SHANK, Evelyn Light, 97, the widow of Tonsa Shank, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at the home of a grandson in Simpsons. She was born October 18, 1903, in Simpsons, Floyd County, a daughter of Brownlow and Ardella Prillaman Light. Her father was a teacher in the early public schools in Locust Grove District and later postmaster at Simpsons. In 1923, she married Tonsa Shank, whose home was a few miles from Simpsons. The couple lived in Columbus, Ohio, Roanoke, and Simpsons before settling in 1948 at Mr. Shank's homeplace.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978 and by brothers Binford, Julian, and Harris Light; sister, Corinne Light McNeil; and grandson, Larry M. Kesler. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sadie L. and Charles Benn, Alexandria; son and daughter-in-law, David and Phyllis Whitlock Shank, Arlington and Check; sister, Christine Vest, Simpsons; brother, Ralph E. Light, Rochester, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Rodney L. Kesler, Simpsons, Eric I. Shank, Arlington, Jennifer E. Monma, Honolulu, Hawaii, and John T. Shank, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and four great grandchildren, Matthew Kesler, Tanya Kesler, James Shank, and Daichi Monma. Graveside services will be at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, on Monday, April 9, 2001 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lane Spiegener officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday and Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd. Arrangements by Wood Funeral Home, Floyd.

LIGHT, Minnie Basham, of Christiansburg, passed away Friday, March 6, 1998 in Montgomery Regional Hospital. The daughter of the late Brainard H. and Olivia Stewart Basham, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Harris H. Light, one sister, Beulah B. Brammer and a brother, Earl S. Basham. She is survived by sisters, Thelma B. Charlton, Christiansburg, Katherine B. Link, Roanoke, Mary B. Epperly, Floyd; one brother, Gene Basham, Bluefield, Va.; sisters-in-law, Lois Basham, Christiansburg, Christine L. Vest, Check, Evelyn Shank; a brother-in-law, Ralph Light; her loving dog, Sherry; caregivers, Donna Prescott, Jennie Harris and Nellie Breeden and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Fred Austin, with burial in Sunset Cemetery. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Pilot United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home. There will be no evening visitation. Richardson-Horne Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

LIGHT, Percy Clinton, (Perc), 97, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2003. He was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Jasper and Lillian Light, and was also preceded in death by his sister, Deita Conner and his brothers, Jack Light, Paul Light, and Newton Light. He was also preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Pauline Mason "Polly" Light. He is survived by his daughters, Susan Evans Light of Christiansburg, Jean Light Willis of St. Augustine, Fla., and Julia Light Jowers of Charleston, S.C. Also, a very special daughter, Vanessa Gayle Holman of Christiansburg. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brothers, F. Day Light of Roanoke and William Moore Light of Richmond, Va. He will also be missed by his cats, "Maggie" and "Possum"; and his special friends, Carolyn Meredith and Mary Ellen Keller, both of Roanoke, John and Betty Wassom and family of Richmond, Va. Mr. Light was retired from the N & W Railway and helped to organize and served with the Williamson Road Rescue Squad. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II after receiving training at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He was attached to the 3 R D Marines and served in the South Pacific. Percy was an avid outdoorsman and wrote many stories and poems about all of his adventures. He was so loved by everyone that knew him for his amazing spirit and joy of life. He made all of our lives so happy. He loved and will be missed by so many friends. The family will be celebrating his life with visitation at Oakey's South Chapel from 12 noon Wednesday, September 17, 2003, until 2:30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. Dr. Harry Y. Gamble will officiate. Flowers will be appreciated and memorials may be made to the Cave Spring Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 20181, Roanoke, Va. 24018-0019. Floyd Day Light, 97, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, December 20, 2007. He was born in Floyd County, Va. on March 16, 1910. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Montez Wood Light. He was a former employee of Shenandoah Life Insurance Company with 45 years of service and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He is survived by his son, David A. Light, Lynchburg, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Anna Mae Smith. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2007 at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Sherwood Memorial Park at 11 a.m. Monday, December 24, 2007, with the Rev. Donna Hopkins Britt officiating.
