Underwood, J. Asbury - Urbana Daily Citizen, Wednesday, 14
February 2007 J. Asbury Underwood, 86, of Urbana, passed away at 4:50 p.m.
Monday, Feb. 12, 2007 at Green Hills Center, West Liberty. He was born March 7 (sic), 1920, son of the late John and
Celia (Everingham) Underwood. He married Isabelle Dowdell in 1950 (sic) and she
preceded him in death in 1973. He married Alice Louise Ross Wanger in 1978 and
she also preceded him in death in 2004. He is survived by his children, Susan (John) Simon of West
Liberty, Sara (Jim) Thompson, John "Jeff" (Robin) Underwood and Jay (Penny)
Underwood, all of Urbana; 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren;
step-children Robert (Pam) Neff of Springfield, Pat (Karen) Wagner, Leo (Malia)
Wagner and Max Wagner, all of Urbana, and Robert (Joy) Dalles of Florida; 10
step-grandchildren; and a brother, Mark (Mary Laine) Underwood of Botkins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Max Underwood. J.
graduated from Westville High School in 1938 and attended adult classes at
Wittenberg University in Springfield. He was a life-long farmer and Champaign
County Treasurer for 28 years, and he worked for the Ohio Department of
agriculture. He was a member of the Westville United Methodist Church. He
was also a member of the Farm Bureau and the Ohio Nut Growers Association. In
previous years J was a member of the Champaign County Board of Elections. His
hobbies were reading, planting and grafting trees, traveling and woodworking. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007 in the
Atkins-Shively Funeral Home, 216 S. Springfield St., St. Paris, with Rev. Alice
Kay Hoover presiding. Burial will be in Nettle Creek Cemetery, Urbana.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2007 in
the Atkins-Shively Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Caser
Association of Champaign County, P. O. Box 38125, Urbana, Ohio 43078. Envelopes
will be available at the funeral home.
ULLERY -- ST. PARIS NEWS-DISPATCH, Thurs.August 24, 1944
Pfc., Charles ULLERY, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter ULLERYof Christiansburg,
has been reported killed in action in the Burma theater on July 27th. He
was inducted into service in February, 1943, and after training in this country
was sent to India, then to Burma.
Surviving are his parents; a sister Mrs. Pauline COLLINS of Christiansburg;
two brothers, Burney ULLERYat home and Herman ULLERYA. M. M. 2/C in the Naval
Air force at Traverse City, Mich., and a half brother Sgt. Kermit BAKER,
somewhere in Italy.
