In the name of
God, Amen. I, Isaac Holmes of Mecklenburg County being sick and weak but of
sound and perfect mind and memory, thanks to God for the same, but calling to
mind the uncertainty of life do make and constitute this my last will and
testament thereby revoking and disannulling all others by me made in manner and
form following , Vis:
Item: I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife
Lucy Holmes during her natural life or widowhood all my estate both real and
personal being of what kind soever and after decease or marriage in manner and
form as followeth, viz.
Item: I give my four sons Samuel Holmes, John
Holmes, Isaac Holmes, and David Holmes after the decease or marriage of my said
wife Lucy Holmes as aforesaid the tract of land whereon I now live containing by
estimation two hundred acres more or less to be equally divided between them
four as aforesaid their heirs and assigns forever.
Item: I give and
bequeath all the remainder of my estate after the death or marriage of my said
wife Lucy Holmes to be equally divided between all my children, to wit. Samuel,
John, Isaac, David, Sarah, Anne, Rebecca, (Lucy, Frances, Faitha, Mary, - names
unreadable, Elliot book gives missing names as Lucy, Frances, Faith, Mary)
Elizabeth & Martha to them and their heirs forever.
Lastly, I ___?___ my
beloved wife Lucy Holmes Executrix my __?__ friend John Ballard my friend
William Holmes as executors of this my last will and testament.
In
testimony whereof I have sworn under my hand and seal this 21st day of August

will and Testament of Isaac Holmes, Dec. was Exhibited into Court approved by
the oaths thru witnesses thereto Subscribed and ordered to be Recorded and on
the motion Lucy Holmes and John Ballard jr Executors therein named who made Oath
and entered into An Acknowledge Bond as the Law Directs Certificate is granted
them for obtaining a probat thereof in due form

In the name of God
amen I John Holmes of the County of Mecklenburg being weak in body but of sound
mind memory and understanding calling to mind the uncertainty of human life do
constitute and make this my last will and testament in like manner as follows, I
commit my soul to almighty God my Body to the earth to be decently buried at the
discretion of my executors.
Item I lend to my beloved wife Milly Holmes
during her natural life three negroes (to wit. Solomon, Sam and Harry at the
death of my wife Milly Holmes it is my will and desire the negro Harry above
mentioned should be sold on a credit of twelve months the purchaser giving bond
with security and the money arising from the sale of the said negro to be
equally divided among the heirs of my deceased brother William Holmes my other
two negroes Solomon and Sam to be sold in like manner as above mentioned and the
money arising from the sale of them, the to be equally divided between heirs of
my sister Polly Walker and the heirs of my half brother Blanton Cook.
Item I give to my wife Milly Holmes the land I now live on together with all my
stock. of every kind and all my household and kitchen furniture and all my Crop
that is now on hand.
Item I lend to by Brother William Holmes’ widow
Elizabeth Holmes during her natural life one negroe woman named Milly and for my
brothers widow Elizabeth Holmes to dispose of the said negroe Milly as she may
see cause among the heirs of my deceased brother
I appoint John Lambert
with my wife Milly Holmes as my only executors to this my last will and
testament as witness my hand and seal this eighteenth day of October in the year
of our Lord 1805

This will being produced
to Court for proof. On hearing the witnesses for and against its establishment
and the said will being proved by the oaths of Ameline Walker and Betsy
Abernathy witnesses thereto the same is ordered to be recorded and on the motion
of John Lambert and Milly Holmes the exec. & executrix therein named who made
oath thereto and together with John Turner Jr and Drury Turner their securities
entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of ten thousand dollars
conditioned as the law directs certificate is granted them for obtaining a
probat thereof in due form

In the
name of God amen I Lucy B. Holmes of the county of Mecklenburg and state of
Virginia feeling the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death do make this
my last will and testament to wit.
Item It is my wish and desired that
all my debts be first paid
Item I give and bequeath to Archer Jackson and
my sister Evaline F. Jackson his wife a negro girl named Mary for their
attention to me for several years the said negro girl is now in a bad state of
health and in the event that she does not recover her health or becomes
worthless it is my will and desire that they the said Archer Jackson and his
wife shall receive out of my estate two hundred dollars over and above their
proportion of my estate
Item it is my will and desire that Archer Jackson
will take my negro man Wiley at valuation and account to my executor for the
same either in cash or on 12 months credit.
Item It is my will and desire
that forty dollars of my estate be appropriated by my Executor towards railing
or walling in our family burying ground at Brother James Holmes when the
relations contribute the balance necessary to have it done in a neat and
substantial manner
Item It is my will and desire that the residue of my
estate with my interest in my father’s estate (Pennington Holmes) both real and
personal be divided into four equal parts as follows to by sister Besty J.
Fisackerly (?) and her heirs one fourth part to brother James Holmes and his
heirs one fourth part to Brother Sack P. Holmes children one fourth part and to
Archer Jackson and his wife and their heirs one fourth part..

