Found on page 81 in the 1830 United States Federal
Census of Jackson County Florida. Reports John Allen. 1
white male between the ages of 20-29. No other
information given on record. Birthdate then will be
1810-1801. Age will be a clue to the future research.
Not married will be a clue No children in home will be a
clue
1840 Census. No Allen or Alen found in Jackson County.
However, east of Jackson County in Madison County, a
John Allen reports as follows: Male between the ages of
30-39 which matches the age clue reported in Jackson
County ten years earlier. So I examine. Other males
reported are 2 under the age of 5 1 between the ages of
5 to 9 Females reported are 1 between the ages of 5 to 9
1 female between the ages of 30-39
This family matches to my clues: All children born since
the last census. Probably indicates John Allen has
married since last census and sired four children. Since
two are five or older. Probably married between 1830
(after census) and 1832. I tried to check marriage
records in both Jackson and Madison Counties but could
find no marriage records. Nor any other Florida marriage
records that might match. I checked nearby Georgia
countries and found no leads.
I moved forward. 1850
Census No John Allen in Florida but I found a John B.
Allen in Chocochatta Settlement, Benton, Florida. Benton
is 57 miles east from Madison. Several items do not
match but here is this family.
John B. Allen.
Age 53 - too old based on
clues. Born in North Carolina.
Sarah Allen.
Age 42 - matches
to clue.
Born in Georgia.
David A. Allen.
Age 18 - matches to age. Born
in
Florida birth matches where marriage probably took
place.
William B.
Allen.
Age 16 - age match off by one year.
Jane A Allen.
Age 12 - matches
to age
Children born since last census
George P. Allen.
Age 8
Columbus A. Allen. Age 3.
One son is missing from 1840 guide. Maybe died. This
family disappears in 1860. Can find no one. Not
Sarah or children. In 1870 Census David A. Allen
reports in Hernando County. There is another David
Allen in Santa Rosa who is easily traced. Not the
same one. His father is Robert Allen and mother is
Harriett. Interesting that both men, John B. And
Robert name oldest sons David. Might be a lead
backwards.
In U. S. confederate
war records there is a John Allen. Age 57 who
enlisted 1862 and served in the Thirteenth
Cavalry. Burnett’s Regiment. Thirteenth Mounted
Volunteers. State of Texas.
I checked for John Allen’s in Texas in 1860
Census and found none to fit him nor the family.
With David A. Allen remaining in Florida 1870, I
believe either the family was on the move or all
died but David.
David in 1870 is
married to Ann, age 31 with children
Elizabeth age 14, Robert age 11, William age
7, Anna age 4 and Sarah age 4, and Dolly age
1. Lives in Hernando County Florida.
Note he has used
name Robert. Could
Robert be an uncle who helped him when
family died???
