Altizer Jr., Claudine Waldron, both of Roanoke, Crystal Creasey of Goodview, Dorothy Cox of Dublin, Audrey Hale of Collinsville, Trenda Hylton of Martinsville; a brother-in-law, Dorsey Akers of Goodview.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sherwood Memorial Park with Pastor Ben Peyton officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 320 Hershberger Road, NW, Roanoke. Arrangements by John M. Oakey and Son, Salem.

ALTIZER, Ruby S., 92, of Christiansburg, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2000, in Richfield Nursing Center, Salem. She was a longtime member of the Christiansburg Church of Christ. Preceded in death by her husband, Fred C. Altizer, Sr., she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth A. and Mary Jane Altizer of Christiansburg, Fred C., Jr. and Sandra Altizer of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Keith Altizer of Christiansburg, Jason Altizer of Richmond, Jessica Altizer of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 28, 2000, at the Horne Funeral Chapel conducted by MR. A. Lowell Altizer and Mr. C.E. Mannon with burial to follow in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Christiansburg Church of Christ. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Horne Funeral Services, Christiansburg.

Paul Reece Sutphin, 84, of Christiansburg, formerly of Floyd, departed this life Sunday, March 5, 1995, at Heritage Hall, Blacksburg. He was born in Floyd County on October 5, 1910, a son of Osborne and Belle Sutphin.

Mr. Sutphin spent most of his life in Law Enforcement, working for the Department of Corrections and serving Floyd Co. as Sheriff, from 1960 until 1972.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Pugh Sutphin, and by their son, Paul Rudolph Sutphin.

He leaves behind a son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Tula Sutphin, Ijamsville, Md.; one daughter and son-in-law, Betty S. Thomas and Dr. Richard M. Yearwood, Christiansburg; one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Paul Randall and Kathy Sutphin, Jerusalem; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ruby S. and Fred Altizer, Christiansburg, Evia S . Akers, Roanoke.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 9, 1995, at 11 a.m. in the Gardner Funeral Home, with Mr. Larry Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Gardner Funeral Home, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mrs. Priscilla Sutphin Hubbard, 82, widow of Columbus Green Hubbard, died at the home of her granddaughter in Max Meadows, Saturday morning.

She was born in Patrick County, October 9, 1879, the daughter of the late George Washington Sutphin and Martha Fain Sutphin.

She is survived by four sons, two daughters, 22 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. from the Glenwood Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. James Crabtree and the Rev. Ray Redd. Burial will follow in the Hubbard Cemetery. The body will remain at Strickler’s Funeral Home until one hour before the service.

Police Officer John Sutfin succumbed to gunshot wounds received the previous day when he was shot in the rail yards at Kenova, West Virginia, while attempting to arrest an armed robbery suspect. The man had robbed another railroad police officer of his service revolver earlier in the evening.

Other officers were able to return fire and kill the suspect. Officer Sutfin was taken to Rife-Ferguson Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

Officer Sutfin had served with the Norfolk & Western Railroad Police Department for over 20 years. He was survived by his wife, daughter, three sons, and brother. [odmp.org]
