SHEARIN, SPENCE, STEPHENSON -
I am searching for the origins of my great-grandfather Allen Spence (March 29, 1853- April
22, 1925) According to his death certificate (Halifax County, NC) he was born in Virginia. Family
stories tell how he use to "wash his hands" in clouds of the Blue Ridge as a boy. My grandmother
told me he followed the Roanoke River to Weldon, NC when he was about 18 years old. There he met
and married Mary Elizabeth Shearin in 1881. When I followed the river up stream, I ran
into Carroll and Floyd Counties. The death certificate lists Allen's parents as Allen
Spence and Sarah Stephenson, both from Virginia. In Death Records of Carroll County
1854-1896 (Ronald W. Hall) I found a listing by the parents -Isham and M.F. Spence of
Carroll County for their 12 year old daughter-Lucy A. Spence, who died in Sept. 1885.
Witnesses included Allen Spence and Sarah Stephenson. Can you help me with the
connection with Allen and Isham? Also, I can find reference to Aaron Spence but not an
Allen Spence from the correct time period. My great-grandfather named his 1st born son
Allen Aaron, but I can find no written record of his own middle name being Aaron. Thank you for
your time and consideration.
