General guide:
The index covers all local names given under columns which were called Local News, Exchanges, or similar terms. The index also includes names from the State News column, since it reflected local counties and other areas of interest to local patrons. Local ads were indexed, generally on a quarterly basis, to reflect the business community at that time in Brock and the outlying area. Each issue was normally four pages, with pages 1 and 4 giving local news. State news was usually on page 2, column 1. The rest of the newspaper consisted of news furnished to the editors for publication. These cover state, national, and worldwide news items as well as ads, humorous items, and filler material. The latter were not included in the index.
The abstract follows general guidelines furnished by the Nebraska State Historical Society, for the Nebraska State Newspaper Project (NSNP) when they applied to an index of this nature.
Codes used for months were two-letter abbreviations: JA, FE, MR, AP, MY, JE, JL, AU, SE, OC, NO, and DE. This form of abbreviation is specified in the NSNP guidelines.
Spelling is given as the paper published it, for the most part. Where it differed within an article I used the one I believed correct. However, there were families whose names were not spelled as I would expect, and some editors possibly used what they thought was correct at the time. So individuals may be indexed under several spellings or titles. Obvious typographical errors were not perpetuated.
I have made one-line abstracts for the names indexed. Unfortunately, due to lack of space, some interesting material could not be included. Those interested in viewing the newspapers on film should be aware that the complete microfilm is available at the Nebraska State Historical Society, 1500 R St., Lincoln, NE 68501, and also at the Auburn Memorial Library, 1810 Courthouse Avenue, Auburn, Nebraska 68305.
A copy of this index will also be furnished to the Nemaha County NEGenWebpage. That can be found at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nenemaha for those using a computer for on-line research.
The Nemaha Valley Genealogical Society will also maintain a copy of the index and abstract. The Society is located in the Nemaha Valley Museum, Inc. in Auburn, Nebraska. The mailing address is PO Box 25, Auburn, NE 68305-0025.
Comments:
In every index and transcript there will be human errors and omissions. If readers will advise me of those they find, I will be happy to issue a correction in the future. This issue supersedes the index and abstracts previously published by year in June and July, 1997. Any copies of those may be discarded.
I hope to continue to index and abstract subsequent rolls of film which cover the newspapers of Brock, Nebraska from 1898 to 1944. It is not a speedy process, so I will probably not be finished for some time. Eventually, there should be a record for descendants to view which will guide them to news of their ancestors or relatives for those early years.
