Brenda Sue Edwards Austin, 69, of Elliston, gained her
wings on Friday, January 24, 2020.
Brenda is remembered for being a woman with a heart of gold. She was a
devoted wife, a loving mother, and a cherished grandmother. Her love for
people was unconditional, and without judgment. Her kindness knew no limits
and she would do anything she could for anyone, even if it meant that she
went without. Family was very important to Brenda, her most cherished times
with her family during Christmas. She loved to decorate the house and be
able to spend those precious moments with the ones she loved. Though her
time with family was cherished, her heart was her husband John. Twenty-one
years of love together, and spending they’re free time antiquing,
gardening, bird watching, cooking, and doing crafts together. Brenda was
beyond proud of her granddaughter for her upcoming high school graduation
and plans for college. She beamed with excitement at the mention of it. Her
legacy and love will be carried on by the ones she has left behind, and she
will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her father, James Riley Edwards.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 21 years, John Lee
Austin; Mother Texanna Herndon; Son Charles Martin Burris Jr.;
Stepdaughters Tracy Austin and husband Billy and Robin Goff husband Rodney.
Brother Robert Edwards and wife Betty. Sisters Peggy Hickson and husband
Bobby, Betty Dixon and husband Richard. Granddaughter Autumn Goff. Grandson
T.J Wilkerson.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, from 6 – 8
p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. A celebration of her
life will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, in the John M.
Oakey & Son Chapel. Interment will be held at Little Hope Cemetery

Texanna Blankenship Herndon, 96, of Dry Hollar, Salem,
VA, passed away peacefully and gained her angel wings on Monday, October
30, 2023, with her family by her side.
She was born to the late Crockett and Minnie Stuart
Blankenship on Saturday, April 23, 1927, in Branchville, SC. In addition
to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, James
Riley Edwards; second husband, Tindell C. Herndon; daughter, Brenda Sue
Burris; brothers, Junior Blankenship, and Melvin Blankenship.
Those left to cherish her memory include children,
Betty Jo Dixon, Peggy Ann Hickson, James Robert Edwards, and Tina
Christie Herndon; brothers, Mark Blankenship, Theodore Blankenship, Woody
Blankenship; sister, Mary Jane Blankenship Milton; eight grandchildren;
several great-grandchildren; as well as several
great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday,
November 2, 2023, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem,
with Pastor Clay Dalton officiating. Friends may visit with the family
from 6 p.m. until the hour of the service.
The interment will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday,
November 3, 2023, at the Little Hope Cemetery in Elliston, VA.

Velma Gregory Vaughan, 88, of Blacksburg, formerly of
Rocky Mount, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, December 17,
2015. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mahala Gregory;
husbands, Shannon Viars, John Edwards and George Vaughan; brothers,
Clayton, Chester, Collin, Verlon; sisters, Edith Crigger, Thelma Lindsay;
and step-children, Barbara Stump, Drucilla Spraker, Judy Switzer, and
Randy Edwards.
Velma is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Edwards, Fran Fields and
husband Barry, Sharon Ferrell and husband Paul; grandsons, David Fields
and wife Heather, Kevin Fields and wife Shanna, Christopher Ferrell,
Patrick Ferrell; great-grandsons, Benjamin, Jeremiah, and Joshua Fields;
step-children, Audrey Ellis, Linda Concetto, J. P. Edwards; as well as
step-son-in-law, Carl “Jack” Stump.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 20, 2015, from 2-3
p.m., with the Funeral Service to begin at 3 p.m. at the Rocky Mount
Church of Christ, 39 Woodman Road, Rocky Mount, VA 24151. Interment will
be private.

