BROWN, DONIVAN, DONOVAN, DUGAN, FISHER, GRIER posted by Genelle Starbird on Tuesday, February 11, 2003

My Gr Gr Grandparents Bartholomew (1840 - 1899) & Ella Rachel (Dugan) (1847 - 1920) Donovan were married in VA, moved to MO about 1865. After November 1867, they moved to Omaha, NE. By the time the 1880 census was taken, they were living in Colfax Co., NE. (On the census their surname was spelled DONIVAN). Together they had 11 children: John William, Clara Belle, Ella, George Washington, Charles Lee, Annie C., Adale J., James Bartholomew, Sophronia Frances, Carolyn Ellen and Grover Cleveland. John William was born in MO and all the rest were born in NE. Both Bartholomew and Ella Rachel were buried in the Schuyler City Cemetery.

My Gr Grandmother Adale J. Donovan married Arthur James Grier. They too lived in Colfax County and raised their 7 children: Luella Emily, Lottie Belle, Aubrey Jennings, Arthur Albert, Harold Addison and Dorothy Louise.

My Grandma Luella Emily Grier married Franklin Leslie Brown, son of Charles Brown and Caroline/Carrie/Carry Fisher Brown.

I would love to hear from anyone who has any of the above names in common so we can share information.

Seeking information on Joseph Vasicek/Vousicek, wife Anna, daughter Mary. Joseph & family were living in, around or near Howells in 1916. Joseph was a photographer, probably a hobby for him, although I have photographs bearing his name, written likely on the negatives before prints were made. Photo's do not appear to be cabinet-type, mainly snapshots taken with a photographer's eye. Joseph took pictures of my great grandparents, quite a number of them. They must have either been VERY good friends or a relative of some sort, though I can not place him in any lines I research. And my great grandparents did not live anywhere near Howells. They did live in Cuming County, between West Point and Oakland in Burt County. Seeking information about Joseph & his family. Thank you for taking the time to read my query.

TONCRAY, VANDEVERT posted by Evan Crowther on Saturday, February 22, 2003

I am searching for information on Magee and Minnie TONCRAY who are listed on the 1870 U.S. Census living in Colfax County, Nebraska. It appears the Isaac Albertson family is living with them. I know that Magee and Minnie were married 8 Nov. 1868 in Fremont, Nebraska. The 1880 census lists them living in Fremont, so perhaps they didn't live in Colfax County too long. They were the parents of two children, Maud and one other. I would like to know if the children were born in Colfax County or Fremont. I have traced Maud to California. Minnie was living with her in California in the 1900 census where it lists Minnie as the mother of 2 children, 1 living which is Maud. I would like information on the other child. Where was it born? Was it male or female? Did it die as a baby or small child? There was also a Benton TONCRAY listed on the 1870 Colfax County census. How was he related? Next on the 1870 census is Cora VANDEVERT who I know is a sister of Magee's. What happened to her husband, J. M. B. Vandevert? Any information on the TONCRAY or VANDEVERT families would be appreciated.

ØSTERGAARD, JØRGENSEN posted by Michele McNabb on Tuesday, May 6, 2003

Am looking for later whereabouts of two Danish immigrants, who stated in their 1889 emigration contracts that they were coming to Schuyler, Nebraska: Maren Poulsen ØSTERGAARD (b. 1866) and laborer Hans Peter JØRGENSEN (b. ca. 1865; not to be confused with a Nels Peter Jorgensen buried in the Danish Cemetery). They may have married, but I did not find their names in the online marriage lists or in any other of the online Colfax Co. databases. Is there any nearby locality where there was a population of Danish speakers? I am doing research for a gentleman in Denmark who does not speak English.

BROWN posted by Kenneth Vogt on Monday, September 29, 2003

My ancestor, Charles Fowler BROWN and his brother Oscar BROWN were both listed as living in Schuyler, Colfax County, Nebraska. This information was discovered last summer when I found the September 25th. 1882 last will and Testament of their father Isaac C. Brown of Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County, New York. In this will, Charles F. Brown was named as the Executor of Isaac's property. Charles did return to Chautauqua County and then back again to Colfax County.

According to a census of Colfax County, date unknown, Charles was listed as a Civil War veteran who served in Company F. of the 9th New York Cavalry. He was wounded August 1, 1863, during the Battle of Brandy Station, Virginia. This battle involved the largest number of Calvary Units that ever engaged in hostilities on the North American Continent.

