Frances Alberta Profitt
Martin, 91, of Floyd, went home to be with her Savior on Wednesday, January
8, 2014. She was glad to be relieved of this earthly body, and looked
forward to being in Christ's presence with all of her loved ones who have
gone ahead of her. Frances was a very crafty person. She made many
beautiful things such as: dolls, foot stools, trash cans, spreads for
furniture, quilts, and anything she could think of. She loved to sew and
make clothes for herself and children. She also did a lot of sewing for
other people when they asked. She was a member of Stonewall Primitive
Baptist Church for many years. She enjoyed her fellowship with the members
and the teachings of Christ. She is now going home to join her loved ones:
her husband of 69 years, Elvin Martin; mother and dad, Getter and Alberta
Profitt; and nine brothers and sisters who have gone ahead of her. She is
survived by four children, Paul J. Martin and wife, Barbara of Floyd;

Conner and husband, Edwin C. Conner of Copper Hill; and Frank E. Martin of
Floyd; eight grandchildren, Cecil and Leisa Martin of Floyd; Tammy Martin-

Obituary from Maberry Funeral Home (Floyd, VA) website
(scr: FAG)
On September 7, 2023, Rosie McGrady, 94, a longtime resident of
Floyd, joined her husband for their 77th wedding anniversary with angel
wings. She was a resident of Heritage Hall, Blacksburg, VA. She is preceded
in death by her loving husband, Lawrence McGrady; mother & father,
Viola and Trever Marshall; and her sisters, Lorene, Winnie, and Lassie.
Rosie loved baking her famous homemade biscuits, canning vegetables from
Lawrence's garden, tending her beautiful flowers, crocheting unique doilies
and afghans, and would always welcome company to eat her unforgettable
chicken and dumplings anytime they visited. In her younger days she loved
to go see Conway Twitty in concert. In recent years, she enjoyed
participating in group activities such as playing bingo, attending tea
parties, receiving manicures, and visiting with family during her stay in
assisted living.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 10, 2023 in
the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating.
Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive
friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at English
Meadows and Heritage Hall.

God saw he was getting tired
And a cure was not to be
So he put his arms around him
And whispered, come with me
With tearful eyes we watched
him suffer
And saw him fade away
Although we loved him dearly,
We could not make him stay.
A golden heart stopped beating
Hard working hands to rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.

Eula Ellen Midkiff, 67,
of Floyd, Va., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July
9, 2008, following a courageous year long battle with brain cancer. She
died peacefully at home surrounded by her family.
Eula Ellen was born in Floyd on September 28, 1940, and was the daughter of
the late James Edgar and Glennis Duncan DeHart. Besides her parents, she
was preceded in death by her husband, James Lee Midkiff. Known as a mama,
grandma, memaw, and sissy, she was a loving and devoted mother and
grandmother, as well as a trusted friend and companion to many. Her list of
close friends is far too long to acknowledge.
She touched many lives during her lifetime, especially as a caregiver to
over 130 children during her 34 years of home daycare. She provided a
loving, safe environment for each child, treating them individually with
nurturing love and guidance. In addition, she was a longtime, faithful
member of Floyd Baptist Church where she took particular joy in the loving
fellowship within her Sunday School class.
Left to cherish many wonderful memories are three sons and
daughters-in-law, Randal and Diane Midkiff, Ronnie and Joyce Midkiff, and
Larry and Jennifer Midkiff, all of Floyd; one daughter and son-in-law,
Stacy and Bryant Thompson, of Floyd; four handsome grandsons in which she
took much pride, Jeremy Midkiff, of London, England, Bradley Midkiff, Bryce
Thompson and Brent Thompson, all of Floyd; one sister and brother-in-law,
Connie and Reif Bond, of Indian Valley; two sisters-in-law, Barbara
Testerman and husband, Mike, of Hillsville, and Maggie Shelton and husband,
Herbert, of Salem; two nephews, Chris Bond and wife, Kim, and Kenny
Shelton; three nieces, Lisa Bolt and husband, William, Sheena Quesenberry
and husband, Brandon, and Darlene Wolfe and husband, Rick; six great-nieces
and great-nephews, Alena and Ryne Bond, Laila Bolt, Carli and Tanner
Quesenberry, and Jake Shelton; one uncle, Charles Duncan and wife, Shirley;
a special cousin, Bonnie Wray; and a devoted caregiver, Delta Sowers.
The family is thankful for her sister, Connie, who took care of mama.
Special thanks to Carilion Hospice of New River Valley as well as everyone
for the many acts of kindness and the tremendous outpouring of support
during her illness.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2008, at
Gardner Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Davis Holladay officiating. Interment
will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2008, at Gardner Funeral
Home where the family will be from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to Carilion Hospice of New River Valley, the American
Cancer Society, or Floyd Baptist Church. Arrangements are being handled by
Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd.

Success: She has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and
loved much; who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of
intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled her niche
and accomplished her task; who has left the world better than she found it,
whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who has
never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it; who
has always looked for the best in others and given them the best she had;
whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction.

Obituary from THE HENRY BULLETIN, Martinsville, Va.,
Fri., Aug. 27, 1920, p. 1, col. 3 [edited], (Roanoke World). Captain W. H.
Morgan, the oldest member of the Floyd County bar, died at his home in
Floyd Friday morning after a protracted illness. Captain Morgan was an
ardent member of the Methodist church. In his early manhood he entered the
Confederate Army as orderly sergeant of "The Clifton Grays," of Campbell
County. The company was mustered into service as company C and became a
part of the 11th Virginia Regiment, Kemper's Brigade, Pickett's Division.
Private Morgan soon became captain of his company and served in all the
battles in which that noted regiment was engaged until his capture in May
1864. Captain Morgan, while true to the Union after the Civil War, never
forgot the cause for which he fought. Some years ago he wrote
"Personal Reminiscences of the War of 1861-5," a publication
which was widely circulated (excerpt of book follows). Mrs. J. W. Simmons
of Martinsville, is a daughter of Captain Morgan and was with him in the
latter days of his illness and was at his bedside when he died. Other
Martinsville relatives of the deceased attended the funeral.
