Will of Cluverius COLEMAN

Mecklenburg County, Virginia Will Book 4, pages 138, 139, 140

In the name of God Amen. I Cluverius Coleman of the Parish of St. James's in the county of Mecklenburg and state of Virginia am at this time in sound and perfect mind and memory thanks be given to almighty God for it But being low in body and considering the frailty and uncertainty of my life do make constitute and ordain this my last Will and Testament _____ _____ ____ ____ form as folloeth:

Impremis I heartily recommend my soul to God who gave it me and my body to the earth from whence it came and as touching my worldly goods which God has graciously lent me I give and bequeath as follows – first it is my will and desire that all my just debts should be paid.

Item I lend unto my beloved wife Massey Coleman during her natural life the tract of land whereon I now live. Five negroes Vitz, Anthony, Bob Primus Hannah and Amey Also six head of choice cattle one yoke of oxen an ox cart. Ten hed of sheep fifteen head of hogs three choice work horses three choice feather beds and furniture my desk and book case one dozen setting chairs two choice tables and such household and kitchen furniture as she may stand in need of with plantation utensils sufficient for her use. It is also my will and desire that she should have the crop of corn and tobacco that is made on the plantation whereon I now live and after her death to be disposed of as will be hereafter mentioned.

Item I give and bequeath unto my son James Coleman or/heirs by name Elizabeth, Benjamin Whitehead, Jane Swepson and Mary Anne Coleman five pounds cash a peice to be paid to them as they come of age by my exors as I shall here after mention but if one or either of them decease without a lawful Issue then their legacy shall be equally divided between the surviving children to them and their heirs forever.

Item I lend unto my daughter Elizabeth Jeffries during her natural life one negro woman named Phebe and her increase and at her death the said negro and her increase is to be equally divided between her then surviving children. I also give and bequeath to Mary, Elizabeth, Massey, Robert and James Jeffries sons and daughters of said Elizabeth Jeffries thirty pounds cash apeice to be paid to them as they come of age by my executors. But if one or either of them decease without lawful Issue then their legacy shall be equally divided between the surviving children to them and their heirs forever.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Rebekah Phillips one negro boy named Moses and one negro Woman named Jenny and her increase forever also one hundred pounds specie to her and her heirs forever.

Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Boswells children by name Elizabeth, Joseph, Nancy, Polly and John Boswell one negro woman named Abbe and her increase to them and their heirs forever also thirty five pounds cash a peice to be paid to them as they come of age but if one or either of them decease without lawful issue then their legacy is to be equally divided between the surviving children.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Grace Hicks one negro boy named Edmund and one negro woman named Rachel and her increase also one hundred pounds specie to be paid at my decease to her and her heirs forever.

Item I give and bequeath to my son John Coleman exclusive of what I have heretofore given him one hundred pounds specie and two cows and calves to him and his heirs forever.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Anne Green the following negroes towit, Milly, Aggy, Jude, Mike and Sam. Also one young mare unbroke, as she the said Anne Green may choes and two cows and calves to her heirs forever also two hundred pounds specie to her and her heirs forever.

Item I give and bequeath to my son William Coleman the tract of land I bought of Neven Stewart with that I bought of John and David Holmes coutaining by estimation three hundred thirteen & 3/4 acres be the same mor or less also the land wheron I now live at my wifes decease and five hundred pounds specie to be raised out of debts due me and the money that I now have in hand to him and his heirs forever.

Item I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Coleman all my lands lying on both sides of the Maherrin River including my mill to him and his heirs forever the residue of my estate not till nor bequeathed in my will after all my just debts and cash legacys are paid. It is my will I desire that all my negroes stocks debts goods and all my property be it whatsoever kind it may shall be equally divided between my son William and Thomas Coleman together the negroes and other property lent my wife during her life is also to be divided between my son William and Thomas Coleman at her death I constitue and appoint to this my last will and testament William Coleman and Thomas Coleman Executors as witness my hand and seal this fourteenth day of September one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine.