oath thereto and together with James S. Moss and Robert B. Chappell his
securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $5,000.

property as my Executor may think proper

that all my property of any description be then kept together and I do hereby

my youngest child becomes eighteen years of age at which time I wish my wife
Susan F. Holmes to take her third and the balance of my property to be equally
divided among all my children

the property which my wife may have at her death belonging to my estate be
equally divided between all my children

on the 15th day of December 1845 the foregoing last will and testament of Sack
P. Holmes dec’d was this day returned into court proved by the oaths of R A

on motion of James Holmes one of the Executors therein named who made oath
thereto and together with R. A. Walker and John W. Simmons has severally entered
into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty $5000 conditioned according to

Lunenburg County, being in good health and sound mind and memory but calling to
mind the uncertainty of life and being willing to settle my worldly affairs, I
make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner and form
following, viz. First,
Item: I give unto my
son, Isaac Holmes, one shilling over and above what I have put him in possession
of.
Item: I give unto my daughter, Mary Lark, one shilling over and above
what I have left her in possession of.
Item: I give and devise unto my
son Samuel Holmes and his heirs forever all the remainder of my land that lies
on the same (side) of the creek where my said son Samuel Holmes now lives.
Item: I give and devise unto my son William Holmes and his heirs forever
after the death of my wife all the remainder of my land and the plantation
whereon I now live.
Item: I give and devise unto my daughter Ann Holmes
and her heirs forever the sum of fifty pounds current money of Virginia and the
bed and furniture where on I commonly lie to be paid and delivered to my said
daughter after the death of my wife and so forth.
Item: I give and devise
unto my Grand Daughter Elizabeth Pool 10 pounds Virginia currency.
Item:
I give and devise unto my above said son William Holmes and his heirs forever
after the death of my wife, my funeral charges, just debts and the above
legacies paid all the rest and residue of my Estate in whatsoever articles as
lieth or may be found and so forth.
Item My will is that my beloved wife
Ann Holmes have the use of all my Estate which I die possessed of after my
funeral charges and just debts paid during her natural life for reasonable
maintenance only with this reservation that in case my said wife should marry
then my will is that my son William Holmes have ameaditt (immediate) possession
of one negro man named Nick (?).
Lastly I nominate and appoint my son
Isaac Holmes and my son William Holmes Executors of this my last Will and
Testament In testimony whereof - - my hand and this my seal this - - ______ day
of September one thousand seven hundred and sixty two.

At a Court held for Mecklenburg County the 9 June 1766 this
last Will and Testament of Samuel Holmes deceased was proved by the oaths of
Henry Delony Gent. a witness thereto and ordered to be certified.
At a
Court held for Mecklenburg County the 14 July 1766 the Will was further proved
by the oath of Rebecca Delony another witness thereto and ordered to be recorded
sworn to William Holmes one of the Executors thereto named and on the motion of
the said Executor certificate is granted for obtaining a probate therein due
from herewith. Henry Delony his security entered into and acknowledges bond.

I Samuel
Holmes of the County of Mecklenburg & State of Virginia do make & ordain this my
last will & testament in manner and form as follows.
First. It is my
Will & desire that all my Just debts and funeral expenses be paid.
Secondly. It is my will and desire & I do hereby direct and empower my Executors
hereafter named to dispose of all my negroes to wit. Hannah, Harry, Mima, Hinton
& Isham together with all my other property as soon after my death as
conveniently may be at twelve months credit for hard money, taking bonds with
good security.
Thirdly. I give to my daughter Joyce Goode six shillings
Virginia currency.
Fourthly. It is my Will and desire that the money
arising from the said Sale or sales together with what money I may have on hand
and such sum or sums of money as may be due to me, as also all my property of
every sort and kind whatsoever may be equally divided between my six Children
hereafter named, to wit, Martha Lee, Elizabeth Warren, Anne Hundly, Sarah Reeks,
Mary Fox, and Susanna Baskervill.
Fifthly. and whereas it is probable
that my daughter Elizabeth Warren may die without issue, It is my will and
desire that her share of My Estate which is before devised her Shall return to
such of my Children as are hereafter named, to wit, Martha Lee, Anne Hundly,
Sarah Reeks, Mary Fox and Susanna Baskervill to be equally divided between them
or the representatives of such as may be dead, in case she should not have Issue
and therefore I direct my Executors when they Pay her legacy aforesaid to take a
bond with Security for the same to be returned agreeable to this my Will not
meaning that she shall be accountable for interest upon the money she may
receive.
Lastly. I do hereby appoint my Nephews Samuel Holmes, John
Holmes, & Pennington Homes Executors of this my last will & testament hereby
revoking all others by me made,

raise all my Children on that shall be after named all that Tract or Parcel of
Land I now live on also the use of Seven Negroes namely Sarah, Lydia, Ben, Sam,
Mimi, James and Dolley with all their increase also one Horse also all my
household and kitchen furniture all my Stock of Cattle Hogs and Sheep and all my
working Tools with every Thing that is and may be on the Plantation.

after my wife’s demise I give unto my young son George Holmes that tract of land
I now live one containing fifty acres more or less to him and his heirs forever
Item my will and desire is that After my wife Elizabeth Holmes decease that
every thing lent my wife except the Land to be Equally divided between all my
children namely Polley Sukey Edmond George and Patsey Holmes to them and their
Heirs forever
Item Lastly I nominate and appoint my loving wife Elizabeth
Holmes George Crowder jr(?) and Richard Crowder jr(?) Executors of this my last
will and Testament denying all other wills before by me made.

