Read about the instructions published, and arrangements made, for this provision. Lists of registrants are shown by precinct for 1917, and as a single list for 1918.

 AYNES BROTHERS (hardware store) LEDGER

Information from the ledger of accounts used by the proprietors of Aynes Brothers Hardware, Furniture and Implements in the 1890's. This business, listed in the Business Directory for 1890, was operated by William and Andrew Aynes in Nemaha City, Nebraska. Readers may find their ancestors names here, and learn what they purchased that day.
A descendant, Tempe Berggren, has this ledger, and will respond to requests for possible additional information. Contact her at ttb@onlinemac.com

An additional find has been a photo of the Aynes Hardware, taken after the tornado. The date is approximately 1902. This was in the Earl Kerker collection, covered in the page on Nemaha Pictures from Early Days below, and can now be seen at the Nemaha Public Library.

  NEMAHA PICTURES FROM EARLY DAYS

We are very fortunate to receive these pictures, with descriptions of the date and other information from Earl Kerker. His relatives were business owners in Nemaha (village) and he lived there during part of his childhood. He can furnish names for most of those in these photos also.

  GEORGE A. CROW HISTORY

Vernon Hayes Cash has donated some very interesting pictures on three lines of his family, beginning with George A. Crow, an early Nemaha resident. Successive lines lead to the Ritchey family, also early residents in Nemaha County, and the Hayes family.

He says, "I became interested in my mother's family history after going through boxes of pictures and documents I had been trucking from place to place for thirty years. After a visit to my cousin's home in Lakewood, Colorado, where we went through the trunks and boxes she had from our grandmother - Elydia's - estate, my interest increased. Although my father's side of the family had been documented back to about 1690 by an aunt, I knew little about the Hayes/Ritchey/Crow lines."

"The pictures and documents which have been contributed to the Nemaha County files for the NEGenWeb are just a small portion of the interesting historical information which our family has for these ancestors."

THE BROCK NEWS & THE BROCK CHAMPION 1891-1897

An index and abstract for the Brock newspapers of 1891-1897.  Names in the news of the time, you will find tidbits about the citizens of Brock and surrounding areas.

 HILLSDALE PICTURES AND STORY

Connie Slagle Land has provided two pictures of her Slagle family and a building in Hillsdale taken around 1900. The building included a store and postoffice, and was the home of the Slagles as well.

On the back of the Hillsdale picture is the following: "Former Hillsdale Store and Post Office, served by Star Route between Nemaha and Barada, Nebraska. The Star Route came to Aspinwall, Hillsdale, St. Deroin and Barada. Barada is named after Antoin Barada, the son of a French nobleman and an Omaha Indian girl. He was born in 1807. Hiram Slagle had the store. Hiram Slagle, father of William Edward Slagle, his son Edward William Slagle, father of Edward Ankrom Slagle." A list of persons in the picture follows.

 THE WILSON FAMILY LETTERS

Glenn Wilson has found some family letters that have survived since the 1867 to 1869 period. These provide a view of personal history and the times in Nebraska. The writer, Glenn's ancestor, was a school teacher in the area of St. Deroin at the time the letters begin. He has recently begun tracing his family history, and would like to find out more about Bettie A. Tebbs, the writer of these letters.

DR. VARRO M. BOAL, NEMAHA COUNTY PHYSICIAN A CENTURY AGO

A Boal descendant, Steve Boal, has furnished two pictures taken about 1908 when Dr. Varro M. Boal was a physician in Auburn, Nebraska. For a peek inside of his office in those early days, look at this.

 BROWNVILLE, NEBRASKA: COMMEMORATIVE PLATE

Kenna Crabtree has shared a picture of a commemorative plate which was made for her grandmother, Mrs. C. M. Miner, by the Kettlesprings Kilns. It displays pictures of various historical buildings made in the early 1900 period.

Pam Rietsch, of Michigan, has put this phonebook online.  It used 3 digit phone numbers.  It seems to cover much of the county.

1927 Phone Book: Many names from Auburn, Brock, Brownville, Johnson, Nemaha, Peru.

Judy Swett scanned this phone book, it is on the Nemaha Co. site
