan, believed to have been driven by Wilson, apparently went out of control, left the road, flipped end over end for 264 feet, then flew through the air for another 144 feet, coming to rest in some trees. Both victims, he said, were found 125 feet from the wreck. Young ANDERS was born May 24, 1943, in Wickenburg and attended school here. He had recently been employed by the Western Golden Uranium Mining Co. of Grand Canyon. Surviving are the parents; a sister, Margaret; and two half brother, Harold Paul METZKE and Emery Arthur METZKE, all of Wickenburg. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday) in the Wickenburg chapel with the Rev. Robert JENKINS, past of the first Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Wickenburg Cemetery.

Father Killed As Car Left Highway East Of Wittmann
A California man became the fifth highway fatality of the year in the Wickenburg patrol area last Friday afternoon in a one-car accident five miles east of Wittmann on Highways 60-70 and 89. The dead man is VERNON R. ANDERSEN, 31, of Compton.
His wife, Marian, is in serious condition in Community Hospital here. Two daughters, Zoeanna, 5, and Shirley May, 3, were taken to Memorial Hospital in Phoenix, but their injuries are not considered serious.
Dozed At Wheel
According to Highway Patrolman George PEMBERTON, the Andersen family was traveling east about 3 p. m. when their station wagon left the highway, ran down into a wash and climbed an embankment. Mrs. Andersen told the patrolman she was driving the car, said she felt drowsy just before the accident and apparently dozed at the wheel.
Mr. Andersen was also taken to Memorial Hospital where he died of his head injuries a few hours later.

‘SLIM’ ANDERSON Rites in Wyoming
Funeral services were held in Riverton, Wyo., November 8 for ELMER R. (SLIM) ANDERSON former Wickenburg resident.
Mr. Anderson, 62 years old, spent several years here residing at the Shell Motel on the California Highway. He was once employed at Remuda Ranch and served as a cook for Las Damas on several of that organization’s rides. After leaving here, Mr. & Mrs. Anderson spent winters in Phoenix and their summers in Wyoming.

BETTY ANDREWS was born Jan. 28, 1933 in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to her parents Kenneth and Inez ROGERS. Betty and her husband Bob lived the first four years of their marriage in Wickenburg, Ariz., where he owned the Snowbirds Mobile Home Park and RV Supply Store. They then bought a home in Mobile Gardens in Wittmann in 1990 where they lived for the past 16 years.
Betty loved many sports and was excellent at basketball and bowling. She was an avid fan of both the Phoenix Suns and Diamondbacks baseball. She watched or listened to every game and kept records of all their wins and losses and playing statistics. Her life was prolonged beyond expectations by many prayers and her love of her sports teams. She also loved to play cards at the Mobile Gardens Club House. She spent many enjoyable hours doing yard work and was a true cat lover. She had eight at one time. She is survived by her loving husband Bob Andrews; her son Roger Dean DICKSON of Hot Springs, Ark.; stepchildren Sissom STEWART of Lancaster, Calif., Robert Owen ANDREWS of Mesa; sisters Georgia (OLNEY) STEWART of Hemet, Calif.; Evelyn WARREN of Hot Springs, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews as well as an aunt by marriage Virginia CUMMINGS of Phoenix. Betty passed away peacefully at the Hospice of Arizona on April 4 after a long battle against cancer. She will be sorely missed here on earth, but is now at home with her Heavenly Father. Memorial services were held Tuesday, April 10 at David's Desert Chapel in Wickenburg with Pastor Dean Stanley officiating. Burial will be at the Veterans Cemetery in Cave Creek.

Funeral services were conducted in Wenden at 2 p. m. Wednesday for MRS. ZUELLA ANDREWS of that town who died in Community Hospital here Monday afternoon. Burial was in the Wenden Cemetery.
Mrs. Andrews was born in Texas August 11, 1882, and had lived in Wenden for the past six years.

Armstrong Rites Will Be Saturday
Funeral services are tentatively set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the Wickenburg Chapel for Dr. WILLIAM B. ARMSTRONG of Morristown who died there Tuesday.
Burial will follow in the Wickenburg Cemetery with the Masonic Lodge officiating.
Dr. ARMSTRONG was 79 years old and had lived in Morristown for the past six years. He was the father of Mrs. Marie JOHNSON of that town.

GWENDOLYN C. ARLT, of Glendale and formerly of Aguila, died April 6 in Glendale. She was 90. Mrs. Arlt was born June 10, 1905 in Sioux City, Iowa; she had lived in Arizona for the past 33 years. Mrs. Arlt survived by three daughters, Arlene INGLEY of Farmington, N.M; Carole HOWARD of Klamath Falls, Ore. and Mary A. KENITZER of Peoria; a son, Gordon ARLT of Kennewick, Wash. and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchi1dren. Visitation will from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 10 at Brown’s Wickenburg Funeral Home, with Rosary at 8. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 11 at the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery. Fr. John VOGT will officiate. Brown’s Wickenburg Funeral Home handled all arrangements.