This will was proved by the oaths of David Holmes John Allen and Matthew Allen witnesses hereunto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of William Coleman and Thomas Coleman the executors therein named who made oath thereto and together with Phillip Reeks, Richard Hutcheson _______ William Brown, Abraham Green, William Stone Sew., David Holmes, John Holmes and William Nowlett their securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of fifty thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs certificate was granted them for abtaining a probat of said will in due form.

Will Book 18, pages 524 and 525

In the name of God Amen I Jno G Coleman of the County of Mecklenburg and state of Virginia being of sound mind & memory do make & ordain this my last will and testament hereby revoking all others by me made or intended to be made in manner and form following

Art 1st I give to my son Cicero A Coleman my negro man Frank one horse household and kitchen furniture all of which has already been advanced to him which I give to him his heirs &c [etc.] forever and at my death I give to my said son Cicero all my stock of hogs & cattle & plantation tools and wagon which are on the plantation whereon the said Cicero now resides also the land I purchased of Asa Garner containing 444 acres by survey I loan to my said son Cicero A Coleman during his life and at his death my will is that the said 444 acres of land shall be equally divided between the heirs of his body but if the said Cicero would survive his wife Jane M Coleman he is to have full popepion [possession] of said land to do as he pleases with

Art 2nd at my death I give & bequeath to my son David P Coleman my two negroes Phil and Mariah and her increase one sorrel horse George one bed & furniture & bedstead which I give to him and his heirs &c forever

Art 3rd at my death I give & bequeath to my daughter Harriet C Coleman my two negroes Repet and Nancy and her increase and one bed and furniture all of which I give to her and her heirs &c forever

4th at my death I give & bequeath to my daughter Mary F Coleman my two negroes George and Claira and her increase and one bed bedstead & furniture all of which I give to her and her heirs &c forever

5th at my death I give and bequeath to my daughter Julia A Coleman my two negroes Green and Isam and one bed bedstead & furniture all of which I give her and her heirs &c forever

6th at my death I give and bequeath to my daughter Amanda E Coleman my two negroes Eitty and Rose & their increase and one bed bedstead & furniture all of which I give her & her heirs forever

7th at my death I give and bequeath to my son Darius S Coleman my two negroes Saerres and Nancy (daughter of Daphne) and her increase one black colt & one bed bedstead & furniture all of which I give him his heirs &c forever

8th at my death I give and bequeath to my son Henry C Coleman my three negroes Paul Jane and Daphne and their increase one sorrel colt & one bed bedstead & furniture all of which I give him & his heirs &c forever

9th at my death I give and bequeath to my daughter Sapphira D Coleman my two negroes Sam and Sarah and her increase and one bed bedstead & furniture all of which I give her & her heirs &c forever

10th at my death I loan to my beloved wife Mary G Coleman all the land whereon I now reside containing 340 acres adjoining the lands of J A Gregory Wm' S Smith Fn Gregory and C H Pettus and the following slaves viz Adam Daniel Tom Wyatt Milley Rachel & Pleasant also all my stock of horses (not before disposed of) cattle hogs sheep ox cart wagon and wheat thrasher plantation utensils of every description also all my household & kitchen furniture not before disposed of all my lard bacon or pork and all my crop of every description I require and bind my wife Mary G Coleman to pay all my just debts out of the property loaned her = at the death of my beloved wife Mary G Coleman my will is that all the above named property of every description loaned her during her life shall be equally divided between my eight children now living with me (viz) David P Coleman Harriet C Coleman Mary F Coleman Julia A Coleman Amanda E Coleman Darius S Coleman Henry C Coleman Sapphira D Coleman I request that my popepions [possessions] whereon I now live be a peaceable home for my daughters as long as they live single I request that no appraisement be made of my estate

Lastly I hereby appoint my three sons David P Coleman Darius S Coleman and Henry C Coleman executors to this my last will & testament and request that no security be required of them

