The following history includes two pictures that show a building in Hillsdale village. The Slagle family members operated a postoffice on one side, and a store on the other. It is believed that they lived on the second floor.

Persons have been identified in the Hillsdale picture left to right as: Dan Harger, his wife Catherine Slagle Harger, and James Slagle. The mailbox visible in the picture appears to have Harger on it. James Slagle fought in the Civil War with Company K, 39th Infantry, Illinois. The Hargers are buried in the Prairie Union Cemetery near Shubert.
