Lucas. 1812 Military: (src: Betsy Owen) During the War of 1812 Jacob answered the last call up of men from Montgomery County and went to Christiansburg and enlisted in Captain William Currin's Company of Virginia Militia. The unit left on foot, headed for Lynchburg where they would take a boat on the James River Canal to Richmond, and then continue to Norfolk. However, when they reached Liberty, (now Bedford) they met a runner bringing the message that the war was over. Born in Floyd County, Va., April 10, 1886, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John William Shelor. Mr. Shelor moved to this area from Blue Field, Va., 30 years ago. Until his illness, he was a yard engineer at Detroit Steel Corp, Portsmouth Division. Mr. Shelor was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Roote Shelor; two sons, Ralph of Phoenix, Ariz., and Donald of Cincinnati; two daughters, Mrs. Louise Bailey of Glendale, Ariz., and Mrs. Lillian Evans of Minford; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Rev. William Shelor of Phoenix and Paul Shelor of Mount Royal, Va.; and two sisters, Polly Shelor of Richmond, Va., and Mrs. Robert Havener of Blacksburg, Va., now traveling in Germany. Rev. Julius Chandler and Rev. William H. Sherertz will conduct funeral services at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Erwin-Dodson Funeral Home, Minford. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park. Virginia was born in Lansdale, Pa. She was the daughter of a Nazarene Church Pastor. After a few moves, the family eventually settled in Aberdeen, SD. Following her high school graduation, she moved to Omaha, Ne., but soon returned to Aberdeen to help care for her ailing father, a trait she would exemplify her entire life. While in Aberdeen, Virginia snuck off to a dance, up till then prohibited by her father, and met Wayne Decker, who being stationed in the United States Military, at California's Fort Ord, was home on a short visit. After corresponding for a year, a proposal and engagement ring arrived by mail, and in 1945, they were married. That marriage would last 56 years, until Wayne's death in 2001. Virginia loved playing golf at Sunnyside Country Club, where she and Wayne made life-long friends throughout their 40 plus years of membership. She won her fair share of trophies, at her best when the stakes were the highest. Virginia was an outstanding cook and liked nothing better than having the entire family around her. Virginia was a loving and devoted mother to her three children, Marcie Morgenstern and her husband Bill, Gary Decker and his wife Meredith, and Brian Decker and his wife Becky. Always there when needed, she would later become Mimi to grandchildren, Jeff Morgenstern, Amy Myers, Rachel Decker, and Megan and Shelby Decker; and great-grandchildren, Maya and Jackson Morgenstern and Hannah Myers. Rarely was there a weekend where she didn't call to insist on a night out so she and Wayne could babysit and spoil the grandkids. She is also survived by her sister, Edna Judy of Prairie City, SD. A Celebration of Virginia's Life will be held at Northwest Church, 5415 N. West Ave., on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the First Tee of Fresno junior golf program, 7492 N. Rev. Brad Burkhalter will officiate. Edna E. (Shelor) Judy was born on December 24, 1925, in Landsdale, PA to Rev. William D. and Mabel (Haas) Shelor. Her father pastored churches in PA, AZ, SD and MT and Edna's early life revolved around the church and especially the music of the church. She loved good books and spent many hours in the public library in Aberdeen, SD. She was a member of the Aberdeen Church Choir and the local high school girls acappella choir for two years. Her life was full of music, cantatas, solos and special group gatherings, especially a 5th Sunday Hymn Sing, which she would often participate in. Edna's mother passed away when Edna was two years old. Edna and her siblings were temporarily cared for by relatives.\Edna was moved to CA to stay with her mother's sister and family. In due time, William was remarried to Susie Bevard. Edna and her sisters learned to love and respect a "step-mother." She met James Judy at the Aberdeen Wesleyan Church and a courtship began. They were married on June
12, 1945. Following their marriage, they both enrolled in Marion College, the
Wesleyan Church school and continued until Jim's graduation in 1947. He was
ordained and Edna became a "pastor's wife" until 1995 when Jim
retired. Two children were born to this union, Stephen in 1952 and Joanne in
1956. They both have families and reside in California. Following Jim's retirement in 1995, Jim and Edna moved to Bison, SD, and began typing community news for the Bison Courier. They moved to the Tim
Brixey place and later moved a trailer house to the Judy Homestead near
Prairie City. Edna was a member of the Prairie City Wesleyan Church where she
was church organist for many years. She is survived by her husband, James Judy of Prairie City, SD; son, Stephen (Debra) Judy; daughter, Joanne White; grandchildren, Lynda Wynn, Heather Zachery and Adam White; one great-grandson, Zachery White; nieces and nephews, Gary (Meredith) Decker, Bryan (Becky) Decker, Marcie (Bill) Morganster, Jerry Biggers, Dennis Biggers, Mickey Biggers, and many friends and relatives. Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Nancy was born and raised in Floyd, Virginia, her home for life. She attended Mary Baldwin College. Nancy and her husband, William Henry Shelor, who predeceased her, had three children, Anne Shelor Hubbard, Rebecca Dudley Shelor, and William Henry Shelor Jr. She was graced with seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.The Shelor family members were active in the Floyd Presbyterian Church where Nancy taught Sunday school. She was a founding member of the Floyd Woman's Club and also belonged to the D.A.R. Nancy was committed to the Floyd Community and took part in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts and occasionally was a substitute teacher at Floyd High School. She and Bill loved to entertain friends and family and they also enjoyed travel. Graveside services will be conducted at a later date.