MARY ELLEN ARNELL of Wickenburg, died May 12 at her home in Wickenburg. She was 86. Mrs. Arnell was born Aug. 6, 1909 in Bethesda, Md. She had lived in Arizona for the past three years.
Mrs. Arnell was a retired nurse. In1937 she went to Alaska for the U.S. government as a nurse, working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She remained in Alaska to raise her family. She was appointed by President Eisenhower to the U.S. Bureau of Health for the Alaska health system.
Mrs. Arnell later began to visit the Wickenburg area, staying at the Remuda Ranch from 1955 on. She liked Wickenburg so much she made it her permanent home three years ago. Her hobbies included gardening, horseback riding and traveling. She was a past member of the Las Damas in Wickenburg. Survivors include two sons, Robert E. and Fedric C. Arnell; and a granddaughter, Rebecca A. Arnell.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 16 in the Wickenburg Funeral Home Chapel.
Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 5-7 p.m. at the Wickenburg Funeral Home.
Private cremation will follow the funeral services.
All arrangements were by Brown's Wickenburg Funeral Home.

EMMA MALVE STEIN ARNETT, of Wickenburg, died Jan.7 in Wickenburg. She was 91. Mrs. Arnett was born March 29, 1904 in Juneau, Wisconsin. She was a Wickenburg resident since 1946. Mrs. Arnett was a Supervisor for Michigan Bell Telephone Company in Bay City, Mich. prior to moving to Wickenburg. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Cutis and Carol ARNETT of Wickenburg grandson Jonathan ARNETT, a1so of Wickenburg; brother and sister-in-1aw Wesley and Rachel STEIN of Grosse Point Woods: Michigan; sister Arlene JOHNSON of Port Huron, Mich.; sisters-in-law Helen STEIN of Sun City and Rosemary STEIN of Midland, Mich.; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl ARNETT, and brothers Ewald and Lawrence STEIN. Grave side fami1y services will be held Saturday, Jan. 13 at 10 a.m. with interment in the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery. The Rev. W.W. HUTCHISON will officiate. Graveside rites were conducted Monday in the Mesa Cemetery for JOHN C. ARTHERHOLT who died in Wasco, California, December 27. He was the father of Mrs. C. M. BLAKELY and Mrs. Forrest HARROLL of Wickenburg. They together with Mr. Blakely, Mr. Harroll and Charlene and Paul BLAKELY of Wickenburg attended the rites. Funeral services had been held in Wasco December

Mr. ARTHERHOLT was born in Henrietta, Texas, July 30, 1883 and resided in Gilbert for many years. He moved to California 10 years ago.
Survivors include the widow, Maggie; three sons, Henry and Gordon of Earlimart, Calif., and Donald of Wichita, Kansas; and four daughters, Mrs. Francis STUBBS of Coolidge, Mrs. Pete MORAN of Wasco, Mrs. BLAKELY and Mrs. HARROLL.

RUBY F. ARTHURS of Wickenburg died July 30 at her home in Wickenburg. She was 80.
Mrs. Arthurs was born Feb. 12, 1916 in Dobbington, Ontario, Canada. She had lived in Arizona for the past 49 years.
Mrs. Arthurs was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Alvin D. Arthurs; and two brothers, Edwin and Kinneth Ash.
Survivors include her son Ronald of Skull Valley; daughters Doreen Hudson and Doris Newton, both of Wickenburg, and Dallas Arthurs of Prescott; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; brothers Ray, Keith and Ralph Ash of Canada; and sisters Nellie Hornsby, Mary Guest, Lillian Bellamy and Marjorie Reynolds, all of Canada.
Mrs. Arthurs was a long-time member of the Hilltop Community Church, the Dorcus Society and Bagdad Lioness Club until retiring in Skull Valley. She joined the Skull Valley Bible Church, where she attended until moving to Wickenburg nine years ago.
Mrs. Arthurs loved to cook and was known for her hospitality. She was a homemaker and was very family oriented. She will be missed by all her family and friends.
Visitation and funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Skull Valley Bible Church, the Rev. Jim Beasley and Rev. Dennis Fraser officiating. The burial was held at the Skull Valley Cemetery.

