John Warren Foster ( - October 8, 2013)
John Warren Foster, of Christiansburg, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, VA.
He was born in Check in Floyd County. John was a member of Crockett Springs United Methodist Church in Shawsville, VA, and attended Fairlawn Grace Brethren Church. He served his country proudly in the United States Navy. He was employed by the Vought-Sikorsky Aircraft in Trenton, N.J. John retired from Bucks County School System in Levittown, PA. He also retired from Richfield Nursing and Rehab.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Cleveland and Maude Jewell Foster; his first wife, Virginia Ritchie Foster; brothers, Marvin, Edward, Clinton, and Blain; and sisters, Ila Lois, Clyde, Irene, Wanda, and Georgia.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Sue Sisson Foster, of Christiansburg; daughter, Shelley Foster Wright (Jerry); five granddaughters, Christy Wright Fletcher (Daniel), Amy Wright Bickford (Jeffrey), Rebecca Wright Bailey (Joshua), Kara Wright Bailey (Cory), and Allison Wright; 11 great-grandchildren, all of Hermon, Maine; two stepsons, Daryl Sisson and Scott Sisson, of Shawsville; and step-granddaughter, Rebekah Sisson. He is also survived by a sister, Hilda Foster Argabright, of Roanoke; many nieces and nephews, whom he considered all special; as well as many good friends and neighbors.
John loved playing golf with his three buddies, Jamie, Calvin, and Ted.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2013, at Horne Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lester Kennedy of Fairlawn Grace Brethren Church, the Rev. David Mucha of Crockett Springs United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Jerry Wright of Hermon, Maine officiating.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the funeral service.
A military service and interment will be held at the Southwest Virginia Veterans' Cemetery, Dublin, following the Chapel service.

Virginia Richie Foster, 72, of Salem, died Sunday July 13, 1997 in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
She was born Moorestown, N. J. and had been an area resident for the past 18 years. She was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church and was active in church throughout her life and currently served as the church organist at Crockett Springs United Methodist Church in Shawsville.
Survivors include her husband, John Warren Foster; daughter and son-in-law, Shelly Foster Wright and Jerry Wright of Norwood, Pa.; granddaughters, Christy, Amy, Rebecca, Kara, and Alison Wright; her brother, William Richie from Corona, Ca.; sisters Betty Mrakota of Salem, and Ruth Crawford from Milo, Maine.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 16, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. at the Crockett Springs United Methodist Church in Shawsville with the Pastor John Furman and Rev. Mary Ann Byrd. Burial will follow in the Hemlock Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the John M. Oakey and Sons Funeral Home in Salem. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Mission to the World, P. O. Box 29765, Atlanta, Ga.

Elizabeth Richie "Betty" Markota Whitcomb, 91, of Salem, passed away at Lewis Gale Hospital on Saturday, July 26, 2008. She was preceded in death by her father, William Hooten Richie; her mother, Alice Taylor Richie; her sisters, Ruth Crawford and Virginia Foster; one brother, William H. Richie Jr.; her first husband, Emil Richie Makota; and her second husband, John Whitcomb. She is survived by her son, Emil Richie Markota Jr., of Ashgrove, Australia. Betty will be remembered for her love of her savior and her love of people. She was a mentor and made a difference in the lives she touched. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Dan Carawan officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Salem Chapel.
