2003 Death: 2-20-2003 Radford VA.

2003 Obit: Roanoke Times, The (VA) - Sunday, March 2, 2003 (src: GenealogyBank.com)

SHE WAS DEDICATED TO HER CHURCH, FAMILY, FRIENDS OPAL CREWS 1921 -2003

People always came to Opal Harris Crews for advice, but she never gave them any.

She would make you a cup of coffee, cut you a slice of her homemade red velvet cake if you were lucky, and she would let you talk.

Whatever you decided, she supported you. That's the kind of person she was.

Crews succumbed to lung cancer on Feb. 20. She was 81.

Twice before, she beat cancer with her quiet persistence and her trademark determination.

It was this determination that helped her raise her siblings after her mother died in childbirth. And it was her persistence that helped found Gethsemane Baptist Church.

Crews was one of 32 charter members of the church, who had been meeting in a union hall in Christiansburg. Today the church has 400 members.

"She was always willing to do anything to help," pastor Jerry Gibson said. "She was a faithful tither, a faithful attender and she was faithful in prayer."

Gibson has known Crews since he was a teenager growing up in east Radford. In 1974, Gibson was in Bible college in North Carolina when Crews and the members of the fledgling church called him to be pastor. It's a post he's held for 29 years.

Crews was very active in her church women's circle, whether that meant cooking a dish or setting up chairs, Gibson said. And she dearly loved attending the women's Sunday school class.

Crews was born on an Indian Valley farm in Floyd County and grew up during the Great Depression. She had an impressive work ethic, working for 40 years at Burlington Mills before retiring in the mid-1980s.

Ethel Artrip took over Crews' job of "drawing ends" of nylon thread into a guide comb before it was woven into fabric. "She worked hard to get me that job," Artrip said. "She had a lot of patience with training me. I can hear her now, 'Ethel, you can do this.'

"She was a precious lady. I never met her that she didn't smile at me and give me a hug."

Crews was dedicated to her family and she taught her daughter and granddaughter the value of close family ties.

"I never felt like an only child," daughter Sandra Linkous said. "Our house was the hub of the family. It's where we all gathered."

And her sense of family didn't stop at blood lines. Eddie Linkous was Crews' son-in-law for 36 years. "Most people don't have a real relationship with their in-laws, but she did," he said.

Nobody knocked on Opal Crews' door; they didn't have to. They knew they could just walk right in and be welcomed, Sandra Linkous said.

And she was known for her gentle, quiet nature. "I saw her get upset sometimes, but I never heard her raise her voice in 36 years," Eddie Linkous said.

She modeled her strong faith in God for her family. "Whatever happens, you cope with it and make the best of it," her daughter said. "The Lord will never give you more than you can handle, that's what she said."

Crews was strong and independent, even near the end of her life. She would try to feed and make comfortable the hospice workers who came to care for her, Sandra Linkous said.

"I will miss her wisdom and just everything about her."
