Roanoke Times, The (VA) -
Wednesday, March 7, 2001
Susie Belle Albert Vest,
92, of Floyd passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2018. Originally from
McCoy, Virginia, Susie Belle attended Radford College in the teacher
preparation program and came to Floyd in 1948, when she married Floyd
native, David Vest. She began her career as a teacher at Floyd Elementary
School and later joined the faculties of Check Elementary School, Check
High School, and Floyd County High School. She was the last teacher to work
in these schools. For several years, Susie Belle worked in the medical
office of Dr. Lawrence Marshall, and then worked in the school
administration office until her retirement. She and her husband David
founded Floyd Automotive Supply, which they operated from 1961 until 1988.
Susie Belle was known in the community for her contributions to the
American Red Cross. Not only did she support letter-writing to troops
stations overseas, she supported fund raisers to
help the ARC provide for victims of national disasters. One of the favorite
projects that she shared with her husband was working the ARC blood bank in
Floyd. In 2013, she was honored by being Grand Marshal of the Floyd County
Annual Christmas Holiday Parade. Susie Belle was a natural historian. She
appreciated the significance of learning from history, including sharing
stories that honored those who came before us. One of her proudest
achievements was contributing to a published history of McCoy, Virginia.
Until her death, she frequently reread the book and shared pictures that
reflected on those who migrated from the North and settled in McCoy, and
the families that grew out of these early citizens in that New River
community. She enjoyed music throughout her life. She and her siblings grew
up with a talented mother, and she insisted that her children and
granddaughter prioritize music as part of their early education. Up until
the last days of her life, she played the piano daily. Susie Belle believed
education was the solution to many of the problems in the world and
encouraged everyone to pursue an education that could lead them to a good
life. A member of the Presbyterian Church of Floyd for 70 years, Susie
Belle served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, and active member of the
Women of the Church, in which she held several leadership roles over her
lifetime. She continued to join the women's group for lunch occasionally
after she moved to Skyline Nursing and Rehab Center in 2014. She was one of
the congregation that was instrumental in building the Presbyterian Church
in Floyd at its current location. Throughout her life, Susie Belle Vest
lived a philosophy of giving to others and making the best of any situation
you find yourself in. Every day she would find something to be thankful for
and something to smile about. She is remembered for her humor, quick wit,
and ability to make others laugh. Her generosity to others was a
fundamental part of her being. Susie Belle was preceded in death by her
husband, Allen David Vest Jr.; son-in-law, Dr. Fred Thayer; parents, Van
Hope and Harmon Albert; and four siblings and their spouses, Curtis and
Nola Albert, Wayne and Frances Albert and their son, Stephen Albert,
Francis, Martha, and Zana Albert, John Pauley, and Nedra Croy; brother-in-law and wife, B.W. and Virginia Vest
and their son, Joey Vest. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Yvonne Vest
Thayer of Christiansburg; son, Allen David Vest III and daughter-in-law,
Ellen Vest of Floyd; granddaughter, Dr. Marcee
Vest Berry and her husband, Garrett Berry of Richmond; great-granddaughter,
Ollie Belle Berry of Richmond; step granddaughter and husband, Julie and
Scott Leshko and their children, Thayer, Stephen,
and Lauren, of Downingtown, Pa.; sister, Mary Nell Pauley of McCoy and
brother-in-law, Don Croy, of Blacksburg; seven
nieces and nephews and their spouses, their children and grandchildren.
Others remembered who were a part of her daily life in later years include
Pansy Wimmer of Floyd, her caretaker for five years, and lifelong friend,
Mary Clark, who she taught at Check High School and worked alongside for
many years. The family would like to thank the staff at Skyline Nursing and
Rehab Center for their care of Susie Belle over the four last years. The
family is appreciative of the many friends in the community and church that
visited her regularly, including her pastor, the Rev. Bob McLavey. They also acknowledge the important services
of the Good Samaritan Hospice staff that supported Susie Belle and her
family. Susie Belle Vest was burial at the family grounds in Harvestwood
Cemetery. For those who want to honor her memory, donations may be made for
education and music programs at the Presbyterian Church of Floyd, P.O. Box
164, Floyd, VA 24091.
