of the city following an extended illness from complications. He was a native

are being held from the First Pentecostal Holiness church at 3:30 o'clock

Sutphin Metzendorf, 85, of Santee, widow of Robert Henry “Bob” Metzendorf,
died Friday, May 22, 2015 at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. Cookie was born in
Virginia, a daughter of the late Zebrum Andrew Sutphin and Adalaid Raymond Manuel Sutphin. For many years,
she and her husband were Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisees with restaurants
in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. They got their start in
Santee as owners of the former Gamecock and Delta motels. Cookie was a past
secretary-treasurer for KFC Association: Southeast, a member of the Red
Hatters, a charter member of the Swamp Fox Boat Club, and a member of First
Baptist Church, Elloree. She enjoyed spending time in Maggie Valley, as well
as entertaining, traveling, cooking, and shopping. In addition to her
husband, Cookie was preceded in death by a son, Mark D. Metzendorf. Surviving are daughters,
Linda (Doug) Felder of Utah, and Kathy Metzendorf (Gene) of Holly Hill; a
son, Roy (Tandy) Metzendorf of Walterboro; daughter-in-law, Sabrina (Larry)
O'Brien of Santee; grandchildren, Jennifer Felder of California, Jonathan
Metzendorf (Jill) of Walterboro, Brian (Racheal) Samec of Tampa, Fla., Julie
(Jay) Sprankles of Charleston, Kerri Metzendorf (Joe) of Elloree, Christopher
(Robin) Felder, Carlotta Felder, Jacob Ross Felder, and Benjamin Felder all
of Utah, Mark (Ginger) Metzendorf and Crista Metzendorf (Lloyd) all of
Columbia; step-grandchildren, Ellis Ann and Grier Frank of Walterboro; 20
great-grandchildren; and a number of beloved nieces and nephews. The family would like to

Sutphin, 45, who died Sunday from burns received Friday in an explosion at the New River Ordnance Works, were held yesterday at the First Pentecostal Church of God with the Rev. J.B. Daugherty and the Rev. W.E. Rogers in charge. Interment was in Thornspring Cemetery. Mr. Sutphin and another plant fireman were badly burned about the head, arms and shoulders when struck powder exploded prematurely on the plant grounds. Both were brought to the Pulaski hospital after emergency treatment where the injuries proved fatal. The other victim, Raymond Dawson, 833 Front Street, is reported improving. Mr. Sutphin was born Feb. 16, 1922 in Bland County, Va., to the late Charles and Olla Sutphin. He worked as a mechanic for Bert Spriggs Lincoln Mercury from 1957-1980 and then at S+S Auto Performance, Inc. with his son from 1981-2005. He served in Army during World War II from 1944-1945 in Europe. He received many medals during his service with the Army, including two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, a Good Conduct Medal, a Meritorious Unit Emblem, a European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, a Combat Infantry Badge, an Honorable Service Lapel Button World War II, a Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar. He received an Honorable Discharge. He was a member of the NRA and was the Crew Chief of the S+S Auto Performance, Inc. dragster that competed at National Events all over the East Coast from 1981 – 2000. He was ASE certified in all aspects of automotive repair. He enjoyed IHRA Drag Racing with his son, hunting, mechanics, farming and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Marie Sutphin whom he married in 1948; his former wife Magie Mozelle, whom he married in 1941; one daughter, Patricia Ellen Krisby; two brothers, Marion Sutphin and Early Sutphin; and one sister, Gloria Wiggins. He is survived by one son, Butch Sutphin of Davidsonville; one daughter, Norma Meeler of Winder, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Daniel Patrick Wiggins of Glen Burnie and Michael Kevin Wiggins of Annapolis; one daughter, Jeanne Marie Wiggins of Queenstown; one brother, Trubie Sutphin of Davidsonville; and eight grandchildren.