KING ATWOOD Is Injured As Car Wreck Kills Two
King Atwood, 17-year-old son of Mrs. Bob DYAR of Wickenburg, is back in school at Arizona
State College, Flagstaff, after escaping serious injury in an automobile accident in which two of
his classmates were killed and three others were injured. The accident happened Friday about
23 miles south of Flagstaff on Highway 89-A when, according to Highway Patrolman Ed SHORT,
the car in which the boys were riding hit a stone wall and over turned.
The two fatally injured were HAROLD JOE BEYARD, 22, of Seligman, and RUSSELL BRUNSON HICKS,
18, of Clifton. Hicks had spent the Washington's birthday weekend in Wickenburg as Atwood's
guest. Injured were Charles Richard SCHEIER, 18, of Morenci, John William BLEE, 20, of Miami,
and Atwood. The latter's injuries consisted of bruises on the head and one leg.
Mrs. Dyar received word of the accident from her son Friday evening and early Saturday
morning was flown to Flagstaff by Pete PETERSEN in his plane. Mr. Petersen went to Flagstaff
Monday morning and returned Mrs. DYAR to Wickenburg.

JOHN AUNAN Victim Of Truck Accident
Funeral services were held in Inglewood, Calif., last Saturday for JOHN G. AUNAN, 34-year-old
Wickenburg resident, who died August 30 from injuries received when the truck he was driving
turned over on Highway 66 about 8 miles west of Winslow the morning before. Burial was
in Inglewood.
Mr. Aunan, who had lived here for the past year and a half, worked for Blakely's and did some driving for Ruber, Arizona Refinery and Hadley. He was driving an Arizona Refinery truck from Salome to Winslow when the accident happened. Indications are that he may have gone to sleep or that he hit a soft shoulder. He was thrown from the truck, receiving a concussion. He died in the Winslow hospital.
Surviving are the father, John A. AUNAN, who resided with his son in the Wickenburg Auto Court; the mother, Mrs. Gena AUNAN of Los Angeles; a brother, Arny of San Diego; and a sister, Mrs. Dean POTTIER of Los Angeles. Kate YWANOW of Wickenburg attended the services.

RONALD LEE AUNGST, resident of Wickenburg, Ariz., died Thursday, March 6. Aungst and his wife Anita moved to Wickenburg in June 2000 following their retirement from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. At Sam Houston, Aungst was an associate professor of speech communication.
After moving to Wickenburg, Aungst, under the tutelage of the former Mayor Roach ROBERTS, was introduced to the vagaries of small town politics. Roberts appointed Aungst to be a commissioner on the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission. He followed that up by appointing Aungst to be one of the Commission’s representatives on the newly formed General Plan Committee.
When he was not reappointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission by a new mayor, Aungst set an independent course for himself criticizing the establishment which included the local Chamber of Commerce, the local newspaper, the developer/builder complex, and parts of local government. Aungst felt that the establishment had forgotten what Wickenburg stands for or once stood for. With all of their talk of preserving “Wickenburg….

Aungst was born Sept. 28, 1934, in Findlay, Ohio, to Norman C. and H. Oneita AUNGST. His degrees of Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Journalism was awarded by Ohio University. His Doctorate in Philosophy and Communication was awarded by Indiana University.
He taught in Montgomery County Schools, Ohio; Carthage College, Carthage, Illinois; Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana; as well as Sam Houston State University.
His resume also included being publisher and editor of Twin City Journal, Oak Hill Times, and Lee Paper in Indiana. He was also editor of the Tri-County Tribune in Arkansas.
The Presbyterian Church has been his lifelong religious preference and he has served the church as an elder, deacon, church school discussion leader and student.
In community affairs he has served on the boards of R & R Respite Center and the Wickenburg Community Services.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Anita, are his son Aaron and wife Lori HUDSON AUNGST of Humble, Texas; daughter Andrea AUNGST with John TOBIN of University City, Missouri; grandchildren Andrew, Ashley and Aaron John AUNGST and John and Jack TOBIN. Also surviving are his sister Pat Aungst of Bloomington, Ind., numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Memorial services for Mr. AUNGST will be Friday (March 14) at 4:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg. Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Deacon’s Fund, 180 North Adams Street, Wickenburg, AZ 85390; or to the Hospice of the Valley, 14066 West Waddell Road, Surprise, AZ 85379-8736.
Wickenburg Funeral Home has planned the services. Aungst body has been donated to Science Care Anatomical, Phoenix, Ariz. Graveside services at Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay, Ohio, have not been schedule at this time.

ROY A. AUSTIN, SR. of Congress, died Dec. 8 in Congress. He was 73.
MR. AUSTIN was born April 19, 1923 in National City, Calif. He had lived in Arizona for the past 13 years, coming from California. Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Congress.
