STAFFORD COUNTY

CIVIL WAR VETERANS

Researched, written and contributed by: Homer Musselman

The Stafford County Court Records for the session of the County Court of Stafford held at the Lacy House on March 15, 1865 states that 1,000 Staffordians served in the Confederate armed forces. This is a remarkable number. The Stafford County white population in 1860 was 4,918 people. Therefore, 20.3% of the total population served in the armed forces.

Most of the men served in the 30th Virginia Infantry, 47th Virginia Infantry, 9th Virginia Cavalry, Fredericksburg Light Artillery, or the Stafford Light Artillery. H. E. Howard, Inc., Lynchburg, VA has published books on these units as part of the Virginia Regimental Series. These books include the service records and some genealogical information on these men. As a result, this information has not been repeated in this roster. The individual seeking information on these men can refer to these books or refer to the Compiled Service Records at the National Archives.

The 1910 census for Stafford County was the first U.S. Census that recognized that Confederate Veterans existed. Some men have been added to the roster based on the 1910 Census.

JONES, POWHATAN 47th Virginia Infantry

JONES, RICHARD MONTGOMERY 9th Virginia Cavalry

JONES, SAMUEL HOUSTON - Samuel Houston Jones was a merchant from Stafford County, Virginia.  He was married to Mary Catherine Barbee.  His parents were Garrison and Martha Houston Jones from Moundsville, West Virginia.  Samuel started his military service in the Spring of 1862.  He served between then and June 20, 1865 in Civil War-Company H, 15th Virginia Calvary, 7th Division.  Close to a year and a half into his service Samuel Houston Jones was captured by the Union in Virginia.  He eventually ended up at a prisoner of war camp where he remained until after the end of the war.  Samuel Houston Jones was the brother of Confederate General Alexander Caldwell Jones of the Army of Northern Virginia who in his post-war years was a diplomat to the U.S. Consul in Japan and China.  His other brother was Steamboat Captain Isaac Hardin Jones.  Submitted by:  Katherine Jones Dimmett

MASTERS, WILLIAM Pvt. Co. I, Provisional NY Cavalry (16th NY) Enl. 17 May 1864 Discharged 21 Sept 1865. His discharge states he was born in Washington, DC, 21 Yrs old, 5' 7-3/4" tall, dark complexion, brown eyes, dark hair, laborer. Glenn E. Hyatt furnished the information on William Masters. Glenn said that when William Masters "returned home to Garrisonville he placed a claim with the US Government for damage caused to his property by marauding US troops. Even though he served well with the US Cavalry and testified to his loyalty to the Union, he was denied compensation. The reason being the Federal Bureaucrats felt he couldn't make up his mind which side he was on."
