THE AYNES FAMILY LEDGER

Aynes Hardware Store, Nemaha, NE
Transcribed by Tempe Taylor Berggren, Sheridan, Oregon

This old ledger was found in a cedar chest belonging to my husband's mother, Louella Veach Berggren. Her mother, Mary Catherine Aynes Veach, had used the pages to paste and store recipes she collected. The names of customers and items purchased have been transcribed from the remaining pages of the ledger. Perhaps some of you will recognize family members or gain a glimpse of the lifestyle and activities in and around Nemaha City, Nebraska in 1889-1890. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have.

A bit of family history ...

William Aynes, b. 1836, Greenfield, IN married Josephine Rice, b. 1832 IL, in 1858 Dry Creek Twp., Maries County, MO.  William Aynes died in Crab Orchard, Johnson County, NE in January 1902 at the home of his daughter, Mary Aynes Veach, my husband's grandmother.  His remains were taken by train to Verdon, NE, but the Nemaha newspaper article did not say where he was buried. They had the following children: John, b. 1859/60 MO, Mary, b. 1861, Joplin, MO, m. James Monroe Veach; Clara, b. 1863, MO, m. Alonzo Bobbitt; Jane (Jenny) b. 1866 NE m. Gus Nordling; Emmaline, b. 1867 NE, m. Oliver Adams; Grant, b. 1869 NE, m. Anne Quiggle from Shubert, NE; Andrew Festus, b. 1875 NE, m. Marian Irwin. Josephine died in 1877.

We have a copy of correspondence from William Aynes to his daughter Emmaline, dated 1901 from Brownsville, NE.  Mary and Jim Veach lived on a farm in Virginia, NE and had the following children: John, Ray, Frank, Louella, and Sadie (died in infancy). Louella Veach graduated from the Normal School in Peru, NE and taught school until 1924 when she married Victor Berggren of Aurora, NE. Louella and Vic Berggren had three children born in Nebraska:
James Myron Berggren, b. Jan. 17, 1927, d. Jan. 5, 1996;
Norman Gene Berggren, (my husband) b. March 25, 1936; and
Sheila Ann Berggren, b. March 23, 1940.