Ralph
Bennett Gray, age 81 of Pulaski, born April 5, 1937 was called to his
Heavenly home suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday March 7, 2019 at
Lewis Gale Hospital – Pulaski. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army.
His love of bear hunting, striper and trout fishing as well as camping
led to him being known and respected all over Virginia. Leading to
lifetime friends as well as frequent new and immediate friends after
moving to Pulaski in 2012. He spent most of his working life as a
Supervisor and project manager for J.M. Turner and Son in Roanoke,
Virginia which left him with a love of golf and pride in all the projects
he oversaw throughout the Roanoke and New River Valley highlighted by
many rebuilds and renovations at Lewis Gale Salem hospital and the Salem
Jail. He was predeceased by his Mother, Elizabeth “Zanie” Dooley Gray,
Father, Brud Gray, Brothers, Johnny Gray and Paul “Buddy” Gray (Dot),
late wife, Barbara Gray, stepsons, Vincent Bailey and Mark Bailey
(Maria), and step grandsons, Joshua and Kevin Bailey. Ralph left behind
his loving wife and best friend Amy Jones-Gray, Mother in law, Dorothy
“Nana” Sanchez, step children, April Reed (Denton), Glendon Jones
(Jessica), Matthew Jones (Aili), Jr. Bailey (Melissa), and Rhonda Melton
(Roger). Ralph was a devoted and loving “Papa” Ralph to Cheyenne,
Braxton, Charlie Mae and Kinsley as well as numerous other loved step
grandchildren and great grandchildren. His stories will continue to be
told by his bear hunting “buddies”, Don Melton, Eugene Yopp, Terry Hale
and Robbie, Dylan and Megan Templeton. His fishing, camping and life
“buddies” Sandy and Doug Eastep, Ricky Thomas, Marvin Edwards, Thomas
Tabor, Robbie Gray, Preston Gray, Matt “Monk” Holbrook, the Golden Years
Bowling League and many other bowlers at NRV Superbowl. He had recently
joined the Dublin Lions Club and immediately felt a very special and
appreciated comradery and passion for the members. Funeral services will
be Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Olivet United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Judy Yonce officiating. Interment will follow in the
Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery with military honors. Please feel
free to join friends and family to share a meal after the burial at the
Dublin Lions Club. The family will receive friends on Tuesday at Seagle
Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Dublin Lions Club.

Texanna Blankenship Herndon, 96, of Dry Hollar, Salem,
VA, passed away peacefully and gained her angel wings on Monday, October
30, 2023, with her family by her side.
She was born to the late Crockett and Minnie Stuart
Blankenship on Saturday, April 23, 1927, in Branchville, SC. In addition
to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, James
Riley Edwards; second husband, Tindell C. Herndon; daughter, Brenda Sue
Burris; brothers, Junior Blankenship, and Melvin Blankenship.
Those left to cherish her memory include children,
Betty Jo Dixon, Peggy Ann Hickson, James Robert Edwards, and Tina Christie
Herndon; brothers, Mark Blankenship, Theodore Blankenship, Woody
Blankenship; sister, Mary Jane Blankenship Milton; eight grandchildren;
several great-grandchildren; as well as several
great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday,
November 2, 2023, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem,
with Pastor Clay Dalton officiating. Friends may visit with the family
from 6 p.m. until the hour of the service.
The interment will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday,
November 3, 2023, at the Little Hope Cemetery in Elliston, VA.

Elsie
R. Parrish, 97, of Elliston,was escorted by God's angels to heaven on
Thursday, August 28, 2014.
{REST} She was predeceased by her husband, Woodrow (Woody) Parrish, two
sons, and one granddaughter.
Elsie was a special Mom who loved not only her own children but all that
she met. Mama's love was tender, thoughtful but most of all a Godly love.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Lillian Worrell
(Portland);sons, Russell Parrish (Debra), Jerry Parrish (Trish) and Bobby
Parrish (Jeanne) and daughter-in-law Betty Parrish;eight grandchildren;
twelve great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Morris
Chapel, Rt. 460W, Elliston,at 2 p.m. with the Rev Eddie Booth
officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Interment will
follow in Little Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Parrish is entrusted to Valley
Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