This will was proved by the oath of Samson Power a witness thereto. And at a
Court held for the same County the 14th day of September following the said Will
was further proved by the oath of Philip Reekes another witness thereto and
ordered to be recorded. And at a Court held for the same County the 12th day of
October 1801. On the Motion of Betty Holmes the Executor therein named who made
Oath thereto and together with Richard Crowder Charles Holly and James Thompson
her Securities entered into and Acknowledged their Bond in the Penalty of Ten
Thousand dollars Conditioned as the Law directs Certificate was granted her for
obtaining a probat thereof in due form liberty being reserved for the other
Executors therein named to Join in the Probat when they shall think fit.

In the name
of Almighty God, I, William Holmes, of the County of Mecklenburg being duly
inspired with the thoughts of the uncertainty of life, have made this my last
will and testament in manner following, viz,
I give unto my son
Pennington Holmes two Negroes, Tom who is now in his possession and Jim at my
death to him and his heirs forever.
I give unto my son Samuel Holmes one
Negro by name of Major to him and his heirs forever.
I give unto my
daughter Betsy Jones one Negro now in her possession by the name of Reuben to
her and her heirs forever.
I do hereby exonerate my son-in-law James
Jones from the payment of any sum of money he may be indebted to me.
I
lend unto my daughter Mary Eubanks, during her natural life, one Negro woman
named Peggy now in her possession together with her present and future increase.
At her death, I give them to her children to be equally divided among them.
I lend unto my son Isaac Holmes during his natural life five Negroes named
Hall, Edmond, Tommy, old Isaac and old Ned and after his death I give them to
his lawful issue to be equally divided among them, but for want of such, then
for them to be equally divided among all my children.
I lend unto my
daughter Sarah Ann Holmes during her natural life two Negroes, viz. Ben and Liza
and after her death I give them and their increase to her lawful issue but for
want of such, then for them to be equally divided among my other children.
Item: I give unto my grandchildren (my son Edward Holmes, deceased children)
Luke W. Holmes, William Holmes, John Holmes, Allen Holmes, Ansel Holmes and
Nancy Holmes one hundred and ten pounds to be put out on interest for each to
draw his part when they come of age or marry.
I give unto my son Isaac
Holmes one bed and furniture, one horse and cow and calf, one sow with pigs, to
him and his heirs forever.
I give unto my daughter Sarah Ann Holmes one
horse saddle and bridle one bed and furniture and also all her patched work bed
quilts to her and her heirs forever.
I lend unto my wife Sarah Holmes
during her life one hundred acres of land so as to include my present dwelling
house and house near thereto to be laid off by my executors to this my will.
Also I lend her four Negroes, viz. Old Tom, Beck, Silvey and Charles also two
choice horses two cows and calves two sows and pigs with corn and pork
sufficient to last her one year and also the one third part of all my household
and kitchen furniture and plantation utensils. But the whole of the above I lend
on these express conditions: first, that my wife does not marry. If she should
my desire is that everything except the land and Charles should be sold and the
money equally divided between my daughters Betsy, Polley, and Sarah Ann; and
Secondly, if she should break up housekeeping or rent the land or any part
thereof she forfeits the whole, and my son Isaac to have it immediately. But if
she continues to keep house as above expressed to have no interruption and after
her death every article of my estate lent her as above expressed, the land and
Charles be equally divided between my three daughters, Betsy, Polley, and Sarah
Ann Holmes.
I give to my son Isaac Holmes also all the balance of my
tract of land including the old place with it. But if he should die without
lawful issue, then the above land to be equally divided between my two sons
Pennington and Samuel.
And I also give unto my son Isaac after the death
of his mother, Charles to him and his heirs forever.
Lastly, my desire is
that the balance of my stock, house hold and kitchen furniture and every article
of my estate not given away should be sold to raise the money willed to my
grandchildren, Luke W. Holmes, William Holmes, John Holmes, Allen Holmes, Ansel
Holmes and Nancy B. Holmes and if any left to go to my daughters Betsy, Polley,
and Sarah Ann.
I hereby constitute and appoint my sons Pennington Holmes,
Samuel Holmes and Isaac Holmes and John Simmons executors to this my last will
and testament hereby revoking all previously made by me in my perfect mind set
my hand and affix my seal this 7th of February 1809.
