STAFFORD COUNTY
MEXICAN WAR VETERANS
On May 13, 1846, Congress passed and President Polk signed a bill that acknowledged that a state of war already existed between the United States and Mexico. The war ended on May 30, 1848 when the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo went into effect. The United States added a half million square miles to its territory. It was the "Manifest Destiny" of the United States to control the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Two men from Stafford County fought in the Mexican War.