At some point, Charles Brown moved to Santa Barbara, California and died there March 1928.

My query is for any descendants of Charles or Oscar Brown who might shed light on his activities in Colfax County. Please contact me for additional information. Kenneth L. Vogt

WYNNE posted by Michael D. Wynne on Tuesday, December 30, 2003

My great grandfather walked out on his family when my grandfather was a very young man. We have lost our family history with that act. His name was Edmund Henry WYNNE, and I am fairly certain he lived in Schuyler at least from 1916 to 1920. He married Helen Adkisson and bore Dorothy Wynne in 1916 in Schuyler and Edmund Henry Wynne in 1920 in Schuyler. I see a draft record for an Edmund Wynne in Schuyler for 1917 which is also consistent. How do I acquire information on who his parents were?? We are trying to pull the thread on the Wynne family line.

WEGENER posted by Rebecca Hartman on Monday, January 12, 2004

I am looking for any information on the Langhorst family. My great-grandfather was named Henry and his wife's name was Helen (Lena). They had 9 children. Their oldest son was named Henry. The daughters were Elizabeth (Heimann); Catherine (Wegener); Helen (Deiter or Dieter); Anna; Bertha; Frank; Joe and Mamie. Frank, Joe and Mamie were triplets who never married. Catherine Wegener was my grandmother. I would really appreciate any information about the Langhorst family.

I believe my grandfather's family (Wegener) also lived in Colfax County. My grandfather was named Theodore Wegener and he had a brother named Conrad. He had 6 sisters, but I do not know any of their names.

Any information about them would also be appreciated.

I have an obituary written in the Czech. language for a Vaclav Kvetensky who died the 25 ?/? 1941. I believe he was born in Policka Czek. in 1871. It looks like the names of his children were Emilie, Ladislav, Anna (Lowder) Josef and Marie. I do not read the language. It has a heading of "Clarkson, Nebr", so I am assuming he died there. Any information on this obituary, the family or descendants is very much appreciated.

SEFCHIK, SEFCIK, SHEFCHIK, VALENTA, WALENTA posted by Jim Steinberger on Saturday, April 2, 2005

Greetings from Wisconsin, I am doing some research on the Valenta family from Cermna, Bohemia who originally moved to Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. My g.g.g.grandfather Kasper had two brothers who came with him. Kasper and Vaclav stayed in the Kewaunee County area, but a third brother disappeared. His name was Joseph Valenta (Walenta). He was born 9-27-1822 in Cermna, Bohemia. His wife's name was Eva Fischer. They had six children born in Bohemia. They lived in Kewaunee County during the 1870 census, but disappeared on the 1880 census.

I was doing some searching on the internet on the 1880. I found the following:

Felix SEFCIK Self M Male W 36 BOHEMIA Blacksmith BOHEMIA BOHEMIA
Margaret SEFCIK Wife M Female W 28 BOHEMIA Keeping House BOHEMIA BOHEMIA
Annie SEFCIK Dau S Female W 9 NE BOHEMIA BOHEMIA
Emma SEFCIK Dau S Female W 7 NE BOHEMIA BOHEMIA
Victoria SEFCIK Dau S Female W 5 NE BOHEMIA BOHEMIA
Felix SEFCIK Son S Male W 4 NE BOHEMIA BOHEMIA
Joseph WALENTA FatherL M Male W 64 BOHEMIA At Home BOHEMIA BOHEMIA
Eva WALENTA MotherL M Female W 60 BOHEMIA At Home BOHEMIA BOHEMIA

First of all what is very intriguing is that Joseph and Eva Valenta (Walenta) had a daughter named Margaret. She was born 2-21-1852 at House #30 in Cermna, Bohemia. This would make her 28 years old during the 1880 census, which is what she listed her age as.

Secondly, there were SEFCIK's that were living in Kewaunee County at the same time and in the same area as the Valenta's. In fact, I have record of a FELIX SEFCIK, born 4-7-1844 at House #44 in Milavce, Bohemia. This individual would also be a extended cousin of mine.

It sure looks to me like this family moved to Nebraska from Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. If there is ANYONE in Nebraska that might know anything about this family, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