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this ___ day of ____ 1856

The foregoing last will and testament of Jno G Coleman decd [deceased] was this day produced in open count and proved by the oath of Alexander Smith and R H Brame two subscribing witnepes [witnesses] thereto & ordered to be recorded = and on motion of Darius S Coleman one of the Exors [executors] therein named who made oath thereto

(there being no security required by said will) entered into & acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $24000 conditioned according to Law Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat [probate] thereof in due form Liberty being reserved the other Exors to join in the probat when they shall think fit

Know all men by these presents that I Darius S Coleman am held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of Twenty four thousand dollars to pay which I bind Myself My Heirs &c jointly & severally firmly by these presents sealed with My seals & dated this 16th day of June 1856 = The condition of the above obligation is such that if the above bound Darius S Coleman who is appointed and this day qualified as Exor of Jno G Coleman deceased shall faithfully discharge the duties of said Executor according to law then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.

Will of Marcia COLEMAN

MARCIA COLEMAN made Nov 26, 1810 Proved Feb. 13, 1813 Col 7, P 336, Mecklenburg Co, Va

In the name of God, Amen, I, Marcia Coleman of the County of Mecklenburg and State of Virginia, being now afflicted, Though in my perfect sense and memory for which I thank almighty God, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following:

First, I recommend my Soul to God, and my body to the earth from whence it came to be buryed in a decent manner under the direction of my executors who I shall hereafter appoint.

Second, that all my just debts shall be paid.

Third, that all the rest of my property, to wit: two Negroes Charles and Mary together, with all other property I die possessed of shall be sold on a credit of twelve months, and the profits arising therefrom after paying my just debts and funeral charges to be equally divided between my children, to wit: William, Thomas, Rebecca, Gracy, and Ann Green.

Lastly, I nominate and appoint William Coleman & Thomas Coleman executors of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all and every will or wills heretofore made as Witness my hand and Seal this 26th day of November 1810.

At a Court held for Mecklenburg County this 13th day of February, 1813, This Will was proved by oath of William Keeton, a Witness thereto and ordered to be recorded, and on motion of Thomas Coleman, the executor therein named who made oath thereto and together with William Pettus Senr and Lewis Burwell his securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of five thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of the said Will in due form, Liberty being reserved for the other executor therein named to join probate when they shall think fit.

Will of Mary G. COLEMAN

Will Book 23, page 507

In the name of God Amen. I Mary G Coleman of the County of Mecklenburg & State of Va being of sound mind & memory do constitute & ordain this my last will and testament in the words following to wit.

Item first, It is my wish that all my just debts be paid

2nd At my death I give and bequeath to my two daughters Harriet C and Julia A Coleman my two mules my wagon & harnep [harness] all my crops of every description plantation tools and my table & kitchen furniture to them & their heirs forever.

3rd At my death I direct that one bed & my stock of cattle be sold and one half of the proceeds of said sale to go to my son Henry C Coleman & the other half to be divided between my son D P Coleman & my two daughters Sophia D Townsend & Mary F McCargo.

4th I give to the heirs of my two deceased sons D S & C A Coleman two dollars pay one dollar to the children of D S Coleman and one dollar to the children of C A Coleman.

5th I hereby appoint my friend Wm H Pettus executor to this my last will & testament.

In testimony whereof I hereunto assign my name and affix my seal this 20 th day of Oct 1876.

Jno G Coleman was the son of Obediah and Elizabeth Coleman of Mecklenburg Co VA

Jno G Coleman and Mary G Clay were married March 14th, 1818 in Amelia Co VA

Cicero A Coleman was a private in Company A (Mecklenburg Guards), 56th Virginia Infantry CSA and died at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond on August 4, 1864 of debility. Cicero's wife was Jane Haskins.

Disposition of land in the will of Jno G. Coleman:

"...the land I purchased of Asa Garner containing 444 acres by survey I loan to my said son Cicero A Coleman during his life and at his death my will is that the said 444 acres of land shall be equally divided between the heirs of his body but if the said Cicero would survive his wife Jane M Coleman he is to have full popepion [possession] of said land to do as he pleases with...
